It can be made with two lamps, but it can also pair one lamp with a reflector, sunlight, or ambient light. Adjust the fill to choose between pronounced, dramatic shadows and softer, lower-contrast light.
What two-point lighting does
The key is the principal, directional light. Its position and quality establish the main shape of the subject. The fill illuminates the shadow side, reducing the darkness of the shadows without necessarily removing them. The technique is useful for portraits and video interviews because it gives you control over both facial modeling and shadow detail.

“Two-point” describes two lighting roles, not necessarily two powered fixtures. A reflector can bounce existing light into the shadows; daylight or room illumination can also act as fill. A rim or backlight that separates a subject from the background is a separate role, not an automatic part of a two-point setup. How to arrange the key and fill
Start with the key
Place the key to one side of the subject so it creates shape and leaves shadows on the far side of the face. For an interview, a common starting arrangement is a key about 45 degrees from the camera and a frontal fill; the angle is an example, not a fixed rule. Add fill to the shadow side
Place fill where it can lift the key’s shadows. Fill near the camera axis tends to make its own shadows less visible to the camera. Moving it off-axis gives more directional control, but a hard source can produce a noticeable second shadow. A larger or softer source can make that effect less conspicuous. Consider angle and softness as well as brightness.
Set the contrast by adjusting fill
Increase fill when you want more shadow detail and gentler contrast. Reduce it when you want deeper shadows and a more dramatic, low-key look. If fill approaches the key’s strength, it can flatten facial modeling. Watch the subject on camera as you adjust: the useful amount depends on the intended look, the scene, and how much detail you need to retain.

Choose a fill source that suits the shoot
| Fill approach | Useful when | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Second light or flash | You need independently controlled output rather than relying on available light. | It adds equipment and setup; flash must be compatible with the camera. |
| Reflector or bounced light | You want to redirect an existing source without adding another powered lamp. | Effectiveness depends on reflective material and distance; positioning it closer can make the fill more effective. |
| On-axis fill | You want to minimize visible fill-created shadows. | Placement may be constrained, and direct reflections can be an issue. |
| Off-axis fill | You want directional control or targeted shadow lift. | A hard source may create double shadows; a softer or larger source helps. |
Portraits in a studio
Use a directional key to create facial shape, then bring fill toward the shadow side until the shadows reveal the detail you want. Matching the key’s diffusion and color temperature is a common way to keep the light coherent, though it is not mandatory; the desired contrast and color treatment should guide the choice.

The same arrangement works for a filmed face: the key provides direction, while fill controls shadow density. Two sources can handle those jobs. Add a backlight only if you also want edge separation; it serves a different purpose.

Outdoor portraits and mixed light
Sunlight can be the key, with camera flash filling the shadows. Alternatively, a flash or another lamp can be the key while ambient light supplies some fill. A reflector can bounce sunlight or another existing source toward the shadow side, avoiding an extra powered fixture.

Ratio notation is not used consistently. Some explanations compare the relative strength of the key and fill sources; others compare total illumination on the highlight side with illumination on the shadow side. State the convention before interpreting a number, and do not compare ratios from different conventions as though they were equivalent.

Under Cambridge in Colour’s convention, one part fill for every two parts main light is offered as a useful portrait starting point, not a universal prescription. FUJIFILM UK gives examples in which equal key and fill intensity can remove facial shadows and look flat, while its 2:1 example has little shadow and its 8:1 example is more dramatic. These are instructional examples under that guide’s convention.

Its examples include 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, and 8:1. Treat these figures as examples within the stated convention, not as a universal scale. In practice, the reliable principle is that more fill softens contrast and less fill preserves stronger shadows.
