Start with your school’s requirements and the devices you already have—not a shopping list. A workable student tech budget covers only the equipment needed for your courses, checks whether an existing device can be upgraded or reused, and weighs support life against upfront cost. The available guidance does not establish that laptop prices have recently risen by a particular amount; broader education and living costs are a reason to plan carefully, not proof of technology inflation.
What technology do you actually need for school?
Ask your school, college, or program for its current device and software requirements before choosing a laptop or other equipment. Needs can differ by course: a program that relies on particular applications or peripherals may have requirements that do not apply to other students. Avoid selecting an operating system or performance tier until you know what your coursework requires.

The UK Department for Education’s guidance for schools and colleges recommends assessing how devices will be used, who will use them, and any additional technical requirements. That is useful decision-making advice, but it is not a universal specification for every student or institution. Confirm requirements directly with your school, especially before buying for a specialized program. UK Department for Education device guidance
How can you make room for technology in a student budget?
Federal Student Aid recommends choosing a budget period and tracking money coming in and going out. Include equipment, books, supplies, and personal expenses alongside tuition and housing; those variable costs can affect what you can spend on technology. - Compare ways to meet the need. Consider keeping or upgrading a working device, or buying new or refurbished, based on compatibility, support life, warranty, and total cost.
College Board publishes low and moderate regional living-expense budgets for 2025–26 and 2026–27. They are planning references for financial-aid officers setting budgets for independent students living off campus—not predictions of any one student’s actual expenses or on-campus costs—and should be adjusted to local circumstances. The guidance reports CPI inputs of 3.4% for 2023 and 2.9% for 2024, attributed to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those figures describe CPI, not student technology price changes. For a wider view of college cost differences, the U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency Center provides comparison tools and lists of institutions with high prices or fast cost increases. Institutions on relevant high-increase lists must explain why costs rose and what steps they have taken or will take to address them. These resources help contextualize institutional costs; they do not show that laptop prices rose. College Affordability and Transparency Center
Should you buy a new laptop or keep your old one?
Keep using a device if it meets your course requirements and has enough usable support life for your needs. Before replacing it, check whether a practical upgrade or a different use for the device could solve the problem. The UK Department for Education’s school and college guidance specifically advises checking whether existing devices can be upgraded or repurposed before buying new ones. This is an institutional standard, not a requirement imposed on every individual student.

When comparing options, look beyond the initial price:
- Course compatibility: Will it run the required software and connect to required peripherals?
- Remaining support: How long will the device receive operating-system and security support? Confirm the support policy for the exact model and region.
- Warranty and repair: Check the warranty term and whether repair or upgrades are practical for that device.
- Everyday fit: Consider portability and battery needs based on where and how you study.
- Total cost: Include any verified education pricing and the cost of upgrades or repairs when comparing a new, refurbished, or existing device.
As a benchmark for schools and colleges in the UK, the Department for Education says laptops and desktops should have five years of support and security patches and a three-year warranty. These are recommendations in that institutional guidance, not guaranteed terms for consumer devices or purchases elsewhere. Check the exact manufacturer’s support and warranty terms for the device you are considering.

| Comparison | What to check |
|---|---|
| Course compatibility | Match the device to your institution’s requirements, software, and peripherals. |
| Support and warranty | Verify remaining security support and warranty terms for the exact model and region. |
| Repair and upgrades | Find out whether the likely repair or upgrade is feasible and worthwhile. |
| Portability and battery | Assess against your own travel, class, and study routine; needs vary by student. |
| Total cost | Compare the purchase price plus any necessary upgrades or repairs, after verifying any education discount. |
Do not treat a long support promise or a low price as sufficient on its own: the device still has to work with your coursework.
When is a laptop lock worth considering?
A laptop lock is an optional security purchase for a student who leaves a device in a dorm room or shared space. Federal Student Aid advises students to lock dorm rooms and use a laptop lock; whether one is useful depends on the setting and the device. Federal Student Aid’s budgeting and security advice
Quick Recap
What cost pressures do the available figures show?
A 2025 Logitech-sponsored survey of 101 THE Journal readers—primarily educators, administrators, and K–12 IT decision-makers—reported that 83% identified budget constraints as influencing school or district hardware purchasing decisions, while 40% cited cost-effectiveness and value over time as a purchasing factor. This small, professionally focused survey is directional context about institutional buying, not a representative measure of student or family budgets. It does not establish a recent increase in student laptop prices. Logitech-sponsored 2025 ed-tech purchasing report
