Friends on one home network can join a locally hosted server; players elsewhere need remote network access or a managed server. The host installs the matching server loader, accepts the EULA, places the Pixelmon server file in the server’s mods folder, starts the server, and shares its address.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
The exact files depend on the Pixelmon branch you choose. Confirm the supported Minecraft version, loader, and Java requirement before anyone installs anything, then distribute one identical modpack to the whole group.

What you need before starting
Pixelmon is a Forge-based Minecraft modification, so it runs on the paid PC version of Minecraft Java Edition. The Pixelmon Wiki states that “Only the Java edition can run Forge mods such as Pixelmon.” Bedrock Edition, console editions, mobile editions, and other non-Java versions cannot join this setup.
Decide the exact version set first. A multiplayer group is not compatible merely because everyone has “Pixelmon”; the Minecraft release, mod loader build, Pixelmon release, and any other installed mods must line up with the server.
#1 Best Overall
| Component | Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | Java Edition for PC | Pixelmon uses the Java mod-loader ecosystem. |
| Mod loader | The Forge or NeoForge build required by your selected Pixelmon branch | The client and server must use the same loader family and compatible build. |
| Pixelmon | One exact release on every client and the server | A different Pixelmon release can trigger a “Mod Rejection” error. |
| Java | The Java version documented for that branch | Older 1.12.2-era releases use Java 8; newer branches require newer Java versions. |
| Memory | At least 2 GB available or assignable to each client | This is the minimum stated in the official installation guidance; demanding modpacks may need more. |
Write the chosen versions down before sending instructions to friends. Mixing a current client with an older server, or copying only the Pixelmon file while leaving different loader builds installed, creates avoidable connection failures.
Choose the right way to host the game
There are three practical arrangements. Pick based on where your friends are, how much administration you want, and whether the world must remain available when your computer is off.
| Approach | Who can connect | Setup and control | Cost and maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local server | People on the host’s local network, such as the same home network | You install and control the server files and configuration. | No separate hosting bill, but the host supplies the computer, memory, and local bandwidth. |
| Self-hosted over the internet | Friends outside the home network after remote access is configured | Maximum file and configuration control; you are responsible for network and firewall configuration. | No hosting subscription, but troubleshooting connectivity and keeping the server online are your responsibility. |
| Managed Minecraft/Pixelmon hosting | Friends connecting over the internet through the host’s address | The provider supplies a managed machine and control panel; you still need a matching modpack. | Recurring fee, in exchange for simpler remote access and less hardware administration. The official guide strongly recommends paid hosting for bigger servers because performance, stability, and safety matter more at that scale. |
When local hosting is the best choice
Use a local server for a household or a small group sitting on the same network. It is the shortest path from installation to play because the players do not need an internet-facing address. The world is available only while the host’s server process and computer are running.
When remote access or hosting is necessary
If even one friend is outside the host’s local network, local-only access is not enough. Configure remote access according to the host network’s requirements, or select a managed Minecraft/Pixelmon server. For a larger group, the official server guide favors paid hosting rather than relying on a home computer, because consistent performance, uptime, and safety become increasingly important.
Install the same Pixelmon client on every computer
Have one person choose the branch and prepare the instructions. Everyone else should reproduce that exact installation rather than selecting a “latest” button independently.
- Install Minecraft Java Edition. Sign in with the account that owns the PC Java Edition and launch the vanilla game once so the launcher creates its normal files.
- Choose a supported Pixelmon release. Check the Pixelmon installation guide and the release listing for the Minecraft version and loader supported by that release. Record the complete combination, such as the Minecraft version, Forge or NeoForge build, and Pixelmon version.
- Install the required loader. Use the installer or supported launcher profile for the selected Forge or NeoForge branch. Do not substitute a loader from another Minecraft version.
- Install Pixelmon. Add the Pixelmon file through the launcher or place it in the client’s
modsfolder as instructed for that branch. Keep the file intact; do not extract a mod JAR. - Match additional mods. If the server uses performance, map, or utility mods, give each player the same files and versions. A “mostly identical” folder is not sufficient for a strict modded server.
- Allocate memory. The official installation guide calls for at least 2 GB of available or assignable RAM on the client. Leave enough memory for the operating system and launcher rather than assigning all physical RAM to Minecraft.
- Launch once before joining. Start the selected profile and reach the title screen. Close it, correct any loader or Java error, and only then distribute the profile to friends.
For a group, a prepared modpack or a copied, verified instance is safer than asking each person to download files separately. Keep a copy of the working files so a replacement computer can be brought to the same state.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Create the Pixelmon server
The server must use the server-side loader and Pixelmon release that correspond to the clients. Perform the initial setup on the computer that will host the world or on the managed host’s file panel.
- Install the server loader. Download the Forge or NeoForge build required by the chosen Pixelmon branch and run its installer. Select Install Server and choose an empty server directory.
- Start the server once. Run the generated server launcher. The first run creates the configuration files and stops or refuses to continue until the EULA is addressed.
- Review the EULA. Open the generated
eula.txt. Changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you agree to the Minecraft EULA. Save the file. - Stop before adding mods. End the server process cleanly. Adding files while it is still writing world data can leave an incomplete setup.
- Add Pixelmon. Place the Pixelmon server JAR in the server root’s
modsfolder. Do not extract the JAR. Put any other server-required mods in the same folder, using the exact versions represented on the clients. - Start the server again. Watch the console for loader and Pixelmon startup messages. The first successful launch may take longer while the world and configuration files are generated.
- Set memory deliberately. The official server guide recommends at least 3 GB of allocated server memory. Actual needs depend on player count and the other installed mods, so monitor whether the process is forced to close or the game becomes unresponsive rather than assuming the minimum is a guarantee.
- Stop and restart for structural changes. Back up the world before major configuration or mod changes. Never remove or replace a mod while players are connected.
After Pixelmon has started, its main configuration is available at config/pixelmon.hocon. Change only settings you understand, keep a backup of the original file, and restart when a setting does not support live reload.
Configure Pixelmon and share the address
Reloadable settings
Some Pixelmon settings can be re-read with /pokereload. The command does not apply every option: changes that affect world generation, startup-only systems, or the loader may require a complete server restart. If a value appears unchanged after the command, stop the server, save a backup, and restart it.

- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
Joining on the same network
- Keep the server running and confirm that the host and players are connected to the same local network.
- Give friends the server address shown by the host’s Minecraft server setup. They should open Minecraft Java Edition, choose Multiplayer, add or select the server, and connect.
- If the server does not appear automatically, have the host provide the address directly rather than relying on a LAN discovery list.
Local hosting generally accepts connections only from the host’s local network. A friend on a different home or mobile network needs remote access or a managed server instead.
Joining from outside the home network
For an internet connection, the host must make the server reachable through the network configuration and firewall used by that location, then share the externally reachable server address. The exact steps vary by router, internet provider, and operating system, so do not reuse instructions for a different network without checking its requirements. A managed host avoids most home-router administration: give friends the address supplied by that service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep every version identical
The Pixelmon server guide states: “Players connecting to a server must use the same version of Pixelmon that the server is using.” In practice, treat the following as one inseparable version set:
Best Value
- Minecraft version
- Forge or NeoForge loader version
- Pixelmon release
- Every additional client/server mod and its version
- Java version required by that branch
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| “Mod Rejection” when joining | The client’s Pixelmon, Minecraft, loader, or another mod does not match the server. | Compare the complete version set and replace the outlier with the server’s exact files. |
| Loader fails before the title screen | Wrong Java version, wrong loader branch, or a damaged/incompatible mod file. | Check the branch’s Java requirement, reinstall its loader, and test with the intended mod files only. |
| Server starts but Pixelmon is absent | The JAR is in the wrong directory, was extracted, or is not the release built for that loader. | Stop the server, place the intact Pixelmon JAR in the server root’s mods folder, and restart. |
| Friends cannot connect remotely | The server is local-only, the shared address is wrong, or the network/firewall does not permit remote access. | Verify the server is running, confirm the correct externally reachable address, and use managed hosting if the network cannot provide remote access. |
| Crashes or severe lag after adding players | Memory or hardware is insufficient for the player count and installed mods. | Reduce unnecessary mods or player load, allocate appropriate memory, and consider paid hosting for a larger group. |
Current Pixelmon release and Java notes
Pixelmon changes its supported Minecraft and loader versions over time. CurseForge currently lists Pixelmon 9.4.1 for Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge, released September 16, 2026. That listing is a point-in-time release reference, not a promise that every branch or launcher supports it. Older Pixelmon branches target earlier Minecraft releases, and their installation steps and Java requirements differ.
Before downloading, verify the release page and the official Pixelmon installation and server guides for the branch you intend to use. If you deliberately choose a 1.12.2-era server, plan for Java 8; newer branches document newer Java requirements. Never “fix” a launch error by changing Java at random while leaving the loader and Minecraft versions unverified.
Practical operating checklist
- Write down one Minecraft, loader, Pixelmon, Java, and additional-mod version set.
- Give every player the same launcher profile or modpack.
- Keep client memory at or above the official 2 GB minimum and reserve at least 3 GB for the server as a starting point.
- Back up the world before changing
pixelmon.hocon, replacing mods, or upgrading the branch. - Use
/pokereloadonly for settings that support reloads; restart for everything else. - Share the local address only with people on the same network; use a remotely reachable address for everyone else.
- For a large or always-on community, favor managed hosting when home hardware, bandwidth, uptime, or safety become limiting.
Bottom line
The reliable formula is simple: Minecraft Java Edition, one precisely matched mod set, a server running the corresponding Forge or NeoForge and Pixelmon files, and an address reachable by every player. Local hosting is easiest for friends in one home network. Remote access or managed hosting is the practical choice for separated or larger groups. When a connection fails, compare versions first; the “Mod Rejection” message usually means the client and server are not using the same files.
