Undone never confirms whether Alma is literally traveling through time or experiencing events through a psychological lens. The series, created by Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, deliberately keeps those possibilities in tension rather than revealing a single definitive answer.
What happens to Alma in Undone?
After surviving a near-fatal car accident, Alma begins seeing her dead father, Jacob. He tells her she can move through time and asks her to help uncover the truth about his death. Amazon describes the series as exploring “the elastic nature of reality” through Alma’s changed relationship with time and her search for answers about her father.

That premise sets up the question the show refuses to close: are Alma’s experiences evidence of time travel, or can they be understood another way?
What are the two readings of Alma’s experiences?
A psychological interpretation
The story gives viewers reason to consider whether Alma’s experiences are shaped by trauma and her family history of schizophrenia. This is one possible reading of the character, not a diagnosis the series establishes for her.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A supernatural or science-fiction interpretation
Jacob presents a different explanation: Alma can travel through time, and her experiences connect her to something beyond ordinary reality. The series also places spiritual language in Jacob’s dialogue, including his suggestion that some cultures understand people who hear voices as shamans or wise ones. That is a character’s explanation, not an independently established fact or a general claim about Indigenous cultures.
Both readings remain available because the show does not make one explanation a final, objective answer. What Alma and Jacob say matters, but it is not the same as the series proving what is happening.

Why does the show make reality feel uncertain?
Undone uses rotoscoping: performers are filmed, then their performances are transformed into animation. Amazon’s production feature describes actors working on black-box sets, with teams in Europe and Austin rotoscoping and painting the frames.
That approach does more than give the series a distinctive look. The animated world presents Alma’s everyday life and her extraordinary experiences within the same visual frame, rather than sharply separating a supposedly real world from a clearly marked fantasy. In a TIME interview published September 13, 2019, co-creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg said the team considered what it would mean to present the show as live action, then distinguish “the real world” from a mental-illness or science-fiction element. Rotoscoping helped the creators avoid drawing that boundary too neatly.

Did the creators intend to leave the answer open?
Yes. Discussing the first-season finale with Vanity Fair on October 30, 2019, co-creator Kate Purdy said, “Our intention was for that exact thing to happen. It allows you to question internally…What do I want to be true?” She described the uncertainty in terms of whether Alma needs to believe in something larger to stay connected to her father or is relying on a delusion.
Bob-Waksberg added that Alma sees something at the end that the audience does not. That gap is deliberate: the finale is not a hidden answer waiting to be decoded from a detail the viewer missed. It leaves the audience with the same unresolved choice Alma faces.
