To evaluate a unified security platform, walk one realistic incident through the tools, people, permissions, evidence, and recovery decisions your organization would actually use. Set observable pass criteria first, then follow the incident from its opening signal through post-incident work. This reveals whether the handoffs function in your environment; one exercise does not prove that a platform is secure or establish that it is better than every alternative.
Choose an incident that matters to your organization
Pick a plausible scenario with meaningful consequences, but keep it manageable enough to exercise. CISA’s federal incident-response playbook includes examples such as lateral movement, credential access, exfiltration, multi-user or multi-system network intrusion, and compromised administrator accounts. Choose one that fits your environment and response plan; the exercise need not assume a declared major incident. CISA’s Federal Government Cybersecurity Incident and Vulnerability Response Playbooks describe response phases that may iterate until closure.

Before the exercise, agree on what success will look like. Criteria should be specific to the scenario and your workflow, not a vendor score or a universal benchmark. For example, you might require that alerts reach the assigned workflow, the incident lead can see response-action status, investigators can retrieve necessary evidence, containment is authorized and recorded, and business owners can identify continuity decisions.

1. Start with the first signal
Introduce a realistic alert or report, then ask responders to determine what happened, which assets and accounts may be affected, and what evidence they need next. CISA identifies automated alerts, user reports, and third-party reports as possible incident triggers. Note whether the platform supplies useful context or leaves responders to assemble it from separate systems.

2. Follow alerts and handoffs
Trace endpoint detection and response (EDR) information into the security information and event management (SIEM) system and the incident workflow your organization actually uses, such as security orchestration, automation and response (SOAR), ticketing, or reporting tools. Check that the people coordinating the incident can follow the handoff and work in their established process.
CISA’s CDM technical requirements call for EDR integration with agency SIEM platforms and existing incident-response workflow tools, which may include SOAR and reporting or ticketing systems. Requirement EDR-7-2 states: “The EDR capability shall integrate with existing tools that are identified by the Agency to be part of the Agency’s incident response workflow.” This is a federal technical requirement, not a universal certification or a guarantee that a product will integrate with your particular setup. - RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
- EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
3. Exercise an authorized response
If the scenario and permissions allow, test a policy-approved action such as isolating an endpoint, stopping a process, or quarantining a file. Confirm who can authorize it, whether any approval or automation behavior is clear, and whether the action and its status are visible to the people coordinating the incident. CISA lists these as possible response actions and says they should follow configured agency policy; your organization should use its own policies and safeguards.
4. Retrieve evidence and document closure
Ask investigators to retrieve the relevant alerts, event data, and forensic artifacts. Record the incident timeline, decisions, unresolved questions, recovery state, and follow-up work. CISA’s playbook includes post-incident activities and a checklist for tracking work to completion. The point is not merely to see whether information exists somewhere, but whether the appropriate responders can find and use it in the incident workflow.

- 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
- 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
- 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
- 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
- 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles
Include the people and continuity decisions the incident affects
A tabletop exercise should include security and IT personnel as well as relevant business leaders. CISA’s corporate-leader guidance says: “Cyber incident response plans should include not only your security and IT teams, but also senior business leadership and Board members.” Ask which critical business functions could be affected, who makes continuity decisions, and how the workflow records those decisions. CISA, Shields Up: Guidance for Corporate Leaders and CEOs.
For operational technology (OT) environments, add safety and dependency constraints explicitly. Identify IT/OT interdependencies, and do not assume that isolating an asset is safe without operational review. CISA, the FBI, and the NSA advise identifying interdependencies and testing contingency plans so critical functions can continue during an incident. Joint advisory, published January 11, 2022.

If you are evaluating multiple platforms, run the same scenario and score each against the same observable criteria. Treat “unified” as something to demonstrate through working handoffs and visible response status, not as a label to accept on its own.

- Coverage and context: Can responders connect the opening signal to affected users, endpoints, systems, and relevant evidence?
- Integration and handoffs: Do EDR alerts and response status reach your SIEM and existing workflow tools? Can teams work through their incident-reporting or ticketing process?
- Response control: Can authorized responders perform and verify policy-approved actions? Are approval and automation behaviors clear?
- Evidence and audit trail: Can analysts access the event data and artifacts needed for investigation and post-incident review?
- Operational fit: Can security, IT, business, and—where relevant—OT staff follow the workflow using their real roles, permissions, and coverage arrangements?
- Recovery and continuity: Can the organization make and track recovery decisions while sustaining critical functions?
Score against the criteria you agreed before the test. Record failures and workarounds as well as successful steps: a human handoff, missing permission, or evidence gap may matter even when the platform’s individual components appear capable. CISA provides no universal vendor score in the cited materials, and those sources do not identify a best-performing commercial platform. A one-incident exercise is a practical way to test fit with your workflow, not a substitute for broader security assessment.
