Ultra high frequency (UHF) is the radio-frequency band above 300 MHz and up to 3,000 MHz, inclusive. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) calls its metric subdivision “decimetric waves.” UHF sits between very high frequency (VHF) and super high frequency (SHF).
What frequencies count as UHF?
The ITU’s 2024 Radio Regulations define UHF as band number 9, with a lower boundary of 300 MHz that is exclusive and an upper boundary of 3,000 MHz that is inclusive. In practical terms, UHF means frequencies greater than 300 MHz and no higher than 3,000 MHz. Since 3,000 MHz equals 3 GHz, the band runs above 300 MHz through 3 GHz.

How does UHF compare with VHF and SHF?
UHF is one part of the ITU’s radio-frequency band nomenclature. Its immediate neighbors are VHF below it and SHF above it:

- Full HD Local Channels: Access over-the-air networks in your area, including local news, weather forecasts, sitcoms, kids, sports, and educational programs. Easily enjoy crystal clear digital & HD shows from major networks like ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and more without any monthly subscription fees.
- Optimized Signal Reception: Equipped with advanced reception technology supporting 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 4K | ATSC formats. Vansky HDTV antenna captures stable digital signals within a reliable range, delivering high-definition visuals tailored to your local broadcast environment.
- Flexible Indoor Setup: Features a generous 16.5ft high-quality coaxial cable, allowing you to position the indoor antenna in the best signal spot—such as on a window or wall. Note: Obstacles like thick walls or valleys can affect actual reception; positioning closer to a window is highly recommended.
- Detachable Signal Amplifier: Includes an external signal booster to maximize reception for homes located further from broadcast towers. Pro Tip: If a stable signal cannot be locked with the amplifier on, simply remove the external booster and scan for channels again to find the optimal configuration.
- Safe & Durable Indoor Design: Specifically engineered for safe indoor utilization. Built with premium, flame-retardant materials to ensure long-term stability and durability, shielding your home entertainment setup against indoor environmental fluctuations.
| Band | Frequency range |
|---|---|
| VHF | 30–300 MHz |
| UHF | Above 300 MHz through 3,000 MHz, inclusive |
| SHF | 3–30 GHz |

What is UHF used for?
UHF is a broad band that includes different services and assignments. An ITU spectrum guide lists broadcasting, mobile, and satellite among its common uses. Those examples do not mean every UHF frequency is available for each service: the permitted allocation and use depend on the specific frequency and applicable national rules. Does a UHF radio use the whole band?
No. “UHF” identifies a large frequency band; it does not mean a radio can tune across the entire range. A handheld two-way radio is one example of equipment associated with mobile radio use, but its supported frequencies and whether it may be operated in a particular location depend on the device and local authorization rules. Check the radio’s specified frequency range, compatibility with other equipment, and licensing or authorization requirements before buying or transmitting.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- Long-Range Reception: TV antenna uses four patented loops, Hi-VHF elements and reflectors to receive free TV signals over-the-air from broadcast towers
- Durable Construction: Powerful TV antenna measures 17.4" H x 27.8" W x 6" D with premium durable materials for installation indoors, in an attic, or outdoors in suburban and rural areas
- Compatibility: NEXTGEN TV, 4K, 8K UHD, Full HD 1080p, no Internet required to watch over-the-air TV
- Reception Considerations: Each market has TV towers located in different areas; Distance to the towers and obstructions like trees and your home's building materials will affect reception; an antenna cannot provide cable TV channels
- Enhanced Signal Protection: Reflectors add forward gain and focus antenna's power to protect incoming TV signal from interference that causes pixelation or complete loss of picture; 20-inch mast's pivoting base allows installation on vertical or horizontal surfaces
