ULX is Garry’s Mod’s group-based administration system. Install it together with its required library, ULib, restart the server completely, then use ulx help to discover commands, ulx menu to open the graphical interface, or the !command arguments form in chat. Your group and immunity level determine which commands you can run and which players you can affect.

What ULX does
ULX is an administration addon for Garry’s Mod (GMod). It organizes staff into user groups, assigns command permissions to those groups, and exposes the same administration system through server console commands, player chat commands, and a graphical menu. That combination lets an owner make a persistent permission change in the GUI, while a moderator can perform a one-off action from chat or console.

ULX does not work by itself. The project requires the latest version of ULib, its supporting library. Both components must be present on the server; installing only one produces missing commands, menu errors, or an addon that appears not to load.

Administration addon and command system |
Add both items to the collection or Workshop setup used by your dedicated server. Verify that the server account actually downloads Workshop content; subscribing on a client computer does not install files on a separate server.

Classic addons-directory installation
If you install from downloaded archives instead, extract both addons without adding an extra nesting level. A valid ULX tree includes paths such as:

Do not place the archive itself inside garrysmod/addons; extract the addon folder.

- Stop the dedicated server process.
- Install or update both ULib and ULX.
- Start the server again and wait for it to finish loading.
- Join the server and test from the server console.
A map change is not enough after a new installation. ULX’s project instructions require a full server restart; Lua modules loaded during startup will not reliably appear after only changing the map.
Verify that ULX loaded
Use the server console first
Enter:
ulx helpA command listing or help response confirms that the ULX command handler is available. If the console says the command is unknown, check that both addons are installed on the server and perform another full restart.
Open the administration menu
Run:

bind F6 "ulx menu"Choose a key that is not already used by your gamemode. If the bind works but the menu does not open, test ulx menu directly and inspect the server console for permission or Lua errors.
ULX command syntax and targets
ULX accepts the same command name through different interfaces. The command itself is preceded by ulx in console; chat replaces that prefix with an exclamation mark.

Arguments shown in documentation are descriptive placeholders. Replace <players> with ULX’s accepted target expression, <IP address> with an address, and a braced argument such as {message} with the text you want to send. Do not type the angle brackets or braces unless the command’s own help explicitly requires them.
Understand target scope before executing
Every targetable command has a scope. Depending on the command, the selector may identify one player, several players, everyone, or a group. The executing user’s group and immunity are checked against the target. A command that works on yourself may be rejected when aimed at a higher-immunity administrator.
Use ulx help and the official command reference to confirm the selector syntax for a particular command. Treat broad selectors as irreversible until you have verified them: a command aimed at everyone can affect staff and players simultaneously.

Make someone an administrator
Groups tab in the ULX menu
- Run
ulx menu. - Open the Groups tab.
- Select the destination group.
- Choose a connected player and add that player to the group.
- Test one permitted command with the player, then remove excess access if the result is broader than intended.
This workflow is easiest when you need to inspect existing groups and command access visually. Group membership is a saved administrative setting rather than a one-off moderation action.
Console command
The command-line equivalent documented by ULX is:
ulx adduser <user> <group>Replace <user> with the player identifier accepted by your server and <group> with an existing ULX group. Run it from a console or as an authorized administrator. If the identifier contains spaces or does not resolve, use the Groups tab or the exact target form shown by ulx help.
File-based fallback
ULX also documents data/lib/users.txt as a file-based fallback for user assignments. Use this only when you understand the server’s data layout and have a backup. Editing a live file while the server is running can be overwritten by a later save; stop the server or follow the project’s user-management procedure, then restart and verify the resulting group.
What superadmin means
Superadmin is ULX’s highest user group. According to the project description, superadmins can use all commands, override other users’ immunity, view log messages hidden from lower groups, and grant or revoke command access with userallow and userdeny. Give this role only to people who administer the server itself. A moderator who needs to mute or remove players generally should receive a narrower group instead.
Choosing between console, chat and GUI

These are interfaces to the same permission system, not separate administrator accounts. A command denied in chat will normally also be denied in the menu for the same user and group.

Supplemental ULX Commands module
Timmy’s ULX Commands is an optional module that adds RCON, utility, chat and fun commands. It still requires the latest ULib and ULX. The project documents Workshop installation and a legacy addons/ulx-commands path; after a legacy file install, perform a full server restart just as you would for ULX itself.
The following representative forms are documented by that module. Confirm each command’s permission and target rules with ulx help on your installed version before granting access.

URL-executing, redirect, IP-ban and RCON-like functions should be limited to a tightly controlled group. A fun command can still disrupt a live role-play or sandbox session, so assign those permissions separately from routine moderation.
Why ULX chat commands do not work
The command is unknown
- Check that ULib and ULX are installed on the server, not only on your client.
- Run
ulx helpin the server console. - Fully restart the server; a map change does not load newly installed modules reliably.
- If the command belongs to ULX Commands, install that supplemental module as well.
Chat syntax is rejected
Chat uses an exclamation mark: !command arguments. Do not type the console prefix ulx in front of a chat command. Conversely, console input requires ulx command arguments.
You receive a permission or immunity error
Your group may not have that command, or the target may have equal or higher immunity. Ask a superadmin to review the group in the Groups tab or adjust a specific command with userallow or userdeny. Raising every moderator to superadmin removes the protection rather than fixing the permission design.

The target is not found or the wrong person is selected
Use a target expression supported by your installed ULX version and inspect the command’s help for accepted selectors. Start with one connected player before attempting a multi-target or everyone selector. Names containing spaces, disconnected players and duplicate names are common reasons a selector fails.
The menu will not open
Run ulx menu directly instead of relying on a key bind. Confirm that your account can use the menu, then check the server console for Lua errors. A successful bind cannot compensate for a missing ULX installation or a group without menu access.

- Keep ULib and ULX versions current together; ULX explicitly requires the latest ULib.
- Reserve superadmin for server owners and trusted operators.
- Create narrowly scoped staff groups instead of granting every command.
- Test a new group with a test account and a single target.
- Be especially conservative with URL execution, redirects, IP bans and commands that affect everyone.
- Back up user and group data before editing files or resetting configuration.
- Review logs after granting elevated access, since superadmins can see messages hidden from lower groups.

What is the difference between a ULX group and a one-off command?
A group assignment is a persistent permission decision. A command such as a moderation or fun action is an operation performed against a target and does not, by itself, change the user’s group.
How can I limit a powerful command to one trusted administrator?
