The useful distinction is how many people need to speak, how organized the event is and what production it requires. The labels overlap across services, so treat these as practical formats, not a universal official classification.
What live streaming means
Live streaming delivers audio or video over the internet as an event happens or close to real time. In everyday use, it often means a host or production sending a program to viewers. That does not automatically make it a two-way conversation: the eSafety Commissioner notes that livestreaming does not have two-way audio and video communication by default. A host may invite guests, but that is a feature of a particular stream, not a requirement of the format. The eSafety Commissioner’s overview of live streaming explains the distinction; Cloudflare also distinguishes broadcast streaming from videoconferencing.

Four practical live-stream formats
One-to-many broadcast
One host, performer or production sends a stream to an audience. Viewers may watch together and use chat or other platform features, but the basic direction is host-to-audience. Gaming, sports, concerts and conferences are common examples; YouTube describes these among uses for encoder streaming. YouTube’s live-streaming guide outlines common ways to go live.
Webinar or structured live event
A webinar is organized around a planned presentation, demonstration, lesson or training session. It commonly has an agenda and a defined way for viewers to participate, such as questions that a moderator reviews before they reach the speakers. Microsoft describes Teams live events as one-to-many events where the audience primarily views shared content and may use moderated Q&A or conversation. Microsoft’s description of Teams live events is one example of this structured approach.

Collaborative stream or co-stream
A co-stream brings multiple hosts or invited guests into one program, as in an interview, panel or discussion. The audience may still mostly watch rather than speak directly with the guests. The eSafety Commissioner notes that a livestreamer may invite guests to add video to a stream. Whether and how this works depends on the service and its features.
Two-way video call or conference
In a video call or conference, participants exchange audio and video so they can respond directly to one another. That differs from a broadcast designed for one host or production to reach viewers. If everyone needs to take turns speaking, a call is usually a more natural fit than a broadcast with chat. The distinction is about the interaction pattern, not simply whether the app uses the word “live.”

How to choose a format
Use four questions to decide what kind of event you need. These are practical decision aids; platform labels and capabilities vary.

- Audience scale: Is this for one person, a small group, or an audience that mainly watches?
- Interaction: Should viewers watch and chat, submit moderated questions, join as invited speakers, or talk directly with one another?
- Structure: Is this a spontaneous hangout, a scheduled event, or an agenda-driven presentation?
- Production: Is a phone or webcam enough, or do you need overlays, external audio, multiple inputs or a console capture workflow?

Streaming method is a separate choice
The format describes how the host and audience interact; the production method describes how the video reaches the service. A broadcast can use a phone, a webcam, an encoder or a supported console. A guest discussion can also use production tools, depending on the platform. The method does not determine whether the event is a broadcast, webinar or conversation.

Mobile
Mobile streaming is a direct option for quick updates or events where a phone is the simplest camera and production setup. Available features and eligibility depend on the platform.
Webcam
A webcam provides a straightforward way to stream from a computer. A separate webcam can help if the built-in camera does not suit the room or framing, but dedicated equipment is not necessary for every stream.

Encoder
An encoder-based workflow is useful when you want gameplay, overlays or additional hardware such as microphones and cameras. YouTube lists gaming, sporting events, concerts and conferences as common encoder-stream uses. A USB microphone can be an optional audio upgrade; it is not what makes the event a particular format.
Console
Supported consoles can stream directly. The exact route depends on the console and service. A capture card may be relevant for some console or multi-input setups, but it is not universally required.

A game broadcast on a store page can combine live gameplay with developer discussion. Steamworks documents broadcasts on game store pages in this way, showing how a stream can mix one-to-many viewing with a more conversational program. Steamworks’ livestreaming documentation describes that use. Similarly, an event feed or webinar may be presented to many viewers while offering a separate, controlled way to ask questions. These examples are why format labels overlap rather than forming mutually exclusive boxes.

For an ordinary live event, choose among the formats and production methods above.
