Reduce the risk by choosing for your playing needs, comparing comfort-related specifications, checking details about the exact instrument, and reading the seller’s return terms before checkout. Then inspect it promptly when it arrives and decide within the return window whether it is a keeper.
1. Choose the kind of guitar that fits how you want to play
Start with the music and setting that will make you want to practice. An acoustic is self-contained for unplugged playing; an electric is designed to be amplified and often has lighter strings and a slimmer neck. Neither is a universal best choice. Sweetwater’s electric-guitar buying guide explains common differences and options.

If you have played a guitar you liked, use it as a reference. Note whether it was acoustic or electric, its approximate weight and body size, and—if you can find them—its scale length, neck profile, and pickup layout. These details help narrow the search, but they cannot promise an identical feel: hand size, playing style, posture, and personal preference all matter.
2. Compare the details that affect feel and sound
Comfort and fit
Compare scale length, neck profile, body shape, and weight. Scale length is the vibrating length of the strings and can influence string tension and reach; neck profile describes the shape of the back of the neck. Sweetwater gives 24.75 to 25.5 inches as a general range for electric-guitar scale lengths, not a rule for every model. Treat measurements as filters, not a remote substitute for trying the instrument.

Sound and configuration
For an electric guitar, compare pickup configuration as well as appearance. Different layouts offer different tonal options; an HSS or HSH layout can provide a broader range for someone whose preferences are still developing. Consider the styles you play and the sounds you need rather than assuming that a popular configuration is right for you.
Construction and practical fit
Read the listing for the instrument’s materials, configuration, and any modifications. If you plan to buy a case or gig bag, verify that it fits the guitar’s exact body shape and model. A generic size label alone may not establish a secure fit. Sweetwater describes checking case fit as part of its online-buying guidance: How to Buy a Guitar Online.

3. Find out what you are actually buying
Listings vary. Check whether the photos show the specific instrument or a stock image, whether an individual weight is listed, and whether the seller discloses condition, repairs, or modifications. Sweetwater says its Guitar Gallery listings use serial-number-specific instruments, high-resolution photos, and recorded individual weight. Those are Sweetwater features, not a standard you should assume every retailer meets.
When the listing leaves important questions open, contact the seller before ordering. Ask for the exact instrument’s weight, close-up photos of any wear or damage, confirmation of the listed configuration and condition, and—if helpful—a brief demonstration. For used or vintage instruments, ask directly about repairs, replaced parts, and known issues. A clear answer helps you judge the listing; it still cannot tell you exactly how the guitar will feel in person.

4. Ask what inspection and setup mean
“Inspected” and “set up” are not interchangeable. Sweetwater says its 55-point inspection applies to instruments valued at $399 and above and checks factory tolerances. That is a retailer process specification; it does not mean the guitar has been adjusted to your preferred string height, string gauge, or playing style. See Sweetwater’s description of its 55 Point Inspection.
Ask the seller what its inspection covers, including whether it checks electronics and playability, and whether a setup is included or available. A setup by a qualified technician can adjust some playability factors to suit you. It cannot change a guitar’s fundamental body shape or neck geometry, so it is not a remedy for every fit problem.

5. Read the exact return terms before checkout
Do not rely on a return period remembered from a previous purchase or on a policy advertised for another seller. Check the terms that apply to this item and seller before paying. Look for:
- The deadline and how it is calculated, including when the return request must be made.
- Whether the instrument must remain in original condition, and what counts as damage or use.
- Exclusions or different rules for vintage, clearance, special-order, or other specific items.
- Return shipping costs, restocking fees, and the process for obtaining authorization.
As one retailer-specific example, Guitar Center’s policy page, last revised February 11, 2026, states a 45-day satisfaction guarantee with limitations and exceptions, and a three-day return period for vintage instruments. These terms are not an industry-wide guarantee; check the current policy and the individual item’s eligibility at the time you buy. Guitar Center return policy.
Quick Recap
6. Make a delivery-day assessment plan
- Keep the packaging. Save the box and packing materials while you assess the guitar; you may need them if a return is permitted.
- Check the shipment promptly. Compare the instrument with the listing and look for shipping damage or undisclosed condition issues. Contact the seller quickly if something is wrong.
- Evaluate it within the policy window. Check whether it feels comfortable to hold and play, whether its sound and configuration suit your needs, and whether its condition matches the listing. Do not let a return deadline pass while waiting for certainty.
- Choose between a setup and a return. If the instrument otherwise suits you but needs a different feel, ask a qualified technician about an appropriate setup. If the body or neck is fundamentally uncomfortable, a setup may not solve the mismatch; use the seller’s return process if the item is eligible.
7. Use a short pre-purchase checklist
- Does the guitar suit the music and playing context you actually want?
- Have you compared scale length, neck profile, body shape, weight, and—on an electric—pickup layout?
- Do you know whether the photos and weight refer to the exact instrument?
- Have you clarified condition, modifications, inspection, and setup support?
- Have you read the return terms for this specific seller and item, including deadlines, exclusions, and costs?
