Ukraine’s Chaharnyk Drone Fence Targets Fiber-Optic FPVs

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ukraine’s Chaharnyk is an active physical barrier designed to sever the fiber-optic control tether of an approaching FPV drone. Developed by Logika Design Bureau, it combines acoustic detection with a motor-driven mechanism that pulls hooked wires through a cutting zone. It is a specialized counter-drone system—not a conventional razor-wire fence—and public battlefield performance data is not yet available.

How Chaharnyk is intended to stop a drone

Fiber-optic FPV drones receive control signals through a physical cable rather than a conventional radio link. Logika says those links can remain stable in electronic-warfare environments, making radio-based disruption an unsuitable answer to this particular threat. Chaharnyk instead aims to break the tether itself.

Detection and interception

According to Logika and reporting by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), an acoustic sensor listens for the motors and propellers of an approaching drone. When it detects one nearby, electric motors pull hooked wires through a break zone. If the drone’s fiber tether is caught and drawn through the cutter, the physical control connection is severed.

RFE/RL describes the barrier as approximately 80 centimeters high. That reported height and the described moving wires help explain why “razor fence” is shorthand: the system is more than a static length of cutting wire. Severing a control line does not, by itself, establish that every targeted drone will be detected or that a drone whose tether is cut will always crash.

What is known about deployment and performance

Reported deliveries are not proof of effectiveness

On October 1, 2026, RFE/RL reported that a Logika representative said “dozens” of systems had been delivered to frontline Ukrainian units in recent days. The representative also said it was “still too early to discuss official feedback or statistics.” This is an attributed delivery report, not an independently audited total or evidence of battlefield success.

The 95% figure comes from demonstrations

RFE/RL reported that in demonstrations, tethers were snagged on the system’s hooks and pulled through a cutter. Logika claimed a 95% cable-severing success rate in those demonstrations. The figure is the manufacturer’s claim about demonstrations; it is not an independently verified battlefield success rate.

Logika says its testing covers cable capture, mechanical disruption, drive reliability, operation on different terrain, response time, and weather resistance. Its public description lists those test parameters but does not give the results. The sources available as of October 1, 2026, do not establish official field-performance statistics for Chaharnyk.

How it differs from other anti-drone barriers

Not the same as passive road nets

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence reported that the State Special Transport Service installed 534 kilometers of anti-drone nets along roads in seven oblasts during 2025. Those nets are passive road protection; Chaharnyk is an active system that detects a nearby drone acoustically and uses a moving mechanism to target its tether. The reported road-net figure is not a Chaharnyk deployment total.

Not simply an earlier wire barrier

IFRI’s 2026 analysis describes Ukrainian units installing rotating barriers made from barbed or razor wire to damage or sever drone cables, in response to the limits of electronic countermeasures against fiber-optic links. That is context for the wider use of physical defenses, not evidence that those earlier barriers were Chaharnyk or used its detection and moving-wire mechanism.

Operational trade-offs remain open questions

A physical barrier needs to be placed where a drone is likely to encounter it, and its operation depends on detecting the aircraft and catching its tether. Placement also matters for the people and systems being protected. James Patton Rogers, co-director of King’s College London’s Future Threat Lab, told RFE/RL that a barrier could itself be vulnerable to attack and might obstruct Ukrainian maneuver, depending on where it is positioned. These are expert concerns, not confirmed outcomes.

Rogers suggested that a system like this could have a role alongside other counter-drone technology around frontline areas, villages, and key sites. That framing is important: Chaharnyk is a specialized physical layer for a particular control-link threat, not a substitute for every form of air defense.
