Unicode Bubble Text vs. Bold and Circled Letters: What’s the Difference?

Bubble letters, mathematical bold symbols and bold formatting may look similar, but they encode different things and suit different uses.

“Bubble text” usually means circled Unicode letters such as Ⓐ or ⓐ. Mathematical bold letters such as 𝐀 are different encoded characters intended for mathematical notation, while ordinary bold is formatting applied to regular letters. They may look like alternate fonts, but they represent different things and behave differently in text processing.

What does “bubble text” mean?

“Bubble text” is an informal name, not a formal Unicode block name. It commonly refers to circled letters, including uppercase Ⓐ (U+24B6) and lowercase ⓐ (U+24D0). The Unicode Standard lists uppercase circled Latin letters in the range U+24B6–U+24CF.

Each circled letter is an encoded character combining a letter with an enclosing graphic element. These can work as short markers or labels, such as a circled letter used to identify an item. Unicode gives circled single letters compatibility decompositions that remove the circle.

How are circled letters different from mathematical bold?

Type Example What it encodes Intended context
Circled or “bubble” letter Ⓐ A letter with an enclosing circle A short marker or label
Mathematical bold letter 𝐀 A styled letter in Unicode’s Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols repertoire Mathematical notation, where letter style may carry meaning
Ordinary letter with bold formatting A The ordinary letter A; bold is a presentation style Emphasis or styling in general prose

Mathematical bold is not simply a Unicode way to make ordinary prose look heavier. The Unicode Consortium says mathematical alphabets are meant for mathematics, where the difference between plain and bold letters can be semantic rather than merely stylistic. Its guidance for nonmathematical text is to use standard Latin or Greek letters with markup instead of mathematical alphanumeric symbols. See the Unicode FAQ on ligatures, digraphs and presentation forms and the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols code chart.

Are these just different fonts?

No. A font changes how a character is drawn; it does not necessarily change which character is stored. Circled letters and mathematical bold letters are distinct Unicode characters. Rich-text bold, by contrast, applies a presentation style to the ordinary underlying letter, so a bolded A remains the letter A rather than becoming a mathematical bold A.

Using mathematical Unicode letters to imitate bold styling in plain text is an unintended side effect, not their recommended purpose. For ordinary writing, use regular letters and your app’s bold formatting. For mathematical notation, use mathematical symbols when the distinction is meaningful; for an occasional circled marker, a circled character may fit.

What can happen during normalization?

Compatibility normalization can remove the visual distinction from both kinds of special character. Unicode documents mappings from mathematical alphanumeric symbols to base letters and from circled forms to their un-enclosed letters. If a system applies compatibility processing, a character such as 𝐀 or Ⓐ may therefore be reduced to A. The exact handling depends on the processing performed by the software.

If the special appearance carries meaning in your context, preserve the original characters and check how the text will be handled. The Unicode Consortium describes mathematical compatibility mappings in UTR #25: Unicode Support for Mathematics and circled-letter mappings in Unicode 18.0.0, Chapter 22.

Which form should you use?

  • For ordinary emphasis: Use regular letters with rich-text bold formatting.
  • For a mathematical variable or expression: Use the appropriate mathematical alphabet when boldness or another style is part of the notation.
  • For a compact circled label: Use a circled letter if the enclosing circle is the intended marker, while allowing for compatibility processing that may remove it.

Appearance and support are not guaranteed to be identical in every font or app. The Unicode definitions establish what the characters are for, not how every device will render them.
