How well a particular mirror does so depends on the wavelength band, the reflective coating, and how the mirror is built. A mirror that looks perfect in visible light tells you little about its performance in the infrared, and an ordinary bathroom mirror is not a dependable IR optic.
Why “reflects IR” is not a single number
Infrared is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths longer than visible red light. Reflectance is not one fixed value for all of it. A surface’s reflectance changes with wavelength, so the same mirror can return a large share of one infrared band and a smaller share of another. Technical references treat the visible range, near infrared (NIR), mid-wave infrared (MWIR), and long-wave infrared (LWIR) as separate bands for this reason.

What the NASA handbook data shows
NASA’s technical handbook tabulates metal mirror reflectivity separately for three bands: visible light (0.4–0.7 μm), MWIR (3–5 μm), and LWIR (10–14 μm). The same table shows that some metals make good infrared mirrors while performing poorly as visible mirrors. The example below uses one entry from that table, beryllium (Z-4), to show how the numbers change by band.
| Band | Wavelength range (NASA table) | Beryllium (Z-4) specular reflectivity |
|---|---|---|
| Visible | 0.4–0.7 μm | 0.50 |
| MWIR | 3–5 μm | 0.89 |
| LWIR | 10–14 μm | 0.92 |
These are values for one bulk metal in a handbook table, not for a household mirror. Do not generalise them to all mirrors. Confirm the handbook edition before quoting these figures, since the edition date could not be verified for this article.

- Temperature measurement range:-50℃-500℃ (-58℉-932℉)Display resolution: 0.1 ℃ or 0.1 ℉
- ℃/℉ conversion selection function
- LCD backlight (convenient for use at night). When backlight is on,any operations will activate the backlight.
- [Data hold]When pull the trigger, LCD display reading with SCAN icon. Release the trigger, display reading with HOLD icon. Built-in 8 sec auto power off function.
- [Emissivity:0.95 preset]Most organic materials and painted or oxidized surfaces have an emissivity of 0.95 (pre-set in the unit). Inaccurate readings will result from measuring shiny or polished metal surfaces. To compensate, cover the target surface with masking tape or flat black paint. Measure the tape or painted surface when the tape or painted reach the same temperature as the material underneath.
Why a household mirror is a poor infrared reference
A household mirror is usually a reflective metal layer on a glass sheet. In most of these mirrors, light reaches the coating only after passing through the glass. That is called a second-surface design. Its infrared behaviour therefore depends on both the glass and the coating, and neither one is specified on a typical mirror. Visible appearance does not reveal the infrared reflectance.
First-surface and second-surface mirrors compared
| Feature | First-surface mirror | Second-surface mirror (typical household type) |
|---|---|---|
| Where light meets the coating | Directly, at the front | After passing through the glass |
| Substrate dispersion | Avoided, because light does not pass through the substrate before the coating | Flagged by Edmund Optics as a concern for precision work |
| Extra reflections and ghost images | Avoided by the same construction | Flagged by Edmund Optics as a concern |
| Typical use | Precision optics and purpose-built IR systems | General viewing, such as household mirrors |
Edmund Optics recommends first-surface mirrors for precision optics. Its technical article describes these concerns as the reason to choose a first-surface design when image quality matters.

Surface quality changes the reflection
A smooth surface reflects specularly, meaning the rays leave at the mirror angle and form a clear image. A rough or irregular surface sends light in many directions and disrupts the image. The law of reflection still applies at each tiny facet, but a rough surface has many facets pointing in different directions, so no single directed return remains. Surface finish therefore matters alongside coating and wavelength.
How to choose an infrared mirror
If you are sourcing a mirror for an infrared system rather than a household use, check these points in order:

- 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲: The Lasergrip's 12:1 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆-𝒕𝒐-𝒔𝒑𝒐𝒕 𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐 enables you to accurately measure temperatures from a comfortable distance. For best results, position the thermometer approximately 14.17 inches / 36 centimeters away from the target.
- 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐬𝐞: Scan the surface of your object, hold down the trigger of the thermometer gun, get temp anywhere within the range of -58°–842°F / -50°–450°C. Then watch as your result appears on the bright LCD display in less than half a second.

This means the reading you see reflects the average temperature within the circular area targeted by the infrared sensor — not a single point. It also features a 𝒎𝒂𝒙𝒊𝒎𝒖𝒎 𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚 for additional insights.
- Operating wavelength: use the exact band you need, such as NIR, MWIR, or LWIR, rather than the broad label “infrared.”
- Reflectance over that band: read the reflectance specified across the range, not a value at a different wavelength.
- Construction: choose a first-surface design where image quality or precision matters, because light then does not pass through a substrate before the coating.
- Coating: Edmund Optics identifies gold coatings as effective for high reflectance in NIR and IR regions. A coating suited to one band is not automatically the best choice for another.
- Surface quality and geometry: a smooth specular surface and correct shape and alignment are needed for a directed optical path.
What the current evidence does and does not establish
The evidence establishes that metal mirrors reflect strongly in several infrared bands, that reflectance varies by band and material, and that construction affects the result. It does not establish a single reflectance figure for household mirrors, because that figure depends on each mirror’s glass, coating, wavelength, and condition. The handbook values above come from a table for specific materials, and the construction guidance comes from a supplier’s technical article. This article reports no new measurements of its own.
For a bathroom mirror, the honest answer is that it can reflect some infrared, but its performance cannot be stated without testing that specific mirror at the wavelength you care about.
