Choose Unexpected Keyboard if you want swipe-accessed extra characters and editing controls in a focused, open-source keyboard. Choose Gboard if you want a broader everyday toolkit, including glide and voice typing, handwriting, multilingual input, GIFs, and Translate. Neither is a proven speed or accuracy winner: the available sources do not include a controlled head-to-head typing test.

Which keyboard suits your priorities?
Pick Unexpected Keyboard for direct access to extra characters
Its defining interaction is swiping toward a key corner for additional characters, rather than relying primarily on a conventional row of menus. That can suit people who routinely enter symbols or work in Termux, but the gestures require practice. The Play Store listing describes it as open source and ad-free; users who prioritize those traits may find its focused approach appealing. See the Unexpected Keyboard listing.

Pick Gboard for a broader feature set
Gboard is the more expansive choice if your routine includes glide typing, voice input, handwriting, multiple languages, emoji or GIF search, or Translate. It also lists familiar personalization options such as themes and one-handed mode. Feature availability can vary by device, Android version, language, and region, so a listing is not a guarantee that every tool works on every phone. See the Gboard listing.
What the privacy disclosures do—and do not—establish
Google Play’s Data safety sections are developer-provided disclosures, not independent technical audits. Google notes that practices may vary with use, region, and age. Read the claims as what each developer reports, rather than proof of every app build’s network behavior.

Gboard’s listing and Google’s controls
Gboard’s Play Store listing says no data is shared with third parties, while also saying it may collect data types including audio and app activity; it says data is encrypted in transit. Google’s Gboard Help documentation describes separate learning and audio-donation settings, rather than claiming that every keystroke is uploaded. Google says, “Federated learning is turned on by default. You can turn it off at any time.” The help page also says users can delete learned words and data on-device. It describes “Personalise for you” as saving audio recordings and transcripts of what a user says and types on the device. Separately, audio donations are optional: if enabled, speech snippets are sent to Google to improve speech recognition, and the help page says donations can be stopped in settings. These are distinct settings and processes.
