Which U.S. office in Brazil should you contact?
Choose based on the service you need and the official instructions for that service—not simply because an office is called an embassy or is closest to you. The Department of State’s Brazil listing names the Embassy in Brasília, Consulates General in Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo, an Embassy Branch Office in Belo Horizonte, and consular agencies in Manaus, Fortaleza, and Salvador. See the current Brazil listing for addresses and contact information.

Do not assume that the nearest office handles your case or that proximity establishes which consular district serves you. Start with the relevant Brazil-specific service instructions, then use the contact channel and appointment process published for that service.
Choose a contact route by situation
U.S. citizen emergency
Contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate through its published after-hours channel. The State Department also lists 1-888-407-4747 for callers in the United States and Canada, and +1 202-501-4444 for callers elsewhere. These are consular contact routes; for an immediate medical or law-enforcement emergency, contact local emergency services. See Emergencies Abroad and the Brazil listing for local mission after-hours numbers.
#1 Best Overall
Routine service for a U.S. citizen
Use the Brazil directory to find the relevant mission, then follow the instructions for your particular service. The State Department’s general embassy guidance includes emergency support and passport replacement among the services available to U.S. citizens, but the Brazil-specific service page should determine where your case is handled and whether you need an appointment. USAGov’s embassy guidance provides a general overview.
U.S. visa inquiry for a non-citizen
Begin with U.S. visa information for Brazil and follow the designated post or process for the visa service you need. General embassy guidance covers visa assistance, but it does not establish the assignment of every Brazil-specific case to a particular office.
Rank #2
Diplomatic or government-to-government matter
The U.S. Embassy is in Brasília. For a specific matter, use the embassy’s current official channels; the directory alone does not establish a more detailed internal routing process.
