Connect PHP to a remote MySQL server with the PDO_MYSQL driver, using the database server’s DNS name (or IP address), its listening port, and a MySQL account permitted to connect from the PHP server. A typical connection is:

<?php
$dsn = 'mysql:host=db.example.com;port=3306;dbname=app;charset=utf8mb4';
$options = [
    PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE => PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION,
    PDO::ATTR_DEFAULT_FETCH_MODE => PDO::FETCH_ASSOC,
    PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES => false,
];

$pdo = new PDO($dsn, getenv('DB_USER'), getenv('DB_PASSWORD'), $options);

Replace db.example.com, app, and the credentials with values for your environment. If the database is on another machine, do not use localhost: PDO_MYSQL treats that name as a Unix-socket connection on the PHP host.

What a remote PHP-to-MySQL connection actually requires

PHP is the client and MySQL is the server. The PHP process must be able to reach the MySQL listener over the network, and MySQL must accept the account from the PHP server’s source address. A successful connection therefore depends on four independent layers:

  • PHP support: the runtime has the pdo_mysql extension enabled.
  • Addressing: the DSN uses the database server’s hostname or IP address and the correct TCP port.
  • Network access: DNS, routing, bind settings, firewalls, cloud security groups, and network ACLs allow the traffic.
  • MySQL authorization: the username, password, database, and account host permissions are correct.

Troubleshooting is much faster when these layers are checked in that order. A timeout is a network problem, while “Access denied” proves that the server was reached and the failure is now at authentication or account permissions.

Use the correct host and port

Why localhost fails for a remote server

In PDO_MYSQL, localhost has special behavior: the client attempts a Unix domain socket connection on the same machine as PHP. It does not mean “the computer where MySQL happens to be running.” If MySQL is on a different server, the socket is not there, so the connection fails or reaches an unintended local installation.

Use the remote server’s DNS name or IP address instead:

$dsn = 'mysql:host=db.example.com;port=3306;dbname=app;charset=utf8mb4';

For a local TCP test, use 127.0.0.1 rather than localhost. That distinction is useful when diagnosing a local server, but it does not make a remote connection; the address must identify the remote host.

Finding the endpoint

Use the endpoint supplied by your database administrator or hosting service. For a managed service such as Amazon RDS, AWS instructs clients to use the DB instance endpoint as the host and the endpoint’s configured port. Do not substitute a web-site URL, an internal application URL, or the name of a database schema for the endpoint.

The standard MySQL port is 3306, but installations can use another port. Put the actual listening port in the DSN and in every firewall or security-group rule. A correct hostname with the wrong port produces a refusal or timeout that looks like an application failure.

Prerequisites checklist

  1. Enable PDO_MYSQL. PDO is the PHP data-access interface; PDO_MYSQL is the driver that gives it MySQL support. Confirm the extension is loaded in the same PHP runtime that executes your application. php -m is a quick CLI check; a web server can use a different PHP installation, so verify the web runtime as well.
  2. Record the endpoint and port. Obtain the database DNS name or IP address and the port on which MySQL listens.
  3. Make MySQL listen on a reachable interface. MySQL’s bind_address setting controls the addresses used for TCP/IP listening. Binding only to loopback prevents remote clients from connecting.
  4. Open the network path. Permit the port in the database host firewall, cloud security group, and any network ACL or intervening firewall. For external Amazon RDS clients, AWS requires a suitable inbound security-group rule.
  5. Create a restricted account. The MySQL account’s host pattern must include the PHP server’s source address or network. Grant only the schemas and operations the application needs.
  6. Test from the PHP host. Resolve the hostname and test TCP reachability before changing PHP code. This separates DNS and network faults from DSN or credential faults.

Build a robust PDO connection

1. Define a DSN

The PDO MySQL DSN starts with mysql: and accepts components such as host, port, dbname, and charset. Include the character set explicitly so text is exchanged as UTF-8:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
$dsn = 'mysql:host=db.example.com;port=3306;dbname=app;charset=utf8mb4';

dbname selects the initial schema after login. It does not create that schema and does not override the privileges assigned to the account.

2. Set predictable options

Use exceptions for connection and query failures, associative arrays for fetched rows, and native prepared statements:

$options = [
    PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE => PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION,
    PDO::ATTR_DEFAULT_FETCH_MODE => PDO::FETCH_ASSOC,
    PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES => false,
];

With exception mode enabled, a failed connection throws PDOException instead of silently returning an unusable handle. Disabling emulated prepares asks the MySQL driver to use server-side prepared statements where supported.

3. Read credentials outside the source file

Keep the username and password in environment variables or a secret manager, not in a repository, a public configuration file, or an error message:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
$user = getenv('DB_USER');
$password = getenv('DB_PASSWORD');

$pdo = new PDO($dsn, $user, $password, $options);

Give the application a dedicated account. Do not use a general administrative account, and do not print the DSN, password, or complete exception details to visitors. Log enough server-side information to diagnose the failure while redacting credentials.

4. Handle failures without leaking secrets

try {
    $pdo = new PDO($dsn, $user, $password, $options);
} catch (PDOException $e) {
    error_log('Database connection failed: ' . $e->getMessage());
    http_response_code(500);
    exit('The application could not connect to its database.');
}

In production, the client-facing response should remain generic. The server log should be protected because driver errors can contain hostnames, usernames, or other deployment details.

Configure MySQL and the network for remote access

MySQL listening address

MySQL can listen on loopback, a private interface, or multiple interfaces. The bind_address system variable determines where TCP/IP connections are accepted. Select the narrowest interface that still serves the application. Binding to every interface may make the port reachable from networks that should never see it; compensate with firewall rules if a broader bind is unavoidable.

Firewalls, security groups, and ACLs

Allow inbound traffic only from the PHP server’s address or private network, not from the entire internet. For a managed database, the equivalent control is usually a security-group rule. For a self-managed server, check the host firewall and any cloud-level firewall separately. A rule must match both the correct protocol (TCP) and the exact MySQL port.

Routing and DNS

The PHP host must resolve the database name to an address it can route to. Private endpoints generally require the application to be in the same private network or connected through an approved network path. Public endpoints require stronger exposure controls and TLS. Confirm that the hostname in the DSN is exactly the endpoint you were given; a typo results in “could not resolve host,” while a valid but unreachable address results in a timeout.

Encrypt traffic with TLS

Credentials and query data cross the network during a normal connection. Use TLS whenever the path crosses an untrusted network. AWS states that an unencrypted MySQL connection should be used only when the client and server are in the same VPC and the network is trusted.

PDO_MYSQL exposes attributes for a CA certificate, client certificate, client key, cipher selection, and server-certificate verification. A deployment-specific example is:

$options = [
    PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE => PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION,
    PDO::ATTR_DEFAULT_FETCH_MODE => PDO::FETCH_ASSOC,
    PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES => false,
    PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_SSL_CA => '/path/to/ca.pem',
    PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_SSL_VERIFY_SERVER_CERT => true,
];

$pdo = new PDO(
    'mysql:host=db.example.com;port=3306;dbname=app;charset=utf8mb4',
    getenv('DB_USER'),
    getenv('DB_PASSWORD'),
    $options
);

Use the CA file issued for your database service and a path readable by the PHP process. Verification must remain enabled in production so a certificate for another host cannot be accepted silently. A TLS error commonly means the CA path is wrong, the certificate hostname does not match the DSN host, the server certificate is expired, or the system clock is incorrect.

Verify connectivity before debugging application code

Run checks from the same machine, container, or hosting environment that runs PHP; testing from your laptop can produce a misleading result because it uses a different network path.

  1. Check name resolution. Use the platform’s DNS utility (for example, getent hosts db.example.com on systems that provide it) and confirm that an address is returned.
  2. Check TCP reachability. Use an approved TCP test utility such as nc -vz db.example.com 3306, if available. A successful TCP check proves that the port is reachable, not that credentials are valid.
  3. Check the PHP module. Confirm pdo_mysql is loaded by the PHP SAPI serving the site.
  4. Run the smallest PDO test. Execute a script that only constructs the PDO object and reports success to a protected administrator, never to anonymous visitors.
  5. Test a harmless query. After connecting, run a simple statement such as SELECT 1 and then verify that the intended database is selected.

If DNS and TCP tests fail, changing the DSN options or SQL will not help. Fix the network path first.

Diagnose common errors

Error or symptom What it indicates Checks and fixes
Could not resolve host The PHP host cannot translate the DSN hostname to an address. Verify the exact endpoint, DNS configuration, search domains, and private-network DNS access.
Connection refused An address was reached, but no service accepted the TCP connection on that port. Confirm MySQL is running, the port is correct, and bind_address includes a reachable interface. Check host and cloud firewalls.
Connection timed out Traffic is being dropped or has no route. Check routing, security groups, ACLs, firewall rules, VPN or private-link connectivity, and the source address allowed by the database network.
Access denied for user The server was reached, but authentication or account host authorization failed. Verify the username, password, selected database, and the MySQL account’s permitted source host. Ensure the application is using the intended secret.
Authentication-plugin error The PHP client or mysqlnd version may not support the server’s authentication method. Check client compatibility and upgrade PHP where possible. PHP documents support for MySQL 8’s caching_sha2_password in PHP 7.4.4 and later.
TLS or certificate error The encrypted session could not be established or verified. Check the CA file, certificate hostname, certificate validity, system time, file permissions, and whether verification is enabled with the correct CA.
Connection succeeds but queries fail The account lacks a needed privilege, the wrong schema was selected, or the SQL is invalid. Confirm dbname, inspect grants with an administrator, and use prepared statements for values.

Query safely after connecting

A working connection is not a reason to concatenate user input into SQL. Use a prepared statement for every value supplied by a request:

$statement = $pdo->prepare(
    'SELECT id, email FROM users WHERE email = :email'
);
$statement->execute(['email' => $email]);
$user = $statement->fetch();

Prepared statements address value binding; they do not grant privileges. The database account still needs only the permissions required by the application. Keep schema or column names out of untrusted input, because placeholders bind values rather than SQL identifiers.

PDO or mysqli?

PDO and mysqli are both PHP interfaces to MySQL. PDO is used here because its documented mysql: DSN, options array, and exception model make the connection settings explicit and portable across PDO-supported database drivers. Choose mysqli when an existing codebase depends on it or when a MySQL-specific API is required.

Changing the PHP interface does not remove the underlying requirements: the endpoint, port, DNS, route, bind address, firewall, security group, TLS policy, and MySQL account host permissions remain the same.

Self-managed MySQL versus a managed endpoint

The connection code is nearly identical, but operational responsibilities differ.

Concern Self-managed MySQL Managed service such as Amazon RDS
Endpoint and port You choose the server address and configure the listener. The service supplies a DB instance endpoint and endpoint port.
Network exposure You configure interfaces, host firewalls, routing, and any cloud firewall. You configure the service’s network placement and inbound security-group rules.
TLS You obtain, install, renew, and trust the server certificate or CA. The provider publishes TLS guidance and CA material; the client still must configure verification.
Credentials You create accounts, restrict host patterns, and rotate secrets. You still manage application credentials and grants, while the service may provide additional secret-management integrations.
Backups and maintenance You are responsible for backups, upgrades, monitoring, and recovery. The provider supplies managed maintenance and backup features according to the selected service configuration.
Latency and cost Depend on your server location, capacity, and operating costs. Depend on the selected region, instance, storage, network path, and service pricing.

For either model, place PHP and MySQL as close as practical on a trusted private network, use TLS when the network is not fully trusted, and restrict inbound access to the application’s source addresses.

Production hardening checklist

  • Use a DNS endpoint that can be changed during failover instead of baking a transient IP address into source code.
  • Store DB_USER and DB_PASSWORD in an environment or secret manager and rotate them without committing code changes.
  • Use a dedicated, least-privilege MySQL account with an explicit source-host restriction.
  • Keep the database port off the public internet whenever a private network is available.
  • Require TLS across untrusted paths and verify the server certificate.
  • Set PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE to exceptions and monitor server-side connection errors.
  • Keep PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES disabled unless a documented compatibility requirement says otherwise.
  • Redact passwords and full connection strings from logs and error responses.
  • Test failover, expired certificates, rotated credentials, and revoked network rules before they become incidents.

Minimal complete example

This example combines the core settings while leaving deployment-specific endpoint, credentials, and certificate paths outside the file:

<?php
declare(strict_types=1);

$dsn = sprintf(
    'mysql:host=%s;port=%s;dbname=%s;charset=utf8mb4',
    getenv('DB_HOST'),
    getenv('DB_PORT') ?: '3306',
    getenv('DB_NAME')
);

$options = [
    PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE => PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION,
    PDO::ATTR_DEFAULT_FETCH_MODE => PDO::FETCH_ASSOC,
    PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES => false,
];

try {
    $pdo = new PDO(
        $dsn,
        getenv('DB_USER'),
        getenv('DB_PASSWORD'),
        $options
    );
    $pdo->query('SELECT 1');
} catch (PDOException $e) {
    error_log('Database connection failed: ' . $e->getMessage());
    http_response_code(500);
    exit('Database unavailable');
}

Add the TLS attributes shown earlier when the connection crosses an untrusted network or when the managed service requires certificate verification. The decisive details are always the real remote endpoint, reachable port, permitted source host, compatible PHP client, and correctly protected credentials.
