A driver update can fix a specific bug or compatibility problem, but neither Microsoft nor device makers publish a measured speed, battery-life, or stability gain for a power driver update, so treat “better performance” as a possible side effect rather than a guaranteed result.
Identify the driver before you download anything
“Power driver” is a loose term. It can mean a chipset driver, a power-management driver, or a driver for a battery or system device. Your first job is to find the exact device name, because that determines which package is correct.

- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category that holds the device you want to check. Power-related entries often appear under System devices or Batteries, depending on the hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Properties. Note the device name, then open the Driver tab.
- Write down the Driver Date, Version, and Provider shown there. You will compare these later.
- Find your PC model. Open Settings > System > About for the device name, and press Windows + R, type
msinfo32, and press Enter to read System Model and System Type in System Information.
If the device name in Device Manager is generic, such as a “Microsoft ACPI” entry, the model in System Information is usually the more useful identifier when you search the manufacturer’s site.

Update through Windows Update first
Microsoft’s preferred general route is Windows Update. Many driver updates arrive automatically, but some are classed as optional and wait for you to choose them.

- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Select Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, tick the drivers you want, and select Download & install.
- Restart when prompted, then recheck the driver in Device Manager.
Menu labels change between Windows versions and builds, so if you do not see these exact names, look for the optional updates area in the same Windows Update section. Microsoft’s documentation states that optional drivers are not installed automatically, which is why an update you expected may not appear until you check this list.
Install a manufacturer driver when Windows Update has nothing
If Windows Update does not offer the driver you need, download it from the computer or component maker’s official support page. Microsoft directs users to the manufacturer for manual driver downloads. Avoid third-party driver download sites, since they cannot confirm that a package is the one the device maker certified for your model.

- On the manufacturer’s support page, enter your exact model and confirm the page is for your model, not a close relative.
- Choose the driver package for your Windows version. Check Settings > System > About and confirm the version and build.
- Confirm the architecture. Under System type in the same About page, you will see a 64-bit or 32-bit operating system and the processor type. Download a package that matches it.
- Extract the package to a folder you can find again. Do not run an installer you cannot identify.
- In Device Manager, right-click the device, select Update driver, then select Browse my computer for drivers.
- Select the folder you extracted, keep Include subfolders ticked, and follow the prompts. Restart if the wizard asks.
If the manufacturer offers its own installer, use that installer instead of the Device Manager method. The steps above apply when you have a driver package with an INF file.
Read the driver date and version with care
The date on the Driver tab is not a reliable test of whether a driver is correct or current. Microsoft explains that most drivers are built by hardware or software providers who work with Microsoft to certify compatibility. The provider sets the date metadata, so an older-looking date can belong to a driver that is still the right one. Windows Update then uses targeting information, not a simple date comparison, to decide which driver applies to your device.

When you compare an offered update with your installed driver, check the following:

What a driver update can and cannot do for performance
A driver update is a targeted fix, not a general speed-up. Keep these limits in mind:

- No attributable performance-gain figure for power driver updates appears in the official Microsoft guidance reviewed for this article. Any percentage claim for speed, battery life, or stability should be treated as unsupported unless the source names how it was measured.
- A newer driver will only help if it addresses the device’s actual problem. If the release notes do not mention the symptom you see, do not expect the update to change it.
- Installing several drivers at once makes it harder to tell which one caused a change. Update one device at a time where you can.
If the device misbehaves after an update
When a problem starts after an update, the cleanest recovery is usually to go back to the previous driver rather than install another “latest” package from an unknown source.
- Open Device Manager, right-click the device, and select Properties.
- On the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver. This button is available only when Windows still holds the previous driver. If it is greyed out, the earlier driver was not kept.
- If rollback is not available, uninstall the device from its Device Manager entry and restart. Windows will reinstall a driver, or you can install the manufacturer’s package from the steps above.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for audio devices describes rolling back the driver when a problem started after an update, and similar reasoning applies to other devices. Exact recovery steps for power-related hardware depend on the component and manufacturer. Before you uninstall a system or power-related device, create a restore point and confirm you have the manufacturer’s package downloaded. Removing the wrong device can leave a PC without power management until the right driver is reinstalled.

A note on Windows 10
Microsoft’s support page states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Driver availability and operating-system support are separate questions. A manufacturer can still publish a driver for a Windows 10 PC, but that does not mean Windows 10 receives the same ongoing security updates as a supported version. If you still run Windows 10, check its support status in Settings before deciding how urgently to update.
Driver updates are a maintenance task, and the steps above are general. For a specific computer, the manufacturer’s support page for that model remains the authoritative source for the driver you should install.
