The right choice can vary by engine, model year and market; there is no single viscosity that is correct for every car.
Find the manual for your exact vehicle
Start with the manual matching your vehicle’s model year, engine and market. A manual for a similar trim or a different country may list different oil recommendations. If you do not have the booklet, look for the automaker’s official digital owner’s manual. If you cannot confirm the correct manual or engine, ask the automaker or an authorized service source rather than guessing.

Locate the oil viscosity chart
Check the index or specifications section for headings such as “Engine Oil,” “Recommended Lubricants and Capacities,” or “Recommended SAE Viscosity Number.” The chart may separate recommendations by engine, so use the row for your exact engine rather than choosing a grade from a nearby row.

Read the chart for the temperatures you expect
If the manual’s chart relates viscosity to temperature, use the range of temperatures in which you expect to operate the vehicle before the next oil change. Kia’s 2025 owner-manual page advises: “When choosing an oil, consider the range of temperature your vehicle will be operated in before the next oil change.” Follow the chart’s permitted range rather than selecting a grade from general climate advice. Check the oil specification as well as the SAE grade
SAE viscosity describes the oil’s viscosity grade; it does not establish whether the oil meets the performance requirements for your engine. Check for the API, ILSAC, ACEA or automaker-specific specification listed in the manual, and match the product label to both the specified grade and performance requirement. API’s guide identifies ILSAC GF-7A and GF-7B as standards introduced in March 2025. It says GF-7A is for applications where GF-6A is recommended, while GF-7B is for applications where GF-6B is recommended; GF-7B applies only to SAE 0W-16 oils. Compare only the choices the manual allows
If the manual permits more than one oil option, compare them against its instructions rather than ranking them by viscosity or brand preference alone:

- Confirm the option applies to your exact engine and vehicle market.
- Check the SAE grade against any temperature chart.
- Verify the required API, ILSAC, ACEA or automaker performance specification.
- Follow any additional instruction about oil type or service conditions.

Match the label when buying
Choose a product whose label meets the manual’s viscosity grade and performance requirements. The API Certification Mark is one way to identify an oil that meets applicable API/ILSAC requirements; Kia’s manual says an oil displaying the API Certification Mark conforms to ILSAC. Check the manual for any additional automaker specification, since an API or ILSAC mark alone may not cover every requirement for your vehicle. Kia owner manuals
