Talking Guide is DIRECTV’s spoken accessibility support for its on-screen menus and program guide. It reads interface text aloud, including program information and when shows are airing, so a viewer with a visual impairment can move through the guide without relying on the screen. DIRECTV documents the feature in connection with compatible Genie equipment. Its current support pages describe the same kind of help under the names VoiceView and TalkBack, and the exact label and setup path depend on the device or app you are using.
What Talking Guide reads aloud
The feature speaks text that is already shown on screen. In practice that means:

DIRECTV’s support article on VoiceView and TalkBack describes the purpose in plain terms, saying the feature is “a snap to use if you have a visual impairment.” The feature narrates the interface. It does not describe what is happening inside a show or movie, which is covered in a separate section below.

DIRECTV uses several labels for what is essentially the same category of spoken navigation. Use the name that matches your screen, because that is what the setting will be called.

On a DIRECTV device
- Open Settings.
- Select Preferences.
- Select Accessibility.
- Choose TalkBack and set it on or off.
DIRECTV’s support article also documents a remote shortcut: hold the Back and Home buttons together for five seconds. Use the menu path if you want a confirmed, step-by-step route; the shortcut is the quicker option when your remote’s buttons respond normally.

On Apple, Android, Fire TV, and Samsung TV apps
When you use DIRECTV through an app on another platform, the spoken feedback is controlled by that platform’s own screen-reader setting, not by a DIRECTV menu. Turn on the matching setting:

Menu names change with operating-system updates, so if a path does not match what you see, search the accessibility section of the device settings for the label in the table above.
On older Genie receivers
DIRECTV’s current device steps are written for its present menus. The support material does not establish that the same button sequence and menu path apply to every older Genie receiver. If you own an older model, open that receiver’s own accessibility menu first. Where it does not work
DIRECTV’s support article states that VoiceView or TalkBack is not available in web browsers or on Chromecast. If you plan to use DIRECTV through either, you will not get spoken navigation from this feature.
Talking Guide, audio description, and captions are different features
Viewers often mix up three separate tools. Each one helps with a different part of the experience, and they can be used together or on their own.

DIRECTV describes audio description separately in Get Descriptive Video Service info. Availability depends on each program, so a show may have narration on one channel and none on another.
If you need replacement hardware
The feature is controlled through software settings, so a new remote is not needed to turn it on. If your remote is lost or damaged, compatible DIRECTV Genie replacement remotes are sold online, including on Amazon. Check the model compatibility for your receiver before buying, because remotes vary between Genie generations.
