U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, while the 10-year Treasury yield edged down—not up—to 5.28% from 5.31% late Monday. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite set record closing highs, according to the Associated Press.

How the major U.S. indexes finished on October 6

Dow Jones Industrial Average 51,521.28 Up 0.5%
Nasdaq Composite 27,599.79 Up 0.4%; record closing high

The closing figures and records were reported by the Associated Press. The broad advance put all three benchmarks higher for the session, though the percentage gains were modest.

What happened to Treasury yields?

The 10-year Treasury yield fell to 5.28% at the close, from 5.31% late Monday, according to the AP. Reuters also characterized Treasury yields as easing on October 6. That means “yields rise” does not accurately describe the yield direction reported for this session’s close.

Yield comparisons depend on the maturity and observation time. A report might describe an intraday move, a closing yield, or a comparison with the prior session; those are not interchangeable. Here, the cited comparison is specifically the 10-year yield at the October 6 close versus late Monday.

Why market coverage said stocks gained

Reuters and AP described several factors investors were weighing, rather than establishing one definitive cause for the gains. Coverage pointed to optimism about artificial intelligence and corporate earnings, steadier crude prices, and the approaching third-quarter reporting season. Reuters reported that easing yields and steadier oil prices were also relieving some pressure on equities.

Reuters, citing LSEG estimates, said analysts expected aggregate S&P 500 earnings to grow 30.6% for July through September 2026. The same forecasts put energy-sector earnings growth at 114.7% and technology-sector growth at 66.5%. These are estimates for the quarter, not results companies had already reported.

Why a different day may have shown stocks rising with yields

The title’s wording can describe a different market snapshot, but not the October 6 close documented here. Reuters’ October 5 report said Treasury yields climbed while the Nasdaq reached a record and the S&P 500 advanced. That earlier session shows stocks can rise even as yields rise; it does not change the direction of the 10-year yield reported for October 6.

For a precise comparison, check the session date, whether the index figure is intraday or closing, the Treasury maturity, and the time used for the yield comparison. Without matching timestamps, a rising stock index and a rising yield should not automatically be presented as simultaneous moves.
