His account offers a useful beginner’s view of the sequence: create a local folder and GitHub repository, register an SSH public key, stage and commit changes, and push the commit. It is one learner’s reflection—not a verified course review or a complete setup guide.
What Maina says he learned
In a DEV Community post, Stanley Maina recounts spending two weeks learning the basics of Git and GitHub and how they are used in data science. He describes the practical challenge as moving a project from a local folder to GitHub with Git and SSH.

His account is personal: he says he created a folder on his computer, created a GitHub repository, added an SSH public key in GitHub settings, and then worked through a short sequence of Git commands. He also writes that SSH setup took hours to navigate, but that help from his teachers got him past the hurdle. That describes his experience, not a general estimate of how long SSH setup takes.
How the local-folder-to-GitHub sequence works
Maina reports using git status, git add ., git commit -m "Initial commit", and git push origin main. These commands describe a common shape of a first upload, but the post is not a complete, independently verified setup procedure. In particular, the right branch name and the steps for creating or connecting a repository can differ by project and account setup.
#1 Best Overall
-
git statusshows the state of the local working tree, including changes Git has noticed and whether they are staged. -
git add .stages changes under the current directory. Staging selects what will go into the next commit; it does not upload those files to GitHub.Rank #2
-
git commit -m "Initial commit"records the staged changes in the local repository as a commit with a message.Recommended Free Tools

git push origin mainsends committed history from the local repository to the remote namedorigin, on a branch namedmain, assuming that remote and branch are configured and the account is authorized.
So “Git moves files to GitHub” is a handy beginner’s shorthand, but not quite what happens: Git stages and records changes locally, and a push synchronizes committed history with a remote repository. The commands in Maina’s post capture that distinction better than the shorthand does.
What SSH adds to the workflow
SSH is the authentication route Maina describes for connecting his computer to GitHub. GitHub Docs explains: “You can connect to GitHub using the Secure Shell Protocol (SSH), which provides a secure channel over an unsecured network.” In the usual key-based flow, a public key is added to the GitHub account, while the corresponding private key remains on the computer.
GitHub’s official SSH guide organizes setup around checking for an existing key, generating a key if needed and adding it to ssh-agent, adding the public key to the account, and testing the connection. Its maintained, operating-system-specific instructions are the right reference for the current steps; a brief class account should not be treated as a substitute. Maina mentions Windows PowerShell, but his post does not establish every detail of his operating system or configuration.
SSH or HTTPS for a first push?
SSH is not the only way to authenticate to GitHub. The practical choice depends on what is already configured on the computer and whether the learner prefers key-based access. Maina’s account specifically follows SSH; it does not compare setup effort with HTTPS or document current HTTPS instructions.
Best Value
-
Follow the SSH route if you want to use an SSH key and are prepared to set up and test it for your device.
-
Consider HTTPS if that better fits your existing setup or learning materials; consult GitHub’s current documentation for its steps rather than assuming SSH commands cover both methods.
How the class account fits LuxDevHQ’s broader curriculum
LuxDevHQ’s public Data Science and Analytics guide describes a much wider, project-based pathway that includes spreadsheets, business intelligence, SQL, Python, statistics, machine learning, deep learning, NLP and retrieval-augmented generation, deployment, and capstone work. Its curriculum materials also list introductory Git and GitHub in a software-engineering track and describe instructor-led, project-driven programs.
Those public descriptions provide context, but they do not establish the syllabus or outcomes of the particular two-week class Maina writes about. The defensible takeaway is narrower: he reports learning foundational Git and GitHub concepts and completing an SSH-based push as part of his own learning experience.
