An international friendly is outside the Nations League table. Both can be played during international match dates, but only one carries Nations League competition consequences.
At a glance: competition match or friendly?
| What to compare | UEFA Nations League | International friendly |
|---|---|---|
| Competition status | A UEFA competition for European national teams, with league and group standings. | A non-competition international match; it is not a Nations League standings match. |
| Effect of the result | Group matches award three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. Results can affect standings and progression. | Does not change Nations League group points or directly determine a Nations League promotion or relegation position. |
| Format | Uses edition-specific leagues, groups and progression rules; some stages include knockouts or play-offs. | Does not use the Nations League format. |
| Calendar | Played on the international calendar under the competition rules. | Can also be scheduled on designated national-team dates, subject to applicable rules. |
“International friendly” describes a type of match, not one single tournament. The comparison here is between friendlies and UEFA’s competition for European national teams.

What does a Nations League result change?
In the 2026/27 edition, teams play in groups within four leagues. Group results produce a table, and that table can determine what happens next. UEFA’s regulations award three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. UEFA’s 2026/27 regulations set out the league-phase points and standings rules.
The stakes extend beyond the group phase. The rules provide a League A knockout stage and promotion/relegation play-offs between leagues. In League A, the top two teams in each group advance to two-legged quarter-finals; semi-finals, a third-place match and the final are single-match fixtures. The specific route for a team depends on its league and its position in that edition. UEFA’s knockout and play-off rules describe those stages.

What makes an international friendly different?
A friendly is outside the Nations League competition table. Its result does not add or subtract Nations League group points, nor does it directly decide promotion or relegation in that competition. It may still be a scheduled international match: UEFA’s rules separately provide for friendlies on national-team dates.
A friendly does not necessarily occupy a completely fixed slot. Under the 2026/27 regulations, a friendly may need to be postponed or cancelled to make room to reschedule a Nations League match that was abandoned or cancelled. UEFA’s international-match-calendar rules explain this scheduling relationship.
Rank #2
- A recreational soccer ball with a resilient butyl bladder for casual games
- SOFT AND DURABLE: Machine-stitched construction ensures a soft touch and high durability
- KEEPS ITS SHAPE: Butyl bladder for best air retention
- REQUIRES INFLATION: Ships flat, pump not included
Teams may use friendlies for preparation, experimentation or evaluation, but those purposes vary by team and match. Their status as friendlies means they are not part of the Nations League standings; it does not establish that they lack sporting value.

Why did UEFA create the Nations League?
UEFA’s stated aim was to replace most friendlies with competitive matches and enable national teams to face opponents of similar ranking. The word “most” matters: friendlies were not abolished. UEFA describes the competition as a way to provide more competitive encounters, but that aim is not a guarantee that every fixture will be evenly matched or equally meaningful to every supporter. UEFA’s original announcement sets out that purpose.

How does the 2026/27 format work?
Format details are edition-specific. For 2026/27, UEFA’s regulations describe four leagues and 14 groups: Leagues A, B and C each have four groups of four teams; League D has two groups of three or four teams. In the league phase, each team plays every other team in its group both home and away. UEFA’s 2026/27 league-composition rules give the group structure.
These numbers describe the 2026/27 edition, not a permanent format. UEFA announced on 20 May 2026 a planned men’s competition change for 2028/29: three leagues of 18 teams, each divided into three groups of six, with teams playing six matches against five different opponents. UEFA said the concept would be refined and detailed rules submitted for final approval later; it should be treated as an announced plan, not as the regulations governing 2026/27. UEFA’s announcement of the planned change describes the proposal.
Does the Nations League qualify a team for the EURO or World Cup?
The Nations League is linked to UEFA EURO and FIFA World Cup qualification, but the mechanism depends on the tournament and edition. A Nations League result can matter to a qualification route; it does not mean that winning the Nations League automatically qualifies a team for either tournament. Check the regulations for the named qualifying campaign before drawing a conclusion about a team’s route. UEFA describes the broader link in its Nations League overview.

How to tell which kind of match you are watching
- Look for competition context. A Nations League fixture is identified as part of a league or group in a particular edition; a friendly is not a match in those standings.
- Check the consequence. Nations League points can change a team’s table position and progression prospects. A friendly result does not alter that table.
- Check the edition. Group sizes and later stages can change, so avoid assuming a format from an older season applies to the current or future competition.
- Separate qualification from the match label. A Nations League result may connect to a qualification route under campaign-specific rules, while a friendly is not itself a Nations League standings match.
