To update a graphics card driver safely, identify the graphics processor (GPU) and operating system, check Windows Update if you use Windows, then install a matching driver through the GPU maker or computer manufacturer. Restart if prompted and confirm the installed version. On macOS, graphics support arrives through macOS updates rather than a separate, general-purpose graphics-driver download.
1. Identify your graphics card and operating system
The correct driver depends on both the GPU model and the operating system. Before downloading anything, find out whether your computer uses NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel graphics, and whether it is a laptop or desktop.

- Windows: Right-click Start, select Device Manager, and expand Display adapters. The listed name identifies the graphics hardware Windows recognizes.
- Vendor tools: NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel offer model-specific selection or detection routes if you need to identify a compatible package.
- Laptop: Check the laptop maker’s support page for the model’s recommended graphics driver before installing a generic driver.
Use only a package that matches your GPU and operating system. If the computer has more than one display adapter, make sure the driver you select is for the GPU you intend to update.

2. Check Windows Update first
Windows Update may offer a suitable driver. Optional driver updates are not installed automatically; Microsoft says, “Optional drivers aren’t installed automatically.”

- Restart if Windows asks you to, then check the driver version and test the game or application that prompted the update.
If no suitable graphics driver appears, use the official GPU vendor or computer maker’s support page instead. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so it no longer receives ordinary free updates from Microsoft.
3. Install the driver from the official source
Use the vendor path that matches your GPU. For laptops, check the computer maker’s recommendation first, especially for Intel graphics; a manufacturer-provided driver may be the intended choice for that model.

NVIDIA
- Open NVIDIA’s official driver download page.
- Select the product type, series, product, and operating system that match your GPU and computer.
- Review the offered package and install it according to NVIDIA’s instructions. NVIDIA describes Production Branch/Studio as the usual stability-oriented choice for most users. New Feature Branch releases are aimed at newer features, fixes, or operating-system support and have a shorter support duration.
NVIDIA also describes a supported update and notification utility; use NVIDIA’s official update information to check its current availability and instructions.
AMD
- Go to AMD Drivers and Support and choose a driver for your product, or use AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install tool.
- The auto-detect tool checks compatible Radeon graphics, Ryzen chipsets, and the Windows version, then presents available Recommended and Optional packages. Its documented coverage includes Windows 11 version 21H2 and later and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later.
- Install the matching package using AMD’s prompts. Recommended packages prioritize stability and Microsoft certification; Optional packages may provide newer support between Recommended releases.
Intel
- For a laptop, first visit the computer manufacturer’s support page and look up the exact model.
- If the manufacturer does not direct you to an OEM driver, use Intel Driver & Support Assistant to detect compatible updates, or search for the processor and driver in Intel Download Center.
- Install the driver that matches the hardware and operating system, following Intel’s or the computer maker’s instructions.
4. Choose a package that fits your needs
If the current driver works and you do not need a particular fix, feature, or application compatibility improvement, prefer the vendor’s stability-oriented or Recommended package. A newer feature-focused or Optional package may be useful when its listed changes address a problem you have, but a newer version does not guarantee a performance increase.

| Vendor package choice | What the vendor describes | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA Production Branch/Studio | Usual stability-oriented choice for most users | Choose for a working system when you do not need a specific newer feature or fix. |
| NVIDIA New Feature Branch | Newer features, fixes, or operating-system support; shorter support duration | Consider when a listed change addresses a specific need. |
| AMD Recommended | Stability-oriented and certified by Microsoft | Prefer for routine updates on a working system. |
| AMD Optional | May add newer support between Recommended releases | Consider when you need support or a fix in that package. |
5. Update graphics support on macOS, Linux, or Boot Camp
macOS
On macOS, install available system updates rather than looking for a Windows-style, general graphics-driver download. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. Graphics support for built-in or supported hardware is managed with macOS system software.
Linux
Linux driver steps depend on the distribution and GPU. Use the distribution’s driver manager or package repositories where appropriate, and follow its current official documentation alongside the GPU vendor’s guidance. NVIDIA documents an update utility that detects Linux environment details, but there is no single procedure established for every distribution.

Windows under Boot Camp
If Windows is running on a Mac through Boot Camp, follow Apple’s Windows support software instructions. Apple notes that an AMD graphics issue in Windows may require an AMD driver.
6. Restart and verify the update
- Restart if the installer requests it. If Windows has a restart pending, complete it before judging whether the original issue is fixed.
- Open the vendor control panel or utility and check the installed driver version against the version you intended to install. NVIDIA’s update information describes checking available and installed updates.
- Reopen the game or application that led you to update and see whether the issue has changed.
A driver update can provide a fix or support for particular software, but it cannot be assumed to increase performance on every system or repair faulty hardware. If a new driver causes a problem, use the GPU maker’s or computer maker’s official rollback or reinstall instructions rather than deleting driver files manually.
