MCP Gateway Security: Why AI Agents Need a Gateway (and What It Can’t Fix)

Agents choose their own tools, so access has to be governed outside the model. Here is what an MCP gateway enforces, the threats behind it, how real implementations differ, and what it cannot fix.

AI agents need an MCP gateway because the model, not a developer, decides which tools to call and with what arguments. A gateway gives you one place outside the model to enforce identity, least-privilege access, tool-call policy, traffic inspection and audit between agents and MCP servers. That makes it useful defense in depth, especially for high-consequence tools and servers reached over a network.

It is not a cure. A gateway cannot make over-broad permissions safe, and it cannot guarantee that a model reads untrusted content safely. Its real coverage also depends on the product and the transport it handles. Microsoft’s preview MCP firewall, for example, inspects remote traffic but not local stdio servers.

What changes when an agent chooses the tools

The OWASP Cheat Sheet Series entry on MCP security describes the Model Context Protocol as the interface through which AI applications reach external tools, data sources and services. In a conventional integration, a developer decides which call happens and when. With MCP, the model picks tools and fills in parameters from natural-language context. Whatever text reaches the model can therefore influence which action runs.

Some of those actions have consequential or non-reversible effects: sending mail, modifying records, deleting files. Governing them at runtime, rather than trusting a prompt that says “be careful”, is the core argument for a gateway.

The threats a gateway is meant to address

OWASP’s list of MCP risks is a good map of what goes wrong. The ones that matter most for gateway design:

Tool poisoning and rug pulls

Tool names, descriptions, parameter schemas and return values are all text the model reads. A malicious one can carry hidden instructions. A “rug pull” is the variant where a server changes its definitions after you approved it. Treat the full schema as an injection surface, not just the description field.

Cross-server tool shadowing

When an agent connects to several servers, a hostile server can describe its tools so they override or intercept how the model uses a trusted server’s tools.

Confused deputy behavior

A server may act with its own broader privileges rather than the permissions of the user who made the request. The agent then becomes a path to data the user should never have reached.

Exfiltration through ordinary-looking arguments

Data can leave inside the parameters of a legitimate tool call, such as a search query or an email body, after a prompt injection convinced the model to include it.

  • EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.

Over-scoped credentials and untrusted packages

OAuth tokens with far more scope than the task needs, compromised or untrusted server packages, message replay or tampering, and local sandbox escapes round out OWASP’s list.

The human-approval trap

Asking a person to approve each action looks like a safeguard. Google Cloud’s guidance on its MCP servers notes that human oversight is still vulnerable to people approving malicious or destructive actions without verifying them. Agent-only operation is worse in a different way: it depends entirely on the agent’s programming and can fall to prompt injection, insecure tool chaining and naive error handling. Approval prompts are worth keeping for sensitive actions, but they sit on top of identity and enforceable policy rather than replacing them.

What a gateway’s job actually is

A gateway sits at the boundary between agent and MCP server and does the things the model cannot be trusted to do for itself:

  • Authenticate and identify the agent and the user behind it.
  • Authorize each server, tool and sometimes resource, so an agent only sees what its task needs.
  • Intercept calls and apply allow, deny or require-approval decisions in code rather than in a prompt.
  • Inspect responses and arguments, where the product supports it, for sensitive data or injected instructions.
  • Record decisions so an incident can be reconstructed afterward.

The draft “MCP Security Gateway, Version 1.0” from the Microsoft Agent Governance Toolkit maintainers (last reviewed 2026-09-24) describes this kind of call interception and response checking. It is one proposed design in draft form, not a requirement of the MCP protocol, and its requirements describe intended behavior rather than measured results.

The gateway does not replace permissions at the downstream server. If the server’s own credentials are too broad, a gateway only narrows how an agent reaches them. Keep both layers tight.

A baseline checklist

These controls come from the OWASP and Google Cloud guidance. A gateway can enforce many of them, but several have to be configured at the servers and identity provider as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Give each agent its own identity and grant only the roles and permissions its task needs. Where API keys are unavoidable, restrict them by application and by API (Google Cloud).
  • Use per-server credentials with narrow scopes, short-lived where the system supports it. OWASP’s example: a read-only mail scope instead of a modify or full-access scope.
  • Review and pin tool definitions. Check names, descriptions, parameter schemas and return schemas, pin what you reviewed, and review every change. Pinning has a limit: it cannot detect a server whose behavior changes behind an unchanged schema.
  • Enforce call policy in an authorization layer. Allow/deny rules and approval for sensitive actions should not depend only on model instructions.
  • Separate untrusted content from instructions, isolate user and tenant state, and protect sensitive data the agent handles (Google Cloud).
  • Audit policy decisions and tool use in a form that supports investigation without needlessly capturing secrets. Logging behavior varies by implementation, so check what a given gateway records by default rather than assuming it is safe.

Three implementations, three different scopes

“MCP gateway” covers quite different products. These examples come from vendor documentation and show why you should compare scope, not the label.

Example What the documentation describes Scope and limits
Microsoft Global Secure Access MCP firewall A network-based, identity-centric control that inspects MCP traffic and applies allow/block policy to servers, tools, resources, prompts, methods and protocol versions. Labeled preview in Microsoft Learn. Requires TLS inspection. Covers remote streamable HTTP and SSE; local/stdio traffic and JSON-RPC batches are not inspected.
Docker MCP Gateway A boundary meant to limit what a malicious or compromised connected server can read, receive, log or route through the host, within configured grants. Docker’s security model does not claim to stop malicious content, or abuse of access an operator deliberately granted to a server. It trusts the local OS user, Docker components, credential store, interceptors and local configuration.
Microsoft MCP Gateway (project) Microsoft Entra authentication and basic application-role authorization for MCP servers and tools, with resource checks when agent definitions reference tools or peers. A project implementation, not a general guarantee about MCP gateways. Its authorization model is described as basic role-based.

The Docker row is a local, host-side boundary around servers; the Microsoft firewall row is a network control over remote traffic. They guard different paths, so one does not substitute for the other.

How to compare gateways

  1. Placement: does it run locally, in the network path, or as a proxy your agents must be configured to use? Anything that can bypass it is unprotected.
  2. Server coverage: local stdio servers, remote servers, or both.
  3. Transport and protocol support: streamable HTTP, SSE, stdio, batching. Unsupported traffic may pass uninspected, as with the preview firewall above.
  4. Identity and authorization model: per-agent and per-user identity, role mapping, and whether decisions reach down to individual tools.
  5. Inspection depth: requests only, or responses too; whether it checks schemas for changes.
  6. Audit detail: what is logged, where it goes, and how secrets are handled.
  7. Operational requirements: TLS inspection, certificate deployment, latency, and who maintains policy.

There is no comparative benchmark in the sources reviewed for this article, so no product is ranked here. No breach counts, attack rates or measured gateway effectiveness figures were found in the primary guidance, and none are claimed.

Where gateway protection ends

A gateway is an enforcement and visibility layer, not proof that content or actions are safe. Three limits matter in practice:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Granted access stays granted. If you allow an agent to read your mailbox and send email, an injected instruction that uses exactly those permissions is within policy. Docker’s model states this explicitly. Narrow scopes, not inspection, are the answer.
  • Prompt injection is not eliminated. A gateway can block calls and flag content, but the model still reads untrusted text, and it may interpret it unsafely.
  • Coverage gaps are silent. Local stdio servers, unsupported transports or traffic that avoids the gateway get no protection, and nothing in the agent will tell you.

Use a gateway where the cost of a wrong call is high or where servers are remote and shared. Pair it with scoped identities, reviewed and pinned schemas, and approval steps for irreversible actions, and treat the combination as the control, not the gateway alone.
