Unity Android Builds: How to Choose Between IL2CPP and Mono

A recent Unity Android test found different build times and APK sizes for Mono and IL2CPP, but the APKs targeted different ABIs and could not support a runtime-speed comparison.

For an Android Unity build, choose between IL2CPP and Mono only after confirming that both support the ABI you need. Unity recommends IL2CPP when player builds need faster startup, stricter platform compliance, or more predictable performance, but it builds more slowly. A September 2026 test offers useful build-time and APK-size figures—not a valid runtime-speed comparison—because its Mono and IL2CPP APKs targeted different architectures and the Mono APK would not install on the test device.

What differs between Mono and IL2CPP?

Unity compiles C# scripts into managed assemblies. With Mono, the runtime just-in-time compiles managed code as the game runs. With IL2CPP, Unity strips unused managed code, converts the remaining assemblies into C++, and passes that code to a native compiler for ahead-of-time compilation.

The difference affects more than execution. It can change which Android architectures are available, how long builds take, startup behavior, and how code that depends on reflection or dynamic access must be preserved. Unity’s backend documentation lists Mono on Android Armv7 and advises checking the specific Unity version and target architecture rather than assuming both backends can produce equivalent builds.

What does the recent Android test actually show?

Indie Core Dev’s September 9, 2026 test used Unity 6000.4.0f1, a small one-scene project with a two-million-iteration managed loop, and an M3 Max batch build. It reported these results:

Backend Build time APK size Target ABI
Mono 108.9 seconds 27,301,649 bytes ARMv7
IL2CPP 230.4 seconds 14,323,788 bytes ARM64

In that test, the IL2CPP build took about 2.1 times as long, while its APK was 12,977,861 bytes smaller, or 47.5% less. These are results from one project and setup, not expected ratios for Unity Android projects generally. Most importantly, the artifacts targeted different ABIs: the comparison does not isolate backend effects while holding architecture constant.

Why there is no runtime-speed result

The Mono APK failed to install on the test’s Android 16/API 36 ARM64-only emulator. Without both builds running on a comparable device and ABI, the test could not compare their execution speed. It also declined to use its noisy IL2CPP launch measurements as a basis for a startup comparison. Do not treat an IL2CPP-only launch time as evidence that it beat Mono.

Which backend should you use?

Unity’s backend guidance says to prefer IL2CPP on platforms where both are available if player builds need faster startup, stricter platform compliance, and more predictable performance. That is directional guidance, not a promise of a particular speedup in your game. Google’s system-tracing guidance likewise says IL2CPP provides better execution performance for C# scripts, but it does not give a quantified Android Mono-versus-IL2CPP benchmark.

Choose IL2CPP when

  • Your required Android ABI and Unity version support it, and the build’s startup, compliance, or performance needs align with Unity’s guidance.
  • You can accommodate longer build iterations and have checked any AOT, reflection, or native-interoperability requirements in your project.

Consider Mono when

  • Your target Unity version and Android architecture support Mono and it better fits your development or deployment constraints.
  • You have verified installability and measured the release build on the devices and architectures you actually support.

Do not choose based on APK size alone. The test’s IL2CPP APK was smaller, but size depends on project contents, stripping, ABI selection, and build settings. Unity documents longer IL2CPP builds as a tradeoff; its IL2CPP code-generation options can reduce build time and binary size, potentially at a runtime-performance cost.

How to compare the backends fairly in your project

A useful comparison first establishes whether equivalent builds can be made at all. If Mono cannot target the required architecture, record that as a compatibility constraint rather than describing the result as a speed win for either backend.

  1. Confirm backend and ABI support. Check the documentation for your exact Unity version, select the intended Android architectures, then inspect the built artifacts to verify their ABIs and confirm they install on the target devices.
  2. Hold build conditions constant. Use the same project revision, Unity version, release configuration, stripping settings, and relevant build options. If the architecture cannot be held constant, say so and do not attribute the difference solely to the backend.
  3. Measure runtime behavior on compatible devices. Use the same workload and warm-up policy, and repeat runs. Record whether installation succeeds, startup-to-first-frame, managed workload time, and frame-time distribution. Compare results on the same device and ABI.
  4. Measure production costs separately. Record build duration and delivered artifact size under the same conditions. If testing a code-generation option, treat it as a distinct configuration because build and binary-size changes may come with a runtime-performance tradeoff.

What to check for AOT and stripping issues

Because IL2CPP converts managed assemblies ahead of time and strips unused code, code reached only through reflection or other dynamic access may need explicit preservation configuration. Investigate generic/AOT behavior and native interop where your project uses them; test the release build, not just an editor run. Unity’s IL2CPP documentation explains backend-specific considerations.
