It does not restart the computer by itself or act as a Windows-style Task Manager: choose Restart in the dialog to reboot. The shortcut is documented by Ubuntu’s keyboard-shortcut reference.
What Ctrl+Alt+Delete does on Ubuntu
In the standard Ubuntu GNOME session, Ctrl+Alt+Delete displays the Power Off dialog. The dialog lets you select a power action; pressing the shortcut is not itself an immediate restart. Save open work, then choose Restart if that is what you intend.

“Equivalent” can mean several different things: opening a power menu, restarting the whole computer, opening a task manager, or closing one frozen application. Ubuntu’s documented shortcut addresses the first of these, not all of them.

Choose the route that matches what you need
| Need | Documented route | What happens | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open the desktop power menu | Ctrl+Alt+Delete | Opens the Power Off dialog. | Applies to standard Ubuntu GNOME; another flavor or a changed shortcut may behave differently. |
| Restart using the graphical session | Open the Power Off dialog, then choose Restart | Prompts you to select the power action. | Save work before confirming. |
| Request a restart from a terminal | reboot |
Requests a system reboot. | May require appropriate authorization. The Ubuntu Noble manual documents the command and its options in reboot(8). |
| Request a shutdown from a terminal | poweroff |
Requests system power-off. | May require appropriate authorization; see the same Ubuntu Noble reboot(8) manual. |
| Ask GNOME to reboot or power off with confirmation | gnome-session-quit --reboot or gnome-session-quit --power-off |
Requests the selected session action and prompts for confirmation. | These options are documented in the Ubuntu Jammy gnome-session-quit(1) manual; availability can depend on the desktop environment. |
Restart from the desktop or terminal
Use the graphical dialog
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
- In the Power Off dialog, select Restart.
- Confirm if prompted, after saving any work you need.
Use a terminal command
Run reboot to request a restart or poweroff to request shutdown. The Ubuntu Noble manual also documents reboot -f, which forces immediate action without contacting the init system. That is a different, more forceful behavior—not the routine choice for an ordinary restart. Use the normal desktop controls or non-forced command when the system is responsive.

If GNOME is available and you want a confirmation prompt, the Jammy manual documents gnome-session-quit --reboot and gnome-session-quit --power-off. These are session commands, not universal commands for every Ubuntu flavor.
If a single app or the whole desktop is frozen
Ctrl+Alt+Delete opens the power dialog; it is not Ubuntu’s documented universal force-quit shortcut. A stuck application, an unresponsive desktop session, and a machine that ignores keyboard input are different failure states, and no one sequence is established here as a safe fix for all three.

- One app is stuck but the desktop still responds: try that application’s own close or quit controls, or use a force-quit feature documented for your particular desktop and release. Unsaved work may be lost when an application is forced to close.
- The desktop session is stuck: recovery depends on which part of the system still responds. Do not treat an immediate hard power-off as the first routine step.
- The machine does not respond to keyboard input: the ordinary power-dialog shortcut may not be usable. Avoid assuming an application-level shortcut will recover the whole computer.
Check or change the shortcut
Ubuntu’s documented path for reviewing shortcuts is Settings > Keyboard > View and Customize Shortcuts. Select an action to inspect or set its key combination. The binding can differ if you use another Ubuntu flavor, a different release, or a customized configuration. See Ubuntu’s shortcut reference for the documented desktop behavior.
To open GNOME’s run prompt, the shortcut reference lists Alt+F2. Ubuntu’s current desktop guide documents Ctrl+Alt+T for opening the default terminal on Ubuntu 25.04 and later; terminal shortcuts can vary by release and configuration. Details are in Ubuntu’s default-terminal guide.

Ubuntu Server uses the key combination differently
On Ubuntu Server’s physical console, Ctrl+Alt+Delete can reboot the server without a login. Ubuntu’s console security guidance warns that anyone with physical keyboard access could trigger this action.
An administrator can disable that behavior with:
sudo systemctl mask ctrl-alt-del.target
To re-enable it, the same guidance gives:
sudo systemctl unmask ctrl-alt-del.target
The server guide also documents a subset of SysRq functions enabled by default, including immediate reboot with Alt+SysRq+B or power-off with Alt+SysRq+O. These are emergency administration controls, not ordinary desktop restart shortcuts.
