Yes—Citrix says attackers have exploited CVE-2026-88772 on unpatched NetScaler deployments, and Google Threat Intelligence Group and Mandiant report that some intrusions involved custom PHP web shells. The vulnerability affects NetScaler ADC and Gateway configurations where DTLS is enabled. Administrators should check their configuration and software track, install the applicable fixed release, and investigate for persistence if they suspect the appliance was accessed before patching.
What CVE-2026-88772 does—and which systems meet its condition
Citrix’s security bulletin, published September 27, 2026, describes CVE-2026-88772 as a memory-overflow vulnerability that can result in remote code execution or denial of service. For this vulnerability, DTLS must be enabled on a customer-managed NetScaler ADC or NetScaler Gateway appliance. Citrix notes that DTLS is enabled by default on VPN virtual servers.
The condition differs by virtual-server type: Citrix says VPN virtual servers are vulnerable unless DTLS is explicitly disabled; other virtual servers meet the stated precondition when configured with type DTLS. Check the configuration rather than assuming an appliance is unaffected because it is not used as a VPN gateway.
This article concerns CVE-2026-88772 only. Citrix disclosed a separate vulnerability, CVE-2026-88771, in the same advisory; do not apply the DTLS condition described here to that separate CVE.

What attackers have been observed doing
Citrix reports observed exploitation of CVE-2026-88772 on unmitigated deployments. Google GTIG and Mandiant also describe active exploitation in the wild, including authentication bypass and root-level initial access. Their late-September 2026 analysis identifies custom PHP web shells, including WHIPSHOT. The reported shell can conceal Base64-encoded command-and-control payloads in native HTTP headers.
These are observed tactics, not a guaranteed sequence on every compromised appliance. Unit 42 also reported possible zero-day exploitation and web-shell delivery, while noting that its post-compromise analysis was ongoing in its September 30, 2026 threat brief.

What administrators should do
- Check the affected appliance and configuration. Identify whether the system is customer-managed NetScaler ADC or Gateway, including a Secure Private Access Hybrid deployment using a NetScaler instance. Inspect each virtual server’s DTLS configuration using the vendor bulletin’s guidance.
- Upgrade to the fixed release for the correct product track. Citrix lists the following fixed targets in its bulletin. Confirm the currently supported target and exact track in the live advisory before scheduling an operational upgrade.

Citrix-managed cloud services and Citrix-managed Adaptive Authentication are updated by Cloud Software Group; the fixed-target list above applies to customer-managed appliances. Citrix’s advisory urges affected customers to install the relevant updated version as soon as possible.
- Investigate if prior access is possible. A software upgrade addresses the vulnerability but does not establish that an appliance previously exposed to exploitation is free of persistence or unauthorized changes. If compromise is suspected, investigate alongside patching and follow your incident-response procedures.
What to check if compromise is suspected
The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security’s September 2026 advisory recommends examining startup scripts, scheduled tasks, web application directories, and crash dump locations. Google’s WHIPSHOT reporting also gives defenders a reason to look for unusual custom PHP code and Base64-encoded command-and-control material concealed in HTTP headers.

These are investigation leads, not a complete forensic checklist. Do not treat the absence of WHIPSHOT or one of these indicators as proof that an appliance was not compromised; the reported tooling does not establish that every attacker used the same web shell.

CISA reported that CVE-2026-88772 and the separate CVE-2026-88771 were added to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog in its September 27, 2026 notice.
