An upgrade starts immediately; a downgrade starts on your next billing date. If a provider bills you as part of a package, its rules may determine which plans you can choose and how to change them.
Change your plan on a directly billed account
- Open Netflix’s Change Plan page in a browser and sign in if prompted.
- Select the plan you want, then choose Continue or Update.
- Review the change and select Confirm Change or Confirm.
Netflix says an upgrade takes effect immediately. Your billing date may shift to account for the remaining balance from your previous payment, or Netflix may charge a prorated amount for the remaining balance. A downgrade takes effect on your next billing date; until then, you can keep using the features of your current, higher plan.

Netflix says memberships are billed monthly on the signup date; annual, multi-month, and lifetime memberships are not offered. Extra-member eligibility and pricing can vary by location or package. The Basic plan has been discontinued, according to Netflix’s plan page.

If you can’t change the plan
Netflix identifies several reasons the standard change flow may not work:
- The account is on hold or paused. Resolve the account status issue before trying again.
- A Kids profile is active. Switch from the Kids profile, then open the Change Plan page again.
- A provider bills the account. The standard Netflix flow may not offer plan changes for partner-billed or package accounts.
Changing a plan included with a provider package
For a package account, consult the provider’s rules or the relevant Netflix Help Center page. A package may prevent downgrading below its included plan or switching to a plan the provider does not offer. The provider may need to make or approve the change if it is declined.

Package changes can take effect immediately, with a price difference or new price appearing on the next provider bill. Timing and charges depend on the package terms; Netflix’s Comcast Xfinity package guidance and Cox billing guidance cover examples, but your provider’s terms govern your account.
