UniServer Reload is an independent community fork of The Uniform Server, the portable Windows WAMP stack. Its creator, Rob de Roy, says he started it to keep that low-ceremony local development workflow alive while updating PHP and repairing a virtual-host setup problem. The details below describe the project as de Roy presented it in an article published August 29, 2026; check the project’s GitHub releases for current downloads and bundled versions.
What is UniServer Reload?
Uniform Server combines Apache, MySQL, PHP, and phpMyAdmin in a portable package for running a local web server on Windows. The appeal, as de Roy describes it, is straightforward: unpack the software, click Start, and work locally without a conventional installer, registry changes, or extra services.

UniServer Reload is a software project, not a physical product. De Roy describes it as an independent, open-source community fork under a BSD license, built on the original team’s work and crediting that team. A fork continues a project separately, allowing its maintainer to make changes without claiming to be the original project.
Why fork Uniform Server?
De Roy says he wanted to preserve Uniform Server’s portable Windows workflow while addressing maintenance and setup issues. In his account, the original project had not been updated since November 2023 and its PHP support had stopped at PHP 8.3. He also says it was still receiving nearly a hundred downloads a day, but provides no measurement method or independent verification for that figure, so it should be read as his estimate rather than an established statistic.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The fork’s aim is not to replace the original for every user. It is to offer another path for developers who value the portable stack and want newer bundled PHP versions or the particular fixes de Roy describes.
What changes does the fork claim?
Multiple PHP versions
In his August 2026 article, de Roy says UniServer Reload includes PHP 8.3, 8.4, and 8.5, selectable through the controller. He says the PHP binaries come from official Windows builds and are packaged by continuous integration. These are claims about the versions and build process described at that time, not a guarantee about the current download; confirm the release notes before relying on a specific version.

Development-oriented defaults
De Roy says extensions such as SQLite, cURL, and fileinfo are enabled by default, alongside configuration limits intended for development. The article does not give the exact configuration values, so check the project’s current files or documentation if a particular setting matters to your application.

Virtual-host setup
De Roy attributes the original additional-virtual-host problem to a controller that asked a helper to update the Windows hosts file, even though that helper was designed for interactive use and lacked a command-line interface. He says UniServer Reload instead writes hosts-file entries directly, deduplicates and verifies them, and reports errors.

This is the author’s explanation of the defect and his implementation, not an independent diagnosis or test. Because hosts-file edits affect local name resolution, verify the resulting entry and any permissions prompt on your own Windows system when configuring a virtual host.
HTTPS handling
De Roy also says the controller generates a localhost certificate on first start and offers to trust it in Windows. His article notes that Firefox uses separate certificate-store behavior and says virtual hosts created by the project receive HTTPS coverage. The details can depend on the current build and browser configuration; consult the release documentation if browser trust or local HTTPS is essential to your setup.

How portable is it, and how are releases tested?
The author describes two distribution formats: a self-extracting archive and a plain ZIP. Either can be unpacked in a project directory or on a USB stick, preserving the portable approach rather than requiring a conventional installer. No independent installation test is available here, so confirm the current release’s instructions and Windows requirements before moving an existing setup.

De Roy says the project is developed publicly on GitHub and offers rolling development builds as well as versioned stable releases. He further says the CI process starts Apache with each bundled PHP version and publishes only after successfully serving pages. Those are the maintainer’s descriptions of the workflow, not results from an independent test. For the project’s current release options, see GitHub releases.

Should you stay with Uniform Server or try the fork?
Choose based on the state of the project you actually use, rather than assuming a fork is automatically a better fit. Before switching, compare the current PHP versions and update cadence, compatibility with your applications and existing configuration, virtual-host and HTTPS behavior, release stability, and the maintenance or support activity you need.
- Staying with your existing setup avoids a needless change if it meets your requirements; first check whether its PHP version and configuration remain suitable for your projects.
- Trying UniServer Reload may make sense if its current release provides a needed PHP version or addresses a setup issue you encounter. Test it with a non-critical project before replacing a working environment.
The available account is the fork’s author’s own description, not an independently tested side-by-side comparison. Treat stated features as a reason to inspect the current release, not as proof that every project or Windows configuration will work without adjustment.
