The current dedicated-server documentation explains how to install and expose a server, but it does not publish a minimum memory amount, processor model, core count, clock speed, benchmark, or player-to-hardware formula. Capacity depends on the player limit, map, Workshop downloads, plugins, operating system, and the number of server instances you run.

You can host on Windows or Linux. macOS hosting is explicitly unsupported. Choose self-hosting when you can maintain the machine and network; choose a rented game-server service when you want someone else to handle the operating system, connectivity, and routine maintenance.

What Unturned officially requires
The authoritative setup pages establish the software and platform requirements, not a hardware shopping list. Unturned multiplayer servers use the separate Unturned Dedicated Server application installed and updated through Valve’s SteamCMD. The documented anonymous-install command is:
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 1110390 +quit1110390 is the Steam application identifier for the server; it is an installation ID, not a RAM, CPU, or player-capacity statistic. Running the same app_update 1110390 command updates an existing installation. The installation process is described in the Unturned server-hosting guide.

The advanced setup documentation states: “Servers can be hosted on Windows and Linux operating systems. There is no support for hosting on macOS devices.” Read that as a platform boundary: a Mac can be used as a client, but the documented dedicated-server host operating systems are Windows and Linux.
RAM and CPU: what is known and what is not
The official pages reviewed do not state any of the following:

- a required processor generation, core count, or clock speed;
- a supported player-count-to-hardware chart;
- a benchmark for a particular map, Workshop collection, or plugin set; or
- a universal network-throughput target.
That means a number copied from a hosting advertisement or a community answer should be treated as that author’s estimate, not as an official Unturned requirement. The community wording “How much RAM does an Unturned server use?” is a reasonable question, but it does not supply a universally valid answer for every version and workload.

The setup documentation confirms that maps, passwords and maximum players are configurable, while the Workshop configuration file controls add-ons. It does not quantify how any of those settings translate into memory or processor use. The sensible approach is therefore to measure your own workload instead of treating an unqualified specification as a guarantee.
How to estimate capacity without inventing a specification
If you need a hardware decision, make it a workload test with the exact software and content you intend to run. A useful estimate has these inputs:

- Define the target. Record the maximum players, map, game version, Workshop items, plugins, operating system and whether voice, bots or scheduled jobs will run on the same machine.
- Start with a clean dedicated-server install. Do not infer server capacity from the RAM used by a player’s copy of the game; the dedicated application and its workload are different.
- Measure idle and active states. Observe memory, CPU utilization, disk activity and network traffic while the server is empty, during normal play and at the expected peak. Windows Task Manager/Resource Monitor and Linux tools such as
toporhtopcan show the host’s load. - Repeat with the real content set. Add Workshop items and plugins before drawing conclusions. A lightly modded test does not establish capacity for a heavily modded server.
- Leave operating-system headroom. The server should not consume all available memory or processor time; reserve capacity for the OS, updates, monitoring, backups and brief workload spikes. No official source supplies a numeric headroom percentage, so do not present one as a rule.
- Test during the busiest scenario you can reproduce. A quiet lobby is not a peak test. Have the intended number of players join, travel through the map and use the features your group actually relies on.
Keep the test record with the game version, date, map, player count and add-on list. Those details make a result reproducible and prevent a one-time observation from being mistaken for a universal requirement.

Windows or Linux with SteamCMD
The official advanced guide uses SteamCMD for both supported operating systems. Install SteamCMD, sign in anonymously, and run the application-update command shown above. Re-running it is the documented update path.
Server files, configuration and savedata are organized under a directory named for the server’s ID. Keep that directory in a location with enough space for the base files, Workshop downloads, logs and backups; the official pages do not provide a disk-capacity number.
Start the instance
On Windows, the guide provides ServerHelper.bat; on Linux, it provides ServerHelper.sh. The examples distinguish an InternetServer launch from a LanServer launch. Use the helper and mode appropriate to your intended access, and follow the current parameters in the SteamCMD advanced-setup documentation.
Use the documented shutdown command from the server console when stopping an instance. A clean shutdown lets the server save and close instead of leaving files in an uncertain state. The setup guidance specifically calls attention to manual save and shutdown rather than assuming an autosave feature.

Configure map, players and Workshop content
Core server settings
The basic configuration includes the map, an optional password and the maximum-player value. Set the maximum to the size of your intended group, then validate that setting under a realistic load; the documentation does not promise that every map or add-on combination behaves identically at the same player count.
Workshop downloads
List Workshop add-ons in WorkshopDownloadConfig.json. The server retrieves and updates configured items during startup. Workshop content can increase download time, disk use and runtime workload, but the official documentation does not publish a memory or CPU allowance for a particular item. Record the exact collection and versions when testing.
LAN access versus public internet access
LAN or friends-only play
A LAN server is not listed in the public Multiplayer menu by default. The simple setup documentation describes joining through Steam friends or a Server Code. This is usually the least complicated arrangement when everyone is on the same local network or can use the documented friend/code join flow.
Internet-accessible play
For a public internet server, configure a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) and then choose either Fake IP or port forwarding. The official wording is: “For an internet server, you must configure either Fake IP or Port Forwarding. Configuring both is not necessary.” The documentation describes Fake IP as easier and adequate for most servers.

If the server runs behind a home router, the hosting guide says port forwarding is needed for internet access. Router menus differ by manufacturer, so forward the ports and protocol specified by the current Unturned documentation, then test from a network outside your home. Do not assume that a server visible from the host computer is reachable from the internet.

Keep the GSLT private, and verify that the server appears and accepts a connection before inviting a full group. If friends cannot connect, check the selected InternetServer mode, token, Fake IP or forwarding rule, host firewall and the router’s public-address situation in that order.

No provider-specific price, capacity, backup policy or plugin guarantee is established by the official Unturned documentation. Before renting, ask for the current Unturned version, server location, resource allocation and measurement method, Workshop support, plugin policy, backup schedule, support scope, renewal price and cancellation terms.
Running more than one server
Multiple instances change both the installation and capacity questions. The official advanced guide says running multiple servers from the same computer is not possible without SteamCMD and recommends SteamCMD for that setup. Give each instance its own server ID directory and configuration, then measure the combined CPU, RAM, disk and network load rather than adding isolated estimates that were never published.
Separate maps or Workshop collections can have different startup and runtime behavior. Test the instances simultaneously, including the time when both download or update content, and shut them down cleanly so each server saves its own data.
Common mistakes and fixes
Using the player game instead of the dedicated tool
A normal Unturned installation is not the documented hosting path. Install the dedicated application with SteamCMD and keep it updated with app_update 1110390.
Expecting a LAN server to appear publicly
LAN visibility and public listing are different. Use the friend or Server Code method for a LAN setup, or configure GSLT plus Fake IP or port forwarding for internet access.
Configuring both Fake IP and port forwarding
The official guide says both are unnecessary. Select the method that suits your network and follow its current instructions; adding the other method does not create a documented performance benefit.
Underestimating Workshop startup work
Items listed in WorkshopDownloadConfig.json are downloaded or updated at startup. Allow time and disk space for that operation, and test the complete collection rather than an empty server.
Stopping the process abruptly
Use the documented save and shutdown command from the server console. Abrupt termination can leave the latest state unsaved and complicate recovery.

Buying hardware from an unsupported number
Because no official RAM, CPU or player formula exists, a single “minimum” figure cannot guarantee a smooth result. Ask for transparent measurements tied to your exact version, map, content and player count, or perform the capacity test described earlier.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Windows or Linux; do not plan on a macOS host.
- Install and update the dedicated server through SteamCMD.
- Set the map, password, maximum players and Workshop configuration.
- Decide between LanServer and InternetServer operation.
- For internet access, obtain a GSLT and configure either Fake IP or port forwarding.
- Measure the complete workload instead of relying on an uncited RAM or CPU claim.
- Arrange backups, clean shutdowns and an update routine.
- If renting, verify current resources, location, Workshop/plugin support, backups and renewal terms before paying.
The official hosting guide is dated November 1, 2022, while the SteamCMD and server-setup pages reviewed do not display publication dates. Installation identifiers and access procedures can change, so check the current Unturned server setup documentation and hosting guide when you deploy.
