EAS Submit Failure Modes and What to Check Before You Submit

A documented checklist of EAS Submit failure modes, covering platform identity, credentials, submit profiles, artifacts, upstream build inputs and CI automation, with the check that catches each one.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most EAS Submit failures trace back to a short, predictable set of causes: the platform identity Expo expects, the store credentials available to the job, the submit profile that gets selected, the artifact being uploaded, the project inputs that went into the build, and the automation that triggers the submission. Each one has a check you can run before you submit again.

This guide is built from Expo’s documentation rather than from a log of individual incidents, so every check below is tied to a documented requirement or troubleshooting step. Where Expo’s documentation does not say something, this article does not say it either.

Separate submission problems from build and runtime problems

Before checking anything, decide which stage failed. The three stages look similar from the dashboard, but each has its own logs and its own fixes. Expo’s build troubleshooting guide covers build failures and crashes; submission errors are reported on the submission details page and in its logs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Stage What it does Where to look first
EAS Build Compiles your project on Expo’s build servers into an .ipa or .aab The build details page; expand failed phases and start with the earliest one
EAS Submit Uploads a finished, signed binary to App Store Connect or Google Play The submission details page and its logs; Build Annotations
Runtime The build succeeds, but the installed app crashes or stalls The app itself. This is not a submission failure

The distinction matters because the reports people usually file mix these stages together. Expo’s troubleshooting guide gives two common phrasings of the problem: “my app runs well locally but crashes immediately when I run a build,” and “my app works in Expo Go but hangs on the splash screen in my build.” Both describe a build or runtime symptom, not an upload rejection, so they call for the build-side and app-side checks below rather than a submission retry.

What EAS Submit does and does not handle

EAS Submit uploads app binaries. According to Expo’s submission overview, it does not manage store listing metadata, screenshots, or release notes; those are handled outside EAS Submit. Three consequences follow:

  • A successful upload does not mean the store listing is complete.
  • A successful upload does not mean the release is live. Store review and release steps happen in the store’s own console.
  • No pre-submit check can guarantee approval or protect against transient service problems. The checks below reduce avoidable failures; they do not replace the store’s review.

Platform prerequisites

The two platforms need different accounts, identifiers and credentials. Confirm the row for each platform you are submitting before you run the command.

Requirement iOS Android
Developer account Apple Developer account Google Play Developer account
Store app record App Store Connect app matching the configured bundle identifier Play Console app matching the package name
App identifier Bundle identifier in app configuration Package name in app configuration
Authentication App Store Connect API key, which Expo recommends by default; the iOS guide documents alternatives Google service-account key added to EAS
Artifact Production .ipa Valid .aab
Tooling listed by Expo’s guide EAS CLI and Expo authentication Not listed in Expo’s Android submission guide

Failure modes and the check that catches each

Wrong or incomplete platform identity

On iOS, verify that the bundle identifier in your app configuration matches the App Store Connect app you intend to update. On Android, verify that the package name matches an app that already exists in Play Console. Both are listed as prerequisites in Expo’s platform guides.

This check catches configuration mistakes before anything is uploaded. It cannot confirm that the store will accept the app.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference

Missing account access or credentials

For iOS, confirm that the account running the submission has access to the Apple Developer account and that App Store Connect authentication is set up. Expo recommends an App Store Connect API key as the default, and its iOS guide documents other options.

For Android, confirm that a Google service-account key has been created and added to EAS. In CI, confirm that the Expo token is injected into the job that runs the submission and that the store secrets are available in the environment that job uses. Expo documents EXPO_TOKEN for non-interactive submission from other CI/CD services. Never paste credential contents into logs, tickets or public examples.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If EAS Submit is temporarily unavailable, Expo’s iOS guide describes manual upload with Xcode as a fallback.

Wrong submit profile or a prompt in a non-interactive job

Open the submit section of eas.json and confirm two things: the command selects the profile you intend, and every required value for that profile is present. If you do not name a profile, Expo’s eas.json reference says eas submit uses production when that profile is defined.

When required values are missing, the CLI may stop and ask for them interactively. That prompt is harmless on your laptop and fatal in a CI job that has no terminal. Put every required value in the profile, then run the submission in non-interactive mode so a gap fails immediately instead of waiting:

Wrong or unsigned build artifact

EAS Submit can select a build for you or accept a file path. Before uploading, confirm the platform and the exact build ID or file path. The overview accepts valid .aab and .ipa files, and the binary must be correctly signed:

  • Android signing uses an upload keystore.
  • iOS needs a distribution certificate and a provisioning profile.

A wrong artifact is easy to pass by accident when several builds exist for the same version. Matching the build ID or path to the release you intend to ship is the simplest check here.

Missing source files, environment mismatch, or an upstream build failure

EAS Build uploads your project files to Expo’s build servers. A file excluded by .gitignore is not uploaded, so an import of that file can fail with a missing-file error on the build server even when it works locally. The fix is not to commit secrets. Expo describes safer approaches, such as creating the needed file from a secret inside a build hook, or refactoring sensitive client-side imports so the file is not required at build time.

When a local release build works but EAS Build fails, Expo recommends checking three things:

  • Environment variables available to the build.
  • Tool versions used by the build compared with your local toolchain.
  • The contents of the uploaded archive, to confirm required files are present.

For monorepos, confirm the project root or base directory the build uses. These are upstream build problems. They surface before submission, so a submission retry will not fix them.

A build trigger that never dispatches, or automatic submission that is misconfigured

For builds started from a GitHub integration, confirm the repository connection and, in a monorepo, the base directory. Confirm there is a build profile in eas.json that matches the trigger. Expo states that if a matching profile cannot be found, the build will not dispatch. This looks like a missing build rather than a failed one, so check the trigger configuration first.

For automatic store submission, confirm the correct credentials and the submission profile in eas.json. The Expo GitHub build trigger documentation covers the integration setup.

Reading logs incorrectly or mixing build and runtime failures

Start with the right page. Upload errors appear on the submission details page. Build errors appear on the build details page, where you expand failed phases and inspect the earliest one first. Later failed phases can be consequences of the first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that every [stderr] line is the root error. Expo notes that [stderr] output can contain warnings or diagnostics that are not the cause. Expo’s troubleshooting guide puts the first step plainly: “Before you go further, you need to be sure that you have located the error message and read it.” (Expo, “Troubleshoot build errors and crashes.”)

If the build succeeds but the app crashes or hangs on the splash screen, the problem is in the app at runtime, not in EAS Submit. Fixing it requires app-side debugging, not a change to submission settings.

Pre-submit routine

  1. Confirm the platform, the app identity and the intended store destination.
  2. Confirm the developer account and platform credentials are configured for that platform.
  3. Inspect the selected build profile and submit profile, and make sure no required value would trigger a prompt in CI.
  4. Confirm the correct signed artifact is passed to the submission command.
  5. For upstream build risk, check that required source files are in the uploaded archive and that environment variables and tool versions match what the build expects.
  6. For automated runs, verify the base directory, the matching build profile, the token, the store secrets and the submission profile.

This routine follows Expo’s documented prerequisites and troubleshooting guidance. It does not guarantee an accepted upload or an approved release.

After a failure: capture the evidence before you retry

Retrying without a record makes the next failure harder to diagnose. Before you run the command again, write down:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

  • The exact error text from the submission or build details page.
  • The platform and the submit profile that ran.
  • The artifact: build ID or file path.
  • The run link for the CI job, if the submission ran from automation.

Then decide which stage failed using the table at the top of this guide. A submission error, a build error and a runtime crash each lead to a different fix, and retrying the wrong one wastes a release cycle.
