Types of AI: A Complete Guide to Understanding AI Systems

AI types are best understood across three overlapping dimensions: what a system does, how it works, and how broad its capabilities are.

There is no single, universally accepted list of AI types. AI systems are commonly grouped by what they do, how they work, and how broad their capabilities are—and those categories overlap. A recommendation system, for example, might use machine learning, while an agentic application may combine several models with conventional software.

The most useful starting point is practical: identify the system’s task, method, inputs, degree of autonomy, and the consequences of errors. That distinguishes real-world tools from broader labels such as artificial general intelligence, which remains theoretical.

What does “AI” mean?

The NIST CSRC Glossary, citing NIST SP 800-218A, defines an AI system as “A machine-based system that can, for a given set of human-defined objectives, make predictions, recommendations, or decisions influencing real or virtual environments.” The definition focuses on what a system does, rather than requiring one particular technique. AI is broader than machine learning. Machine learning is one family of approaches within AI; systems can also use rules, logic, search, planning, or combinations of these methods. NIST’s December 2025 initial preliminary draft of IR 8596 deliberately keeps its examples broad because AI systems have different considerations and the field evolves. It is a working reference, not a definitive universal taxonomy. NIST IR 8596

Types of AI by what they do

Task categories are often the most useful way to describe an AI system. They identify its function, not necessarily its underlying architecture, and a single system can fit several categories. NIST IR 8596’s initial preliminary draft includes examples such as the following. NIST IR 8596

Prediction and anomaly detection

Prediction systems estimate an outcome; anomaly-detection systems flag patterns that depart from an expected range. For instance, a predictive-maintenance system might analyze industrial sensor data to estimate when equipment needs attention. That describes a possible application, not a guarantee that a particular system will predict failures accurately.

Recommendations and search

Recommendation systems rank items according to relevance and defined objectives. Search systems retrieve information in response to a query. Both may use statistical models, rules, or other methods; the task label alone does not tell you how they work.

Expert systems

Expert systems apply represented expertise—often expressed as rules—to a defined problem. They are distinct from systems that learn patterns from large datasets, though a deployed application can combine both approaches.

Optimization

Optimization systems select or schedule actions against a defined objective, such as balancing loads across a network. Their output depends on how the objective and constraints are specified.

Generative systems and language models

Generative AI produces content, including text, code, images, video, and audio. Large language models (LLMs) focus on language tasks such as understanding, interaction, generation, and summarization. An LLM is one kind of generative system; generative AI covers more than language alone.

Automated and agentic systems

Automated or agentic systems use software processes to pursue objectives and may take actions with some degree of autonomy. “Agentic” describes a mode of operation, not a specific model architecture or proof of broad intelligence. A system may combine a model with software tools, rules, and human oversight.

Computer vision and robotics

Computer-vision systems process visual information for tasks such as recognition, tracking, inspection, or navigation. Robotics describes systems deployed to sense and act in the physical world. These are capabilities and settings that can draw on multiple AI techniques, rather than exclusive categories of their own. IBM’s overview of AI types

Types of AI by how systems learn or reason

Technical categories describe methods rather than tasks. NIST’s examples include statistical machine-learning techniques such as regression, clustering, decision trees, genetic algorithms, and deep-learning neural networks. It also names symbolic approaches such as logic, human-created heuristic rules, and fuzzy logic; search and planning methods such as A*; reinforcement and apprentice learning; and hybrid, ensemble, and neuro-symbolic techniques. NIST IR 8596

Machine learning and deep learning

Machine-learning systems use data to learn patterns or relationships for a task. Deep learning is a machine-learning approach based on neural networks with multiple layers. These terms describe methods, not what users see the system doing: a deep-learning model might power image recognition, prediction, or content generation.

Symbolic reasoning, rules, search, and planning

Symbolic approaches represent information using structures such as rules or logic and apply them to reach conclusions. Search and planning methods explore possible paths or actions. A system may use these methods alongside learned models rather than relying on only one approach.

Common learning setups

Learning setups describe how a model is trained, not the end-user task it performs:

  • Supervised learning: learns from examples paired with labels or target outcomes.
  • Unsupervised learning: looks for structure in data without supplied labels.
  • Reinforcement learning: learns through interactions and reward signals.

These are broad introductory descriptions; the specific training process varies by system.

Generative AI and foundation models are related, but not interchangeable

Generative AI is a task-oriented category: these systems create content. A foundation model is a model category. The NIST CSRC Glossary defines foundation models in generative AI as models “trained on broad data using self-supervised learning that can be adapted such as through fine-tuning for a variety of downstream tasks.” NIST CSRC Glossary

Some foundation models can be adapted to different downstream tasks, but not every generative model is a foundation model, and not every use of a foundation model is content generation.

Narrow AI, general AI, and superintelligent AI

These labels describe breadth of capability rather than a system’s particular task or training method. They are a popular explanatory framework, not a formal, exhaustive engineering taxonomy.

Narrow AI

Narrow AI refers to systems designed for particular tasks or bounded sets of tasks. IBM’s overview identifies narrow AI as the capability category that exists today. A system can be highly capable within its intended scope without being generally intelligent. IBM’s overview of AI types

Artificial general intelligence

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) refers to a hypothetical ability to perform a broad range of intellectual tasks. It is not the same as a current system handling several related tasks, and it has not been realized, according to IBM’s overview.

Superintelligent AI

Artificial superintelligence describes a hypothetical system that exceeds human capabilities. It is a theoretical category, not a description of a type of AI system currently in use. IBM’s overview of AI types

Reactive, limited-memory, theory-of-mind, and self-aware AI

Another popular framework groups AI by functionality. IBM characterizes reactive machines and limited-memory AI as functional categories, while theory-of-mind and self-aware AI are unrealized or theoretical categories. This framework can oversimplify modern systems and should not be confused with task categories such as search or generation, or methods such as deep learning. IBM’s overview of AI types

  • Reactive machines: a functional label for systems that respond to inputs without a broader account of retained past experience.
  • Limited-memory AI: a functional label for systems that use information from past data or interactions in some way.
  • Theory-of-mind AI: a theoretical category involving understanding mental states such as beliefs or intentions.
  • Self-aware AI: a theoretical category involving self-awareness.

How to compare two AI systems

Labels alone rarely tell you whether a system is suitable for a particular use. Compare the system on these practical dimensions:

Dimension Question to ask
Task and output Does it classify, predict, recommend, generate, retrieve, optimize, or take actions?
Method Does it use statistical machine learning, deep learning, rules or symbolic reasoning, search and planning, or a hybrid?
Inputs and data What information does it use, and what falls outside its scope?
Adaptation Is the model fixed, updated, fine-tuned, or adapted to new tasks?
Autonomy Does the system only suggest outputs, or can it act on them? NIST defines AI systems as operating with varying autonomy. NIST CSRC Glossary
Reliability and impact How accurate and reliable is it, what happens when it errs, and how are safety, security, explainability, and bias addressed? NIST identifies these as trustworthy-AI considerations. NIST AI research

Why there is no single definitive list

Each classification answers a different question: task labels explain what a system does, technical labels describe how it learns or reasons, and capability labels suggest how broad its abilities are. Because the dimensions overlap, they cannot be arranged into one clean ladder of mutually exclusive types.

IBM notes that “our collective understanding of realized AI and theoretical AI continues to shift, meaning AI categories and AI terminology may differ (and overlap) from one source to the next.” NIST similarly keeps its system examples broad so they can remain relevant as the field evolves.
