No source-backed test establishes which SOCKS5 proxy is the fastest or most secure. The useful way to choose is to verify the features your application needs, understand what the proxy does—and does not—protect, and test the actual route you plan to use. SOCKS5 routes application connections through a proxy endpoint; the protocol itself does not encrypt that connection.
What SOCKS5 does—and what it does not
A SOCKS5 proxy relays supported application traffic through a proxy server. The application must be configured to use it, so it does not automatically route every connection from your device. SOCKS5 alone is not an encrypted tunnel. Proton VPN says, “SOCKS5 does not encrypt your data, so anyone who can intercept your traffic (for example, using a man-in-the-middle attack) can access it.” That is Proton’s explanation in its support article, not a comparative security assessment of proxy providers. Proton VPN: Why Proton VPN does not offer a SOCKS5 proxy.

HTTPS remains important: when you connect to a site over HTTPS, that connection has its own encryption. But HTTPS does not encrypt the separate hop between your application and a SOCKS5 server, nor does SOCKS5 turn other application traffic into encrypted traffic. If you need device-wide encrypted routing, a VPN tunnel is a different tool; check how the specific service handles traffic and DNS.

- Protocol and application support: Confirm your application supports SOCKS5 and can use the provider’s endpoint and authentication method.
- TCP and UDP: Check support for the transport your application needs. SOCKS5 does not mean every provider endpoint supports UDP: NordVPN documents TCP and UDP support for its SOCKS5 service, while RFC 8828 notes that most SOCKS proxies do not support UDP. NordVPN SOCKS5 documentation · RFC 8828.
- DNS handling: Determine whether your client resolves names locally or sends hostnames to the proxy. The setting can change what DNS queries your network sees.
- Endpoint type and location: A datacenter, residential, mobile, or VPN-provider proxy may suit different requirements. Provider descriptions do not independently establish speed, anonymity, or quality.
- Authentication and session controls: Check how credentials are issued and whether an IP stays fixed for a session or rotates.
- Privacy statements: Read the provider’s current logging and privacy documentation; the SOCKS5 protocol itself does not guarantee a particular logging policy.
Does SOCKS5 encrypt traffic?
No—not by itself. A SOCKS5 connection is not equivalent to an encrypted VPN tunnel. If a destination connection uses HTTPS, its application-to-website traffic is encrypted by HTTPS, but that protection should not be confused with encryption of the proxy hop or other traffic. Proton VPN’s article explains this distinction from the provider’s perspective. Proton VPN’s SOCKS5 security explanation.

Does SOCKS5 support UDP?
The protocol can support UDP, but a particular proxy endpoint or client may not. Check the service documentation and test the intended application rather than relying on the label “SOCKS5.” NordVPN states that its SOCKS5 proxies support TCP and UDP; RFC 8828 cautions that most SOCKS proxies do not support UDP. Those statements describe different scopes, not a guarantee that every provider does—or does not—support it. NordVPN support · RFC 8828.
Can a SOCKS5 proxy hide DNS requests?
Not automatically. DNS behavior depends on the client and its configuration. For example, curl documents that --socks5 resolves hostnames locally. If you need the proxy to receive the hostname for resolution, use and verify the client’s remote-DNS behavior rather than assuming the proxy hides local lookups. Check the documentation for the exact client and option you use. curl manual: --socks5.
How proxy types and sessions affect the choice
Proxy category and session behavior matter when an application needs a particular kind of endpoint or a stable IP. The Socks5 service’s help center lists residential, datacenter, mobile, and static residential categories. Its residential guide describes country and city targeting, automatically changing IPs, and session IDs intended to keep requests on an IP. These are vendor-described functions, not independent proof of performance or anonymity. Socks5 help center · Socks5 residential proxy guide.

What provider documentation establishes
The available documentation supports a shortlist of services and capabilities to investigate, not a ranked top eleven. None of the reviewed material provides a controlled, comparable speed or security test across eleven providers.

| Service | What its documentation establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | Provider documentation describes SOCKS5, TCP and UDP support, authentication, and setup guidance. Official support article. | No comparable speed ranking or independent security result. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | Support materials describe a SOCKS5 option and separately generated proxy credentials. A support PDF lists a Netherlands endpoint hostname and port 1080; endpoint instructions can age, so verify current setup details with PIA. PIA support materials. | No comparable speed ranking or independent security result. |
| Socks5 | Its help center lists several proxy categories; its residential guide describes location targeting, changing IPs, and session IDs. Help center · Residential guide. | Vendor feature descriptions do not establish independent speed, anonymity, or quality. |
| Windscribe | Windscribe says its standalone SOCKS5 proxy was discontinued. Its separate Proxy Gateway lets a desktop host an HTTP or SOCKS5 endpoint on the local network for other devices, routing through Windscribe’s network. Windscribe: What happened to SOCKS5 proxy? · Windscribe: Proxy Gateway. | Proxy Gateway is not the same offer as a hosted SOCKS5 proxy subscription. |
| TorGuard | Its support site lists SOCKS5 setup guides. TorGuard support. | The material reviewed does not establish current comparative performance, endpoint breadth, or value. |
| Proton VPN | Its support article explains why the provider does not offer a SOCKS5 proxy and discusses the encryption distinction. Proton VPN support. | This is not evidence that Proton offers a SOCKS5 endpoint or that one service is comparatively more secure. |
The list is intentionally shorter than eleven: adding providers without current official documentation would imply verification that is not established. None of these entries is ranked by speed or security.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge speed claims
Speed is a property of the route and conditions as much as the provider: endpoint location, distance and routing to the destination, congestion, client, and connection type can all affect results. No independent, comparable speed figures are established here, so “fastest” should not be treated as a proven provider ranking.
For a meaningful comparison, test the same client configuration, protocol, destination, and baseline connection for each service. Record the date, client and server geography, endpoint type, number of repetitions, latency, throughput, and how failed or unstable runs were handled. A result applies only to those conditions; it is not a guarantee for another location or time.
Quick Recap
Practical decision rule
- Write down the application, transport (TCP or UDP), and whether it needs a stable or changing IP.
- Confirm that the provider supports that transport and endpoint type for the application you will use.
- Configure authentication and verify whether DNS is resolved locally or remotely in the client.
- Review current provider documentation for endpoint availability, session controls, and privacy terms.
- Test the actual route for latency, throughput, reliability, and DNS behavior before relying on it.
