There is no native Linux firmware flasher for Xbox controllers. The documented updaters are an Xbox console and the Xbox Accessories app on Windows. If you have neither, a Windows VM on Linux can work, but the update makes the controller reset its USB connection, and in at least one documented setup the running VM never got the controller back. Test that the controller can disconnect and reappear in Accessories on the same physical port before you start the flash.

Xbox Wire’s June 12, 2024 announcement describes the Xbox Accessories app, on console or Windows PC, as the manual update route. The sources give no cost or success-rate ranking, so choose by what hardware you can reach. Check the on-screen labels and whether an update is actually offered, because a specific firmware version is not guaranteed.
Why the USB reset matters
Devices that load firmware over USB commonly reset and enumerate again afterward. Microsoft Learn’s “Configuring a USB Device for Firmware Update” (last updated December 15, 2021) describes such devices being enumerated twice, possibly with a different vendor/device ID once the firmware is loaded. A physical PC handles this without you noticing. A VM only sees the controller if something re-attaches it.
Danil Galeev’s report on DEV Community describes exactly that failure. During flashing the controller reset, and Linux and a fresh libusb context could see the device again. The running QEMU process, inside a Docker container, could not reacquire it. He traced this to missing hotplug events in his container arrangement. That diagnosis belongs to his setup. It is not a general rule about Docker, QEMU or every Xbox controller.

A separate anecdotal report, xpadneo issue #472 (opened May 6, 2024), describes USB redirection trouble in VirtualBox. It is a single user’s account, not a confirmed pattern.
The reported setup and result
- Host: openSUSE Tumbleweed, SELinux enforcing, KVM, rootful Docker.
- Guest: Windows 10 22H2 running Microsoft’s own updater.
- Hardware: two Microsoft controllers, USB ID 045e:0b12.
- Outcome: both went from firmware 5.9.2709.0 to 5.23.6.0.
This is a two-controller report, not a success rate. The author says his procedure neither implements a native flasher nor distributes firmware files. He also says the refactored scripts had not been retested end to end on hardware, and the Windows 11 guest path was not validated. Other controller models may receive a different firmware version.

Prerequisites for the script-based Docker method
- Linux x86-64 host with KVM
- Rootful Docker Engine and Compose v2
- Python 3.10 or later, systemd and udev
- A USB data cable (check whether your controller uses USB-C or Micro-USB; charge-only cables will not work)
- Room for a 4 GB Windows guest, and preferably at least 80 GB free storage
Preparation temporarily unloads the shared xpad driver, so unplug any other wired Xbox controllers. The scripts run as root, so read them first. These requirements apply to that method only, not to updating a controller in general.

- Connect the controller and confirm Xbox Accessories in the guest sees it.
- Unplug it and plug it back into the same physical port.
- Confirm Accessories detects it again without restarting Docker.
- Confirm the relay reports an add event.
If any check fails, stop and fix device discovery first. Starting the flash with a broken re-attach path leaves the controller mid-update with nothing to finish the job.
During the update
Galeev’s instruction for the session is: “Do not disconnect USB, stop the relay, suspend Linux or restart Windows/Docker while updating.” That is the author’s guidance, not a Microsoft statement. Update one controller at a time and wait for the explicit success screen.

Verifying the result
Reopen the controller’s details in Accessories and check the full firmware version and the update status. In the report, one controller needed a Windows restart before Accessories showed the new version. The other showed it immediately, so a stale version display is not necessarily a failed flash.
Bluetooth problems after updating
A firmware update does not guarantee Bluetooth fixes. The xpadneo troubleshooting guidance starts with removing the saved Bluetooth device and pairing again. It also covers BLE/BlueZ settings, kernel versions and adapter-specific workarounds.

In Galeev’s case, a clean reboot and fresh pairing did not fix one controller’s reconnect problem. On a MediaTek adapter with BlueZ 5.87, setting CentralAddressResolution=0 restored reconnection for that controller. The setting is adapter-wide, not an Xbox-specific fix. He verified the behavior independently for only one controller, so try it only after re-pairing fails, and note that it affects every Bluetooth device on that adapter.
