Two-Player Games You Can Play With a Friend Online

Find a browser game for two and invite a friend: compare chess challenges, Codenames rooms, PlayingCards.io room codes, and Board Game Arena’s catalog.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a quick head-to-head match, use Chess.com’s friend challenge; for a word game, create a room in Codenames Online; for cards or tabletop-style play, share a PlayingCards.io room code. The key difference is how the invite works: some games use a link, while others use a room code, and Chess.com’s Daily games can wait for your friend to accept.

Choose a game by how you want to play

Game Invite method What to expect
Chess.com Challenge a friend from the Play a Friend screen or their profile, use a username shortcut URL, or choose the live-play Challenge Link option. Choose Live for a match that starts when your friend is online, or Daily if they may accept later. Chess settings can include game type, time control, and rated status.
Codenames Online Create a virtual room and share its URL. A browser version of Codenames and Codenames Duet, suited to word-association play. The cited page does not establish exact player-count rules.
PlayingCards.io Choose a game, create a room, and share its room code. Moves synchronize between players, and a private hand area keeps each player’s cards hidden from the other. The quick-start guide does not establish which games are strictly for two players.
Board Game Arena Browse the catalog, then check the selected game’s page for its invitation method. A broad browser-playable catalog of board and card games; the catalog alone does not establish that every title supports exactly two players or a direct room link.

Challenge a friend to chess

Chess.com documents several ways to invite someone: open Play a Friend, visit the friend’s profile, or use the username shortcut at chess.com/play/username, replacing “username” with the friend’s username. The live-play page also offers a Challenge Link option. The precise controls can vary by interface, so check the available choices in the version you are using. Chess.com’s friend-challenge instructions and its live play page describe these routes.

Live or Daily?

  • Live: Your opponent needs to be online to accept. Chess.com says an unaccepted Live challenge expires after a few minutes.
  • Daily: Your friend can accept later, so this is the better fit when you are not both available at once.

Set up the match

When starting a game, Chess.com documents options for choosing an opponent, game type, time control, and whether the game is rated. Which controls appear can depend on the interface. See Chess.com’s guide to starting a game for its documented setup options.

Start a Codenames room

Go to Codenames Online, create a virtual room, then send its URL to your friend or group. The site describes a free browser implementation of both classic Codenames and Codenames Duet. Choose the version that suits your group; the cited page does not specify exact player-count requirements, so check the game’s own instructions if you need a particular group size.

Share a PlayingCards.io room code

  1. Choose a game on PlayingCards.io.
  2. Create a room.
  3. Share the room code with your friend.

The quick-start guide says actions are synchronized between players and that each player’s private hand area conceals their cards from the other players. It calls the invitation identifier a room code, not a URL. Check the selected game’s own rules and player count before settling on it for a two-person match.

Browse Board Game Arena carefully

Board Game Arena offers a large catalog of board and card games adapted for browser play. It is a place to browse if you already have a kind of game in mind, but the catalog page does not verify that every title is for exactly two players or offers a direct share link.
