Spam is unsolicited or unwanted contact, but not every spam message is a scam. The safest response to an unexpected email, text, or call is to pause, avoid links and requests for information, verify the claim using a contact route you already trust, then block or filter and report it when appropriate.
What counts as spam—and when is it a scam?
In everyday use, spam means unwanted contact. It may be marketing you did not ask for, junk mail, or an attempt to trick you into revealing personal or financial information. The distinction matters: unwanted contact is not automatically fraud, but scammers use email, text messages, calls, social media, and even postal mail to reach people. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes phishing messages as attempts to look legitimate so the recipient will hand over sensitive information. FTC guidance on spam texts and emails

Common lures include fake package-delivery or unpaid-toll notices, bank or account alerts, prize claims, government impersonation, and offers designed to steal money or information. A familiar-looking sender name or local phone number does not prove a message is genuine; caller ID information can be spoofed. FTC guidance on unexpected texts FTC guidance on unwanted calls

What should you do when an unexpected message arrives?
- Pause. Urgency, threats, prizes, or a request to act immediately are reasons to stop and check—not reasons to respond faster.
- Do not click, reply, or disclose information. Avoid links, attachments, passwords, verification codes, and payment details in unexpected messages. The FTC advises, “Don’t click on links in unexpected messages.” FTC: How to Recognize and Report Spam Text Messages
- Verify independently. If the claim might be real, open the organization’s known website yourself or call a number you already trust. Do not rely on a link, number, or reply address supplied in the suspicious message.
- Filter or block. Use your email provider’s junk controls, your phone’s filtering and blocking options, or carrier call-protection features. These controls reduce unwanted contact but can miss scams or block something you wanted.
- Report through the right channel. For unwanted texts, use the phone’s report-junk option or forward the message to 7726 (SPAM). Report suspected fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For unwanted calls without a reported loss, the FTC directs consumers to DoNotCall.gov. FTC guidance on dealing with spam and junk mail
How to handle spam by channel
- Leave your provider’s spam filter enabled and mark messages it misses as spam or junk.
- Unsubscribe when the sender is legitimate and the unsubscribe route is trustworthy. If the email seems suspicious, do not use its embedded links; verify the sender independently first.
- For a claimed bank, retailer, or government agency, visit its known website or call a known number rather than using contact details in the email. Avoid unexpected attachments as well as links.
- Forward unwanted email to your email provider. Report suspected fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. FTC email and spam guidance
Text messages
- Use built-in filtering for unknown senders or blocking options if available. Do not reply to an unexpected text, follow its links, or provide account information.
- Check package, toll, prize, or bank-alert claims directly with the company or agency through a contact route you already know.
- Report junk using your phone’s reporting feature or forward the text to 7726 (SPAM). Report suspected fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. FTC text-message guidance
Calls and robocalls
- Use call-blocking or call-labeling options from your phone or provider. A label is a prediction, not proof, and some scam calls will not be flagged. Caller ID can be spoofed.
- Hang up on suspicious callers. If a call might be legitimate, independently look up the organization’s number and call it yourself.
- The National Do Not Call Registry is intended to reduce sales calls from businesses that follow the rules; it does not stop scammers. Report unwanted calls without a reported loss at DoNotCall.gov. Report losses or useful information about fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. FTC call-blocking guidance
Postal junk mail
For specific kinds of U.S. marketing mail, the FTC points consumers to DMAchoice.org for marketing-mail preferences and OptOutPrescreen.com for prescreened credit and insurance offers. These tools address those categories; they do not stop every piece of mail or prevent postal fraud. FTC guidance on junk mail

Which spam defenses should you use?
Start with the controls already built into your email service, phone, and mobile carrier. If you consider an optional call-blocking app, compare it by what it does and what access it needs—not just by how many calls it claims to stop. The FTC notes that some apps charge fees or request access to your contacts list. Blocking can also interfere with calls you want to receive. FTC guidance on call-blocking tools
- Coverage: Does it address email, texts, calls, or only one channel?
- Action: Does it filter, block, label, or help report messages?
- Compatibility: Does it work with your device and carrier?
- Cost and privacy: Is there a fee, and what personal information or permissions does it request?
No filter, registry, or blocking setting catches everything. Treat controls as a way to reduce interruptions, not as a substitute for checking unexpected requests independently. U.S. FTC reporting routes and guidance may differ from those in other countries.

Why an unexpected text deserves a careful check
The FTC’s April 2025 alert cited a study in which text-message open rates could be as high as 98%; the alert’s returned source material did not identify the original study publisher, so that figure should not be read as an FTC-conducted study or a universal rate. FTC alert on unexpected texts In May 2026, the FTC said more people reported scam contact by text than by any other method during the prior year. That describes FTC reports, not all scam contacts.
