“Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)” means Windows could not successfully identify a USB device. It does not, by itself, prove the device is broken or that a driver is to blame. Start by testing the connection path—port, cable and hub—then compare the device on another computer before changing Windows settings.
What the error means
Windows needs to read identifying information from a USB device during connection. The error indicates that this identification process, called enumeration, did not complete successfully. A Microsoft Q&A community explanation lists possible failures such as a timed-out port reset, unsuccessful address assignment, or a failed descriptor request; the message does not identify which component caused the problem. That leaves several possibilities: the device or its cable, a port or hub, the computer’s USB controller or internal connection, or Windows configuration. Work through the checks below in order, changing one part of the path at a time so the result is useful.
Check the USB connection before changing Windows
- Reconnect the device. Unplug it, wait briefly, and connect it again. If it is a desktop accessory, use a port directly on the computer rather than a hub or extension.
- Try a different port. A port on the back of a desktop is a useful direct-connection test. If the device works on another port, suspicion shifts toward the original port or its internal path; the test does not distinguish port damage from a controller or internal cabling issue.
- Bypass hubs and extensions. Connect directly to the computer. If that works, the hub or extension belongs in the suspected connection path, though the test does not prove which intermediary is at fault.
- Test a detachable cable. Use a known-good, compatible USB data cable. A charging-only cable will not provide the data connection needed for identification.
Microsoft-hosted community replies recommend trying a different port or cable and connecting directly rather than through a hub. These are isolation checks, not guaranteed fixes. Microsoft Q&A discussion and Microsoft Community discussion

Compare the device and computer
Test the device on another computer if one is available, ideally with a known-good cable and a direct port. Also try another known-good USB device on the original computer. Interpret the results as clues rather than a definitive diagnosis:
| Test result | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| The device works on another computer, but not this one | The original computer’s port, USB controller, internal connection, hub or Windows configuration becomes more suspect. This does not identify the failed part. |
| The device fails on multiple computers, including with a known-good cable and direct connection | The device or its cable becomes more suspect. A failure across computers does not prove the device itself is defective. |
| The device works in another port on the same computer | The original port or its internal path becomes more suspect; the result does not isolate the exact component. |
| The device works directly but fails through a hub or extension | The intermediary is part of the suspected path. Continue testing the hub or extension separately if needed. |
These comparisons help narrow where to investigate; they cannot conclusively distinguish a damaged port, controller, cable or device on their own. Microsoft Q&A community guidance

Check the physical port or internal connection
If failures are limited to one port, note whether it is a front-panel desktop port or a port connected through a dock or other intermediary. A front-panel port may depend on an internal connection to the motherboard. A Microsoft Q&A reply suggests checking internal USB headers and connections. Microsoft Q&A

Make Windows detect the device again
If the physical checks do not resolve the error, use Device Manager to remove the failed entry and let Windows detect it again. The exact labels can vary by Windows version.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Find the entry named Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed). If it is not there, check Other devices.
- Right-click the relevant unknown entry and choose Uninstall device, then confirm.
- Disconnect the USB device and restart the computer. Reconnect it directly to a port and check whether Windows identifies it.
If the error remains, Device Manager can also be used to uninstall a USB controller and restart the computer so Windows can redetect it. Be cautious: removing a controller can temporarily affect USB-connected input devices. If your keyboard or mouse uses USB, avoid doing this unless you can restart and regain control another way. Re-detection is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed repair. Community support replies describe removing the unknown entry or controller and restarting. Microsoft Community discussion

Check USB power settings only if the connection tests point to this computer
USB power-management settings are sometimes suggested as a troubleshooting avenue, but the error alone does not show that power management caused it. If the device works elsewhere and direct-port tests have not helped, you can test these settings and restore them if they make no difference.
Temporarily disable USB selective suspend
Open Control Panel, go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options, then choose Change plan settings for the active plan and Change advanced power settings. If USB settings and USB selective suspend setting appear, temporarily set the option to Disabled, apply the change, and test again. The labels or availability may differ by Windows version and power plan.

Review the USB Root Hub setting
In Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, open a USB Root Hub entry’s Properties, and check the Power Management tab if it is available. You can temporarily clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and test again. If there is no improvement, restore the original setting. Community replies suggest these checks, but they do not establish power management as a universal cause. Microsoft Community discussion
Use the computer maker’s driver and firmware guidance
If evidence points to one computer rather than one USB device, check the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support page for the specific model. Follow its instructions for chipset drivers and BIOS or UEFI updates; do not use generic driver-updater software or change unrelated firmware settings. A firmware update has model-specific requirements and can carry risk if interrupted, so follow the manufacturer’s process.
For a laptop, Microsoft Community Support Specialist Lynn Sun advised contacting the laptop manufacturer about a BIOS update and said persistent trouble might require depot repair or hardware replacement. That is support guidance dated May 21, 2022, not a diagnosis that every descriptor error requires firmware work. Microsoft Support Specialist reply
When to seek repair
Consider manufacturer support or qualified repair when testing consistently points to a hardware path:
- Several known-good USB devices fail on the same port or computer, while working elsewhere.
- One device continues to fail on multiple computers with known-good compatible cables and direct connections.
- A particular port is physically damaged, loose or unreliable, or a desktop’s internal USB connection needs inspection.
Before contacting support, record the affected device and connector, the Windows version, which ports and cables you tested, whether a hub was involved, and what happened on another computer. That evidence helps support staff distinguish a device-side issue from a host-side connection problem. Microsoft-hosted community sources do not establish a universal repair procedure; the appropriate next step depends on the device and computer model. Microsoft Community support discussion
