What is delivery-versus-payment (DvP)?
Delivery-versus-payment links the exchange of an asset with the transfer of its payment. In an atomic arrangement, both legs complete together or neither completes. That structure is intended to reduce principal exposure: the risk of one party delivering value without receiving the other leg.

For example, a tokenized bond could be exchanged for a payment token such as USDC. The Solana Foundation’s earlier educational guide uses that kind of example to explain atomic settlement; it describes a separate delegation-oriented reference implementation, not the newly announced Solana DvP program.
How does Solana DvP work?
The new program is described by the Foundation as an escrow program with an API for DvP settlement on Solana. Its stated design provides isolated escrow and enforces deadlines, offering a shared alternative to institutions building bespoke smart contracts for on-chain trades.

Solana’s developer guide describes a flow in which participants create a trade record, fund their respective escrow legs, and then settle or use recovery actions. Creating a trade records its terms and creates two escrow accounts, but does not move tokens; each party funds its own leg afterward.
- The Foundation says the program supports SPL Token and Token-2022, including extensions such as permanent delegate, pausable tokens, and transfer hooks.
- According to the Foundation, counterparties can use a settlement agent, such as a bank, custodian, or exchange.
- The program’s on-chain clock can differ from wall-clock time by tens of seconds and can jump forward, according to the developer guide. The guide advises allowing a margin around expiry rather than treating it as a second-precise deadline.
- The guide says expiry may be set no more than one year after trade creation. Reclaim, cancel, and reject actions become available after expiry.
Does Solana DvP settle in seconds?
The Solana Foundation says the program aims for finality “in seconds instead of days.” The Foundation also characterizes traditional settlement processes as tying up capital for one to two days. Those figures are the Foundation’s framing of the intended benefit, not an independently validated comparison: its launch announcement does not provide a benchmark, transaction data, sample size, or measurement method.

The distinction matters because “settlement” can refer to different milestones, and a fair time comparison depends on comparable transaction types and a consistent definition of completion. The available launch information does not establish a measured settlement speed or cost for Solana DvP.
Did J.P. Morgan build Solana DvP?
No. The Foundation says J.P. Morgan contributed input on institutional settlement practices and requirements. It explicitly says that contribution should not be taken as J.P. Morgan designing, developing, operating, approving, certifying, warranting, endorsing, or guaranteeing the program or its performance.

J.P. Morgan’s Rhodel D’souza, Head of Markets Digital Assets, said: “A shared, open standard for atomic delivery-versus-payment is exactly the kind of foundational infrastructure institutional market participants require to operate at scale without introducing settlement risk and counterparty exposure. We were pleased to contribute our settlement expertise.” The quotation describes the bank representative’s view and contribution; it does not establish that the bank is a customer or endorses the product.
Is Solana DvP live for production?
The Foundation says the program has undergone external security audits and is ready for use with real funds. Its October 6 announcement does not name the auditor or link audit reports. At the same time, it invites design partners and early participants ahead of production release. These statements indicate the Foundation’s readiness claim and recruitment stage; they do not establish broad production deployment or adoption by named users.

The Foundation says privacy features for confidential trade settlement are planned. That is a roadmap statement, not a capability established in the launch materials.

Because this is version-sensitive implementation guidance, check the current developer documentation before relying on it.

How does the approach compare with existing settlement models?

An atomic rail changes how the two transfer legs are coordinated; it does not by itself establish the legal status of a tokenized asset, eliminate every operational or smart-contract risk, or demonstrate that institutions have adopted the program. The Foundation’s announcement says its material is informational, not legal, tax, or investment advice, and that regulators have not approved or endorsed the matters described.
