Ultra Street Fighter IV players on Steam now have community-made rollback netcode options, but the two projects are no longer equally active: SF4Enhanced says development ended on 4 October 2026 and points players to SF4 Ember Netplay. Both are unofficial modifications—not Capcom updates—and neither can guarantee a stable match on every connection. The repository credits Anthropic’s Claude among contributors, but that does not mean either mod was made by Claude alone.
What changed for Ultra Street Fighter IV online play?
Two prominent community projects set out to modernize online play for the Steam edition of Ultra Street Fighter IV: SF4Enhanced, associated with Faabi and built on earlier sf4e work by Anthony Danducci, and SF4 Ember Netplay, associated with Kabiefox. They add rollback netcode and online-room features to the existing PC game; they are not official Capcom updates, and the project instructions discussed here target Steam rather than console editions.

The current status changes the practical choice. SF4Enhanced’s repository says it stopped development on 4 October 2026, names version 1.2.1 as its final build, and calls Ember the community standard. It says its public lobby servers remain online for existing users, but does not promise how long they will stay available. For someone choosing a project now, SF4Enhanced itself points toward Ember.

SF4Enhanced credits the upstream sf4e project for reverse-engineered engine API work, save states, GGPO integration, the session protocol, launcher, and overlay. Its repository also credits Ember with working out much of the online-play analysis and fixes that were later ported into SF4Enhanced.

How do SF4Enhanced and Ember differ?
| Area | SF4Enhanced | SF4 Ember Netplay v0.9.9 |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Development stopped 4 October 2026; 1.2.1 is the final build, according to the project repository. | Release v0.9.9 was published 27 September 2026; its release notes describe it as experimental unofficial netplay. |
| Game and system requirements | Steam edition of Ultra Street Fighter IV; both players need the same build. The cited instructions do not state an operating-system minimum. | Steam edition, Windows 10 or later, x64, and Microsoft Visual C++ x86 runtime. The release notes also describe limitations and manual update steps for Linux under Proton or Wine. |
| Online features | Rollback netcode, adjustable input delay, lobby codes, spectators, peer-to-peer connections with automatic server-relay fallback, and server selection. | Private room invitations, spectators, and the ability to leave and rejoin a room. Everyone in a room, spectators included, must use the same build. |
| Connection and interruption details | Project release documentation lists relay servers in Spain and Germany. Users elsewhere may see higher ping through a relay; direct connectivity may avoid that route when available. | The v0.9.9 notes say a short connection interruption can pause a fight for up to eight seconds before it resumes or ends. |
These details are tied to the cited releases and repository status, not a promise that every feature or instruction applies unchanged to every older build. SF4Enhanced’s setup guidance has changed across versions; its current online-play instructions specify Fixed frame pacing on both PCs. Check the instructions for the build being used rather than copying a setting from older release notes.
What do players need to install and play?
Both projects modify the Steam version of Ultra Street Fighter IV, so players need the underlying game. Participants must coordinate on a compatible mod build: SF4Enhanced requires both players to use the same build, while Ember’s v0.9.9 notes require every room participant, including spectators, to match versions.
Rank #2
For SF4Enhanced
Its release documentation describes lobby codes, spectators, adjustable input delay, server selection, and direct peer-to-peer connections with relay fallback. The project lists relay locations in Spain and Germany, which can matter to players far from those regions if their match uses a relay. The repository’s current instructions call for Fixed frame pacing on each PC; older instructions may differ.
For Ember Netplay v0.9.9
The release notes list Windows 10 or later on x64, the Steam game, and the Microsoft Visual C++ x86 runtime as requirements. Linux users running through Proton or Wine should note that the release notes describe limitations, including manual update steps. Rooms support private invitations, spectators, and leaving and rejoining.
Rank #3
- New Playable Characters: Four new challengers enter the ring: Yun, Yang, Oni and Evil Ryu.
- Updated Character Balancing: Features all new character balancing, further refining gameplay.
- Updated Replay Channel: Replay Follower, My Channel Advanced, and Elite Channel
- All playable SSFIV characters will be unlocked out of the box, including Yun & Yang, Oni, and Evil Ryu.
Does rollback make every match lag-free?
No. Rollback netcode can help keep a match responsive when players’ game states need to be reconciled over a network, but it cannot remove the effects of distance, latency, an unstable connection, or a desynchronization bug. Relay routing can add ping, and direct connectivity is not always available. Ember’s release notes document fixes alongside continued development, while SF4Enhanced’s own documentation notes relay-region caveats.
Reports from players have been mixed. Time Extension relayed positive reactions, including pro player Chris Tatarian saying he was “blown away” and former tournament organizer OmegaTomHanks calling the mods “incredible.” Other players described lag as worse than the native game. Those reactions are anecdotes, not controlled comparisons, so they do not establish that either mod will improve every player’s experience.

- Six new battle environments
What does the published test evidence show?
SF4Enhanced’s 2026 release notes report a round-transition test: 19,356 frames were checked before a fix and 17,106 after; the project reports 112 divergences before the fix and zero after. It says all 112 earlier divergences happened at round resets and that the fix was confirmed across two machines on a real connection. These are developer-reported results, not an independent benchmark or a test of every character, connection, or match condition.

Time Extension reported that GitHub listed Anthropic’s Claude among contributors to both projects. That supports saying Claude received contributor credit in the repositories; it does not establish that Claude independently created either mod, or that the developers used no other tools or expertise. SF4Enhanced’s own credits also identify upstream sf4e contributions and work shared or ported between the two projects.
Best Value
- All playable Street Fighter IV characters are unlocked right out of the box, and traditional "2D" Street Fighter six-button gameplay.
- Enhanced online play featuring new modes: Team Battles, Endless Battle and Replay Channel.
- More classic Street Fighter characters re-imagined for a new generation of gamers, including favorites DeeJay, T Hawk, Guy, Cody and Adon.
- Utilize the Tae Kwon Do style for the first time with the new challenger, the mysterious female fighter Juri.
- The return of the classic car and barrel bonus stages made popular in Street Fighter II. (available in both arcade and challenge modes)
Which rollback mod should players look at now?
For a new player deciding between these two, SF4Enhanced’s repository directs them to Ember rather than presenting both as equally active choices. Ember is still labeled experimental in its v0.9.9 release notes, so prospective players should check its current release information and setup requirements before joining a room. Existing SF4Enhanced users may still find its public lobbies online, but the project gives no availability guarantee.
Before starting a session, confirm that everyone has the same build and follows that build’s current setup guidance. These are unofficial community modifications for the Steam game, and their features, compatibility, and server availability can change with releases.
