A TV is usually the better choice for a bright or mixed-light room and straightforward everyday viewing. An ultra-short-throw (UST) projector makes more sense if you want a much larger image, can control room light, and are willing to plan the screen, furniture and alignment. Neither display type wins in every room: compare the actual space and the complete setup, not just the screen technology.
Start with the room’s light
Ambient light is one of the biggest differences in daily use. A TV is generally more dependable when windows or room lighting stay bright. Light falling on a projected image can reduce its perceived contrast, so a UST projector is easiest to enjoy when you can dim lights or draw curtains.

Curtains or blinds can improve projection conditions, but they also mean giving up some daylight while watching. An ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screen designed for UST can improve the picture in a lit room; it does not remove the projector’s sensitivity to room light, and it adds to the setup cost. LG’s regional comparison guide discusses these trade-offs, while TechRadar’s category guide covers screen choice and room conditions: LG’s projector-versus-TV guide and TechRadar’s UST projector guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDecide how large an image you actually need
A very large image is the clearest reason to consider UST. These projectors can create a 100-inch image or larger while sitting close to the projection surface. Large TVs are also available: What Hi-Fi?’s June 2024 comparison noted that 85-inch TVs were common and some models reached 98 inches at that time. That is dated market context, not a current upper limit; check what is available where you live before deciding that a projector is the only way to get the size you want.

- 10 in. Ultra Short Throw Distance
- Integrated Dolby Audio
- Triple Laser RGB Technology
Compare the target diagonal with your seating distance. If a large TV meets your needs, it may be the simpler choice. If you want an image larger than the TV options you are considering, UST has a stronger case. The projector’s image size, however, depends on the particular model and its placement rather than on the UST label alone.
Understand what “ultra-short-throw” placement requires
UST describes a projector category, not a promise that every unit can sit anywhere near the wall. Christie defines UST projectors as having a 0.25–0.5:1 throw ratio and says they can sit as close as 1 foot (0.3 m) from the projection surface. Those are category-level figures, not installation instructions for a specific home model. The required distance, image size and console height vary by product. See Christie’s UST explanation.

Before buying, check the manufacturer’s placement guidance against the furniture and wall you plan to use. A UST image can be sensitive to small changes in the projector’s position, so height, distance and alignment matter. A TV also needs suitable support or mounting, but it does not require aligning a projected image to the screen.
Treat the screen as part of the projector system
A smooth, neutral wall can be a reasonable starting surface in a room where light is controlled. A dedicated screen can affect brightness, contrast, color and visible detail. For rooms with ambient light, a UST-specific ALR screen is designed for light arriving from the projector below; it is not interchangeable with the assumption that any screen marketed for projection will suit a UST’s optical geometry.

Compare the complete setup, not just the display price
There is no universal cost winner established by a like-for-like comparison. A fair comparison is between a particular TV and a complete projector setup, including any screen and room changes you would actually need.

- UST setup: projector, suitable screen if needed, console or other furniture, light control, and any audio or streaming device required.
- TV setup: television, stand or mount, and any audio or streaming device required.
- For either option: check what is included in the exact model and what must be bought separately; prices and availability vary by region and change over time.
For example, LG Canada lists its CineBeam S PU615U as a mini 4K UST projector with 500 ANSI lumens, a maximum 100-inch image and a stated throw range of 8.1–39.3 cm. Those are specifications for that model on the Canadian product page, not a guarantee of perceived brightness in any room. LG Canada’s PU615U specifications are useful as a model-specific example, not a general benchmark for UST projectors.
Check brightness claims in context
Published lumens are specifications, not a controlled comparison of how bright two displays will look from your seat. Room light, screen choice and the specific products all affect the result. TechRadar reports the Epson EpiQVision Ultra LS800 with a 4,000-lumen specification and an image size up to 150 inches; those figures describe reported product specifications, not independent room measurements or TV-equivalent performance. See TechRadar’s UST guide for that model context.

If picture quality is a priority, compare candidate devices under conditions as close as possible to your own room and viewing habits. Consider perceived brightness and contrast, HDR behavior, color, motion and reflections rather than using a single published number as a verdict.

Think about how you will use the display, not only how large the image can be. Daytime sports, gaming, frequent app use and quick startup may weigh differently from evening movie watching. Check the exact projector’s smart platform and supported apps before buying: TechRadar notes that platforms vary and warns that some Android TV implementations may lack Netflix. A streaming stick may be an option, but confirm compatibility rather than assuming it.
For sound, check whether the projector and any soundbar support a compatible connection such as ARC/eARC or optical audio. TechRadar’s category guide notes that many UST models provide ARC/eARC or optical connections, but the ports and capabilities are model-specific.

TechRadar gives 20,000–25,000 hours as a broad range for laser light-source lifetime specifications; this is not an independently measured lifespan study or a guarantee for a particular projector. Check the manufacturer’s stated source life and warranty for the model you are considering. TechRadar’s UST category guide provides the category-level context.
Use this checklist to choose between actual candidates
- Room light: How bright is the room during your usual viewing hours? Are curtains or blinds acceptable, and can you control overhead lights?
- Image size and seating: What diagonal do you want from your normal seat? Would a TV in the size range you can buy meet that need, or do you want a still-larger image?
- Installation: Does the console have the height and depth the projector requires? Can you position the screen, route power and cables, and tolerate the alignment work?
- Picture priorities: Compare perceived brightness, contrast, HDR, color, motion and reflections in the room where you will watch.
- Everyday features: Check the exact device’s app support, startup and gaming features, plus audio connections if you plan to use a soundbar.
- Total cost: Add the display, screen or mount, furniture, light control, audio and streaming needs for each complete setup.
LG Electronics’ regional guide puts the decision plainly: “The question is never which technology is better in the abstract. It is which one fits the room you actually have.” This is manufacturer guidance, not an independent test. LG’s projector-versus-TV guide.
