The centre brings together three Fraunhofer institutes to develop battery and hydrogen technologies, including solid-state batteries and POWERPASTE, with a focus on taking research toward industrial application.
What is Fraunhofer ZESS?
ZESS is a Fraunhofer centre for research, development, prototyping and scaling in energy-storage systems. Its new building is in Braunschweig, Germany, at Braunschweig Research Airport. The centre is supported by the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films (IST), the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (IFAM), and the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS), working closely with the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Battery LabFactory Braunschweig (BLB).

The collaboration combines expertise in materials science, production engineering and system integration. Fraunhofer says its work follows the process chain from new materials and production technologies to sustainability and circularity. Its stated goal is to develop technologies for industrial scaling and application, rather than simply to study battery or hydrogen materials in isolation. Batteries, including solid-state technology
Solid-state batteries are among the technologies ZESS identifies as a focus. The centre’s broader remit includes developing materials and production processes, prototyping and scaling; the opening announcement does not report performance results or establish that a ZESS-developed battery is already commercially available.

Hydrogen technologies, including POWERPASTE
POWERPASTE is among the hydrogen technologies named by ZESS. Fraunhofer presents it as part of the centre’s research portfolio, not as a consumer product available to buy.
What is in the new building?
Fraunhofer’s 5 October 2026 opening announcement reports about 3,300 square metres of total space, including approximately 1,750 square metres of laboratory area and a 450-square-metre dry room. The dry room provides a specialised space for research and work involving materials that require controlled moisture conditions.

Fraunhofer describes the building as a wood-hybrid construction designed to reduce concrete use. It also reports photovoltaic installations on the roof and façade, green roof areas, energy-efficient building services and flexible research space. These are features described by Fraunhofer; the announcement does not provide independently measured emissions savings or building-performance results.

The later figure is the investment reported at the opening; the earlier figure was an estimate for construction and equipment when construction began. Fraunhofer’s 2023 groundbreaking announcement gives the earlier estimate.
When did the project begin?
- 7 February 2019: Fraunhofer ZESS launched as a project centre.
- 7 June 2023: A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction on the new building.
- 5 October 2026: Fraunhofer officially opened the building.
How does ZESS fit into Braunschweig’s battery research network?
ZESS is part of the Braunschweig LabFactories for Batteries and more (BLB+) research network. TU Braunschweig says BLB+ currently has about 150 researchers working in its laboratories and expects the network to exceed 250 once planned buildings and infrastructure are complete in 2027. Those figures describe BLB+ as a whole, not ZESS alone. The university’s BLB+ overview provides the network figures.
