Install it from Settings → Optional features, restart Windows even if no restart prompt appears, then add any required Microsoft Store apps or codec extensions. It can restore missing media frameworks and dependencies, but it is not a universal fix for every playback, camera, Teams, or driver problem.
Check whether your PC has Windows N
- Open Settings.
- Go to System → About.
- Under Windows specifications, read the Edition field.
Qualifying editions end in N, such as Windows 10 Home N, Windows 10 Pro N, Windows 11 Home N, Windows 11 Pro N, or Windows 11 Enterprise N. Windows N editions, distributed primarily for European markets, omit specified media technologies while retaining the core Windows edition. Microsoft documents the Media Feature Pack requirement at its Media Feature Pack support page.
If the edition says only Home, Pro, Enterprise, or Education, do not install the pack as a generic codec repair. Investigate the application, drivers, permissions, Windows servicing, or DRM issue instead.
Install the pack on Windows 10 N
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps → Apps & features.
- Open Optional features.
- Choose Add a feature.
- Select Media Feature Pack, then choose Install.
- Restart the PC.
For Windows 10 version 1909 and later, Microsoft’s current guidance uses Optional Features rather than a universal standalone download. Older Download Center instructions may apply only to particular legacy releases. See the version and installation list.

Install the pack on Windows 11 N
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps → Optional features.
- Beside Add an optional feature, select View features.
- Search for or select Media Feature Pack.
- Select Next → Install.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft says a restart is required to complete installation even when Windows does not display a restart prompt.
Complete setup after the restart
- Repeat the action that originally failed: play the affected file, open Camera, test the webcam in Teams, try Live Captions or Voice typing, record with Snipping Tool, or play a OneDrive or Photos video.
- Install any separately packaged Microsoft Store apps or extensions that the feature needs.
- Run Windows Update.
- If a webcam, portable device, or other media hardware still fails, update or reinstall its driver. Microsoft notes that some features require driver reinstallation after the pack is added.
What the Media Feature Pack can restore
Microsoft describes these as features that may be unavailable or impaired without the pack. Installation does not guarantee that every item will work on every device.

These capabilities are described in Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack documentation; Microsoft also cautions that some features can remain nonfunctional after installation.
Install separate Store apps and codec extensions when needed
The pack supplies underlying Windows technologies; it is not necessarily a complete set of user-facing applications or every codec. Microsoft lists these additional downloads as potentially required, depending on the Windows release and the task:

- HEVC Video Extensions
- Skype
- Movies & TV
- Groove Music
- Windows Media Player or Windows Media Player Legacy
- Xbox Game Bar
- Windows Voice Recorder
Open the Microsoft Store, search for the named app or extension, and install it if it is available for your edition and region. HEVC, VP9, Web Media and HEIF are separate extensions; installing the Media Feature Pack alone does not promise that each one is present.

If Media Feature Pack is missing from Optional Features
- Edition mismatch: Confirm that the Edition field ends in N. A normal edition is not the intended target.
- Servicing or update access: Install pending Windows updates and retry. Optional Features needs access to Windows servicing content.
- Managed computer: WSUS, Intune, Group Policy or another organizational policy may block optional-feature downloads. Contact the administrator rather than changing registry or update-policy settings yourself.
- Newer build documentation: Microsoft’s consolidated list explicitly covers Windows 10 through 22H2 and Windows 11 21H2 and 22H2. Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 cases appear in community Q&A reports, so old version-specific download instructions may not match your build.
- Component-store damage or offline device: Windows may be unable to retrieve or register the capability.
Use DISM only as a fallback diagnostic
Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as Administrator. First inspect capabilities:

DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Media.MediaFeaturePack~~~~0.0.1.0This is fallback guidance from community troubleshooting, not a guarantee for every Windows build. Capability names can vary with build, language, edition and servicing configuration. Reports involving Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 include unrecognized or unavailable capability names; verify the edition and build before assuming the command is correct. A separate community-reported command for Windows Media Player is:
DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Media.WindowsMediaPlayer~~~~0.0.12.0Do not treat that command as an official universal prerequisite. Depending on the release, Windows Media Player or Media Player Legacy may instead be a separate app capability.

Work through installation errors in order
- Confirm the edition is Windows 10/11 N.
- Install pending updates, restart, and retry Optional Features.
- Check that Windows Update or organizational policy is not blocking optional-feature content.
- Use the DISM inspection and fallback command above as Administrator, verifying the build first.
- If DISM reports component-store corruption, repair Windows servicing before repeatedly adding or removing the capability. An offline DISM source must closely match the installed edition, language, architecture and build; advanced examples are discussed in this Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting thread.
- If servicing remains damaged, use the supported Windows repair-reinstall route or obtain administrator support.
When the pack is the wrong solution
Your edition is not N
Do not use the pack to repair a normal Windows installation. Check camera and microphone privacy permissions, application codec requirements, hardware drivers, Windows Update health, DRM restrictions and damaged system components instead.
Only one file or codec fails
A standalone media player or a specific Store extension may solve ordinary playback. That approach does not restore Windows Hello, Live Captions, Voice typing, Teams media dependencies, OneDrive or Photos integration, portable-device synchronization, or Windows screen recording.

You need Windows Mixed Reality
Microsoft’s N-edition documentation states that installing the Media Feature Pack does not make Windows 10 or Windows 11 N compatible with Windows Mixed Reality. A non-N Windows edition is required; see the older Windows 10 N guidance and current support documentation.
You are considering a non-N edition
Switching editions is a last-resort compatibility decision. It can involve licensing, backup, reinstall or edition-change constraints and, on managed devices, organizational approval.
Key points for newer Windows 11 releases
Microsoft’s official consolidated package list does not enumerate a dedicated Media Feature Pack article for every newer release. User-reported Q&A cases for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 show that the Settings entry or capability name can be missing or rejected. Therefore, use Optional Features first, confirm the exact build, and treat DISM commands as version-dependent diagnostics rather than a promised universal installer.
