Under the Island is a 2D action-adventure with a 1990s-inspired feel, according to Nintendo’s game description. You play as Nia, a newcomer to Seashell Island, and team up with local girl Avocado to investigate why the island is destined to sink beneath the ocean.

Nintendo describes top-down exploration, puzzles, combat and six regions, with settings including sentient greenhouses, frozen caverns and sawmills. Its listing also mentions unusual enemies, artefacts and abilities, animal companions, a cook-off and lost cats; these are publisher-described features, not independent assessments of how they play.
How the physical release relates to the digital version
The digital game launched on 17 February 2026. Slime King Games’ release-date announcement named Switch, Steam, PS4 and PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series as launch platforms. The PlayStation Store listing covers digital PS4 and PS5 versions and says a purchase entitles the buyer to both. That digital entitlement is not established as a benefit of the physical PS5 edition.

The physical announcement names PS5 and Switch only. Nintendo’s UK digital listing gives a 638.0 MB download, one player, PEGI 7, and Japanese, English, German and Chinese language support; those details describe that regional digital listing, not necessarily every physical package. Nintendo Canada lists Switch 2 compatibility for the digital game, with behavior consistent with Switch, but that does not establish a separate Switch 2 physical edition.
Which version should you choose?
The confirmed choice is between the physical PS5 and Switch editions. Consider the platform you own and the announced price for your region. The announcement does not establish technical differences between the physical versions or what either package includes, so use the retailer’s listing to verify the platform, edition and package details.

Who made the game?
Nintendo identifies Slime King Games as developer and Top Hat Studios as publisher. The physical release announcement names Curveball Games and Top Hat Studios as partners. Slime King Games said in its 2026 release-date announcement that development took “about 7 years,” including five years part-time and around 2.5 years full-time; that is the developer’s account of its timeline.
