Use storefront discovery as a starting point
The Steam curator Hidden Gems & Indies groups recommendations using filters such as action, indie, RPG, roguelite, and strategy. Pick a genre or tag that matches what you want to play, then read individual descriptions rather than assuming every featured game shares the same appeal.

Look for curators who explain their selection
Some discovery projects state how they choose games. Underplayed says it hand-picks Steam games with small audiences and does not accept payment for coverage. overlooked.gg says it buys reviewed games itself and does not accept developer keys or sponsored slots. Those policies can help you understand a curator’s approach; they do not guarantee that you will enjoy a particular recommendation.
What recommendation research says about better discovery
A 2021 University of Alberta ASGAARD Lab presentation proposed a recommendation approach built around consistent, extensive tags and genre labels, matching games to personal preferences, managing expectations, age-based content restrictions, and introducing some less-similar recommendations for variety. Those are practical principles for using any list: search by the experience you want, check the details, and leave room for a recommendation outside your usual genre.
In the presentation’s developer questionnaire, 67.9% of respondents supported the approach studied, 29.6% were neutral, and 2.5% did not support it. The deck reports 1,526 indie developers contacted, 195 responses, and 159 non-empty overall feedback responses.
