The exact routes, firewall rules, forwarding, DNS, and router settings depend on whether you want access to your home network or want the remote device’s internet traffic to pass through home.
Choose an installation path for your home server
Install WireGuard using the instructions for the server’s operating system rather than copying a command for a different distribution. The WireGuard installation page lists platform-specific options and is the place to check current package guidance; package availability and versions can change.

- Ubuntu:
sudo apt install wireguard - Debian:
apt install wireguard - Fedora:
sudo dnf install wireguard-tools - OpenWRT:
opkg install wireguard
These are examples, not universal commands: confirm the current instructions and package state for your host. Installing WireGuard tools does not by itself establish that a particular router model or firmware build supports a given configuration.

Decide what traffic the tunnel should carry
Before writing peer configuration, decide whether the remote device should reach only selected home-network addresses (a split tunnel) or route all of its internet traffic through the home server. This choice affects allowed IP ranges and the routes, forwarding, firewall, and possibly DNS configuration you need. The official Quick Start demonstrates WireGuard’s interface and peer mechanics, but it is not a complete recipe for every home-network topology.

- Home-network access: plan which home LAN addresses the remote peer needs to reach and configure routes and firewall rules accordingly.
- All traffic through home: plan for the server to forward traffic and for the network to handle the client’s internet-bound packets; DNS and firewall behavior also need to match this design.
Also determine whether the server can be reached from outside the home network or sits behind a router or firewall that affects inbound connections. The right endpoint and router configuration depend on that environment; there is no single router setting established for every home setup.
Create the interface and protect its keys
WireGuard configuration centers on an interface, its private key and address, and peer entries containing public keys, allowed IP ranges, and—where appropriate—a listen port and endpoint. The WireGuard Quick Start shows the basic Linux interface workflow:
ip link add dev wg0 type wireguard
ip address add <server-tunnel-address> dev wg0
Replace the illustrative address with an address plan appropriate for your network. These commands create and address an interface; they do not constitute a finished server configuration. On non-Linux platforms using the userspace implementation, the documentation says wireguard-go wg0 can substitute for the Linux interface-creation command.

The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
Generate a key pair on the machine where the private key will be used:
umask 077
wg genkey > privatekey
wg pubkey < privatekey > publickey
The restrictive umask helps prevent the newly created private-key file from being readable by other users. Keep the private key secret and share only the corresponding public key with the peer configuration that needs it. Treat every device as a separate peer with its own key pair.
Configure the server and remote peer
Add the server’s private key to its interface configuration and each peer’s public key to the opposite side’s peer entry. Set allowed IP ranges to match the traffic you intend to send through the tunnel. A peer that connects from outside the home will generally need an endpoint identifying how to reach the server; the appropriate address and port depend on your network and how inbound traffic is exposed.

Make the server’s listen port, firewall policy, and any router forwarding agree. If the server is behind NAT, the router or upstream network may need to pass inbound WireGuard traffic to it. The official setup guidance does not specify universal router steps, so use the instructions for your router and account for any ISP or firewall restrictions.

For a Linux configuration, the Quick Start shows loading a configuration with wg setconf and enabling the interface with ip link set up dev wg0. The helper wg-quick can automate routine interface bring-up and tear-down. Choose the approach supported by your host and distribution; persistent startup, IP forwarding, firewall rules, address allocation, DNS, and routes must be configured for your chosen topology rather than assumed to be automatic.
Bring the tunnel up and check its state
- Load the configuration. Use the configuration method appropriate to your host; the Quick Start demonstrates
wg setconffor applying settings to an interface. - Activate the interface. On Linux, the documented example is
ip link set up dev wg0. If usingwg-quick, use the interface’s normal helper-based bring-up and tear-down workflow. - Inspect WireGuard. Run
wg showto view current interface and peer state. - Test the intended access. From the remote peer, check the home addresses or internet route you meant to expose. If the interface is up but the expected traffic does not pass, examine allowed IP ranges, routes, forwarding, firewall policy, DNS, and inbound reachability as applicable.
For an always-available home server, configure startup persistence using the mechanism for your distribution or service manager. The cited Quick Start examples do not define a universal persistence method.

Use PersistentKeepalive only when NAT requires it
WireGuard is intentionally quiet while idle. If a peer is behind NAT or a stateful firewall and needs to remain reachable for incoming packets after traffic has been silent, a persistent keepalive can maintain the relevant mapping. WireGuard’s Quick Start says, “A sensible interval that works with a wide variety of firewalls is 25 seconds.” That is a suggested interval for cases where keepalives are needed, not a universal requirement; the setting is off by default, and unnecessary keepalives should not be enabled.
Common deployment snags
- The package command fails: verify the operating system and consult its current package instructions; similarly named commands are not interchangeable across distributions.
- The interface exists, but the peer cannot reach the server: check the endpoint, listen port, and whether the home router or firewall permits inbound traffic to the server.
- The handshake works, but home devices or internet destinations are unreachable: check allowed IP ranges, routes, forwarding, firewall rules, and DNS against the traffic design you chose.
- A peer behind NAT stops receiving traffic after inactivity: consider PersistentKeepalive on that peer if continued inbound reachability is required, rather than enabling it indiscriminately.
WireGuard’s official project documentation and installation page are the appropriate references for current platform support and commands. Configuration details remain dependent on the host OS and home network.
