If a command-line tool installed with npm opens Windows’ “Unsupported 16-Bit Application” dialog, the file may be a tiny placeholder rather than a 16-bit program. That happened in a reported OpenCode installation where npm blocked the package’s postinstall script. First check the install output and the affected package: this explanation and its repair apply only when your warning and package layout match that case.
What the dialog does—and does not—tell you
The message means Windows cannot run the executable as presented; it does not, by itself, prove that the tool is actually a 16-bit application. A package may rely on an install-time script to replace a placeholder executable with the platform’s real binary. If that script does not run, launching the placeholder can produce an executable-format error.

In a July 13, 2026 GitHub issue, a Windows 11 Pro 24H2 user reported installing [email protected] globally with npm 12.0.0 and Node 24.18.0. The reporter found a 479-byte top-level bin/opencode.exe and a separate optional Windows package containing the real binary. Their npm log said the package’s postinstall script was blocked because it was not covered by allowScripts. This is one package-specific report, not a diagnosis for every CLI: OpenCode issue report.

- Identify the exact package and install method. Record the command you ran, such as
npm i -g opencode-ai, along with your Windows, Node, and npm versions. Save the complete npm output rather than relying on the dialog title. - Look for a warning naming the package. The relevant clue is a message that its lifecycle script was blocked or was not covered by
allowScripts. npm defines this setting as a comma-separated list of packages allowed to run install-time lifecycle scripts, includingpreinstall,install, andpostinstall. Its install documentation describes using the option in one-off and global install contexts: npm install documentation. - Check the executable and package layout. A very small top-level executable alongside a platform-specific binary supports the placeholder explanation. Do not treat the reported 479-byte size as a universal threshold; it was an observation from that individual OpenCode report.
- Check whether the failure followed installation or an update. A blocked postinstall during installation points toward a different recovery path than an invalid executable appearing after a tool’s self-update.
If the warning matches: approve only the needed package
For a package you have reviewed and trust, npm’s package-scoped option allows that package’s lifecycle scripts during installation. For the OpenCode package in the report, the warning suggested:

npm install -g --allow-scripts=opencode-aiUse the actual package name from your warning, not opencode-ai by default. Review what the package’s install script does before permitting it to run.
Do not use --dangerously-allow-all-scripts as a routine workaround. npm describes it as bypassing the script approval policy and strongly discourages its use; approving only the reviewed package is the narrower option.

If the package is already installed
Use the package maintainer’s recovery guidance where available, and verify the real installation path before running any script manually. In the cited OpenCode report, the user ran the package’s postinstall script from the global npm directory in PowerShell:

Treat this as an observed recovery for that reported package layout, not a general command for other npm tools. Do not run it unless the file exists at the confirmed path and you have verified that it belongs to the package you intend to repair.

If there was no blocked-script warning
The OpenCode fix is not established for a different package, a full-sized executable, or a failure that began after an update without a matching npm warning. Check the tool’s official Windows installation and update instructions, then investigate whether the downloaded binary is damaged or intended for a different platform. - Blocked-script warning plus tiny placeholder: package-specific script approval or maintainer-directed recovery may fit.
- No blocked-script warning, or a full executable: do not assume a placeholder was left behind; follow the package’s Windows guidance and check binary integrity and platform selection.
- Failure after self-update: investigate the updater’s binary and platform handling rather than assuming the original npm install was blocked.
