Choose a large-screen TV for a bright or multipurpose room where reliable daytime viewing and easy operation matter most. Choose an ultra-short-throw (UST) projector if a much larger picture is your priority and you can control the room’s light, placement, and screen setup. A UST projector sits close to the screen, but it is not a drop-in TV replacement: the room and screen still shape the picture.
Which option fits your room?
| Decision | Large-screen TV | UST projector |
|---|---|---|
| Room lighting | Better suited to strong daylight, open-plan rooms, or viewing with lights on. | Best when you can dim the room, especially for evening viewing. |
| Image size | Choose when a TV at your target size fits the budget and available space. | Choose when you want a substantially larger image than a TV can provide for your budget. |
| Everyday operation | Typically the more dependable choice for casual viewing throughout the day. | Requires more attention to screen compatibility, placement, and light. |
| Installation | A stand or conventional TV mount may be simpler. | Needs space close to the screen and a compatible, flat, rigid surface. |
| Picture priorities | Favors consistency and contrast in ambient light. | Favors immersive scale, with results shaped by room conditions. |
These are room-fit trade-offs, not universal performance rankings. Compare the actual room and intended image size rather than relying on advertised lumen figures alone.

Will a UST projector work in a bright living room?
It can produce a viewable image, but daylight and room lighting reduce the projected image’s apparent contrast and color. Light falling on a standard projection screen competes with the projector’s light and can wash out contrast, color saturation, and dynamic range, according to Legrand AV/Da-Lite’s technical guidance.
A correctly matched ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) or ceiling-light-rejecting (CLR) screen can reduce the effect; it cannot make projection immune to daylight or direct light. If the room has strong windows, lights are routinely on, or people watch throughout the day, a TV is generally the more dependable option.

Samsung UK’s undated buying guide, accessed in 2026, suggests 1,500–2,500 lumens for a controllable home-theater environment and 3,000 lumens or more for rooms affected by large windows. These are broad buying recommendations, not universal thresholds or a head-to-head comparison with a particular TV. They should not be directly compared with another product’s rating unless the measurement standards and conditions match. Samsung’s guide is UK-focused.
Do you need a special screen for a UST projector?
Usually, you should plan on a screen designed for UST projection rather than assuming any ALR screen will work. UST models project at a steep angle from very close to the display; that geometry can challenge ALR screen designs. Legrand AV/Da-Lite describes UST as a throw ratio of 0.4:1 or less and explains why UST-specific screen materials are designed for this optical arrangement. Its technical guidance and XGIMI’s manufacturer advice both emphasize matching the screen to UST projection.

- 1+ Billion Colors for Cinema-Grade Visuals: Covers 107% BT.2020 and 147% DCI-P3 for contrast and color accuracy comparable to digital cinemas. With AWOL ALR Daylight screen, enjoy bright, clear images even during the day. Best with 150” screen to replace traditional TVs for an unmatched big-screen experience.
Confirm the exact projector-and-screen compatibility in the projector manual and screen specifications. Look for a flat, rigid surface and follow the model’s placement and alignment instructions. A screen that reduces ambient-light effects is a mitigation, not a guarantee of TV-like performance in a bright room.

How much placement and alignment does a UST need?
Close placement does not remove setup constraints. The projector must be aligned for the intended screen size and compatible screen geometry; small changes in position can affect the image. Check the specific model’s throw ratio, image-size range, and placement guidance before deciding where it will sit.

Epson says its LS800 was designed to be placed below and centered with the Epson SilverFlex Ultra ALR Screen or third-party ALR screens. Epson also describes 100-inch and 120-inch SilverFlex Ultra ALR options for that model. Those are LS800-specific manufacturer details, not standard dimensions or placement rules for all UST projectors. Epson’s LS800 product-development Q&A gives the model-specific guidance.
How should you compare brightness claims?
Do not use a single advertised lumen number to declare a projector better than a TV, or to predict how it will look in your room. Ratings can use different methods, and the screen, ambient light, image size, and setup affect what viewers see.

- Epson lists the LS800 at 4,000 lumens of color brightness (IDMS-rated) and 4,000 lumens of white brightness (ISO-rated). These are manufacturer specifications for that model, not independent measurements or category-wide values. Epson’s LS800 product page provides the specifications.
- Samsung UK’s figures are broad recommendations for room conditions, not a controlled comparison with the LS800 or with a TV.
The available figures do not establish a controlled, like-for-like head-to-head result across equivalent image size, lighting, and price. Compare the exact models’ specifications and measurement standards, then consider how your room will affect the image.

Choose based on the compromise you will notice most. A TV is the safer everyday choice if the room is bright, serves several purposes, or needs to work well without changing the lighting. A UST projector is compelling when a much larger image is the main goal and you are willing to manage placement, screen choice, and room light.

Include the screen and its installation in the projector setup decision, not just the projector itself. Screen size, rigidity, and compatibility matter, and a projected image’s result depends on the room as well as the device. A TV-versus-projector cost comparison also depends on the target size and local market; examples in LG’s comparison guide are focused on the UAE and should not be generalized to other regions.
