Those are separate benefits: using your own generation can lower imported electricity, while exported electricity is paid through an eligible export arrangement such as the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) in Great Britain. SEG payments are not automatic when panels are commissioned; the application, export meter readings and export MPAN all matter.
Why can bills fall before export payments start?
Panels can supply electricity to your home as soon as they are generating, reducing the amount you need to import from the grid when your household is using that power. Getting paid for electricity sent to the grid is a separate process. Ofgem says SEG payments are calculated using export meter readings, and a generator must apply to a SEG licensee and meet the scheme’s eligibility requirements. Ofgem’s SEG overview explains the scheme.

An export MPAN identifies the export point. Ofgem’s generator guidance identifies an export MPAN and suitable metering among the requirements, and a licensee need not accept a payment request until it has readings it can use to calculate the amount due.

Why the start date matters
In a 2025 answer to Parliament, the government said SEG payments cannot be backdated to commissioning where exports could not be accurately measured until an export MPAN was in place. That means an owner should not assume electricity exported while waiting for the MPAN will later be paid for. The cited sources do not establish a standard processing time for an MPAN or export-payment setup, so a specific wait cannot be promised.

Would you do it again? What the evidence can—and cannot—say
There is no representative statistic in the available evidence showing how many UK solar owners regret installing panels, or how long export-payment setup typically takes. A recent Solar UK discussion includes people talking about waiting for an MPAN, batteries and changes to bills, but it is a self-selected discussion, not a survey. Individual accounts can illustrate what owners encounter; they cannot establish typical savings, remorse or payment delays.
The practical question is whether the system works for your circumstances and whether you understand both sides of its economics: electricity used at home and electricity exported. A lower import bill does not by itself confirm that an export tariff is active or that payments have begun.

How much might you save?
There is no single saving that applies to every roof or household. Energy Saving Trust says the estimate depends on factors including how much generation you use yourself, your export arrangements and your location. Its solar guide gives an illustrative typical domestic system of around 4.5 kWp costing around £7,600, using fuel prices as of July 2026. These are guide figures, not a quote for an individual property.
The same guide gives payback examples of around 9–12 years for five locations, with export payments included and fuel prices as of July 2026:
Rank #3
- Max Battery Voltage: 32V
| Location | Illustrative payback |
|---|---|
| London | 9 years |
| Manchester | 10–11 years |
| Aberystwyth | 9–10 years |
| Stirling | 11–12 years |
| Northern Ireland | Not included in the guide’s July 2026 update |
These are scenario estimates, not guarantees. For a new installation, request a property-specific estimate and compare the whole system rather than relying on a headline export rate. Consider the installed cost and system size, roof location and orientation, expected generation, how much electricity your household can use while it is being generated, storage, tariff terms, certification and metering readiness. A battery can change how much power is used at home or exported, but the available evidence does not establish that adding one always improves payback.
Does SEG apply everywhere in the UK?
The Ofgem guidance cited here describes SEG as a Great Britain scheme; do not assume its rules apply in Northern Ireland. In Great Britain, an eligible generator can apply to a SEG licensee other than their electricity supplier. Each licensee sets its own rate, contract length and other terms; eligible export tariffs must be above zero. Ofgem publishes a supplier list annually. Its list for 1 April 2026–31 March 2027 identifies mandatory and voluntary licensees, but it is not a ranking of the best current rates. Check the provider’s current tariff and eligibility conditions directly before choosing one. Ofgem’s licensee list covers that period.

SEG is not the same as the older Feed-in Tariff (FIT). A home may have a legacy FIT arrangement, so check which contract exists and whether export payments are already being received before changing anything. Energy Saving Trust’s homebuyer advice sets out checks for properties with existing panels.

- Any FIT or SEG contract, its current status and evidence of export payments.
- Warranty and insurance documents.
- A solar-specialist inspection if you need an assessment of the system’s condition.
Confirm contract transfer and payment arrangements with the relevant provider. A buyer should establish what is installed, who owns it and which agreement—if any—covers exported electricity.
What to ask before installing a new system
- Request a property-specific estimate. Ask how the estimate accounts for your roof, location, system size and expected generation.
- Separate self-use from export. Ask what assumptions are made about electricity used in the home and electricity sent to the grid.
- Check the export route. Confirm which export meter readings will be used, how the export MPAN will be arranged and what steps remain before a SEG application can be paid.
- Review the tariff terms. Check the licensee’s current rate, contract length and eligibility conditions; do not treat an annual supplier list as a live rate comparison.
- Verify certification and paperwork. Confirm the relevant certification, warranties and ownership documents for the proposed installation.
- Assess storage on your own numbers. Compare its cost with your household’s likely use of solar generation rather than assuming a battery will pay for itself.
What Ofgem’s wider figures do—and do not—show
Ofgem’s SEG Year 5 Annual Report, published in 2025, reported approximately 86% growth to around £57 million in aggregate payments and 443 GWh of exports for the period covered by that report. Those scheme-wide totals show the scale of payments and exported electricity, not what a typical household earns. The Year 5 report should not be read as a household savings estimate.
