Decide how the planets relate
Before drawing or generating anything, choose the visual relationship: two planets side by side, one partly overlapping the other, bodies in an apparent orbit, or a large world paired with a smaller one. Decide whether they should look like realistic planets or a stylized, imaginative pair. These choices give you a clear brief for a generator or a sketch.
Leave room for the interface
Keep the pair recognizable at small screen size and leave quieter areas where app icons, a clock, or text might appear. On a phone, check where the lock-screen clock and notifications sit; on a desktop, consider how much of the image your icons occupy. Use celestial imagery as inspiration
For an imaginative scene, NASA’s article on worlds with double suns describes concepts including double sunsets, lava seas, and nearby planets that could appear like giant moons. Its illustrations are conceptual art and inspiration, not a step-by-step wallpaper tutorial.
Set the canvas for your device first
Choose whether you are making a desktop or phone image before you settle the composition. A wide desktop crop and a tall phone crop show very different portions of the scene, so simply stretching one version can distort the planets or push them out of view. Make separate crops and reposition the pair for each screen.

NASA’s wallpaper collection provides separate desktop and smartphone files. One example is 1920×1080 pixels for desktop and 1080×1920 pixels for mobile; these are example asset dimensions, not universal screen standards. Create the artwork
Digital-first workflow
- Write a specific brief. Describe the two planets’ relative size, position, color, surface, lighting, and background. For example: “A large ringed planet beside a small blue moon, warm rim light, sparse stars, planets in the upper half, dark open space below.” Use your own details and adjust the placement for the screen you are making.
- Generate or assemble a first draft. Use a prompt-based wallpaper generator or arrange suitable art and design elements in an editor. Canva describes text prompting, editing, and aspect-ratio options on its wallpaper page.
- Refine what matters. Adjust the planets’ size and spacing, make their edges and surfaces distinct, and check that the background does not compete with them. If you want a more realistic result, use light and shadow to make each body read as round; for a graphic look, emphasize clear shapes and intentional color contrast.
Hand-drawn workflow
- Sketch the silhouettes. Draw two circles or varied planetary forms and test their spacing on paper before adding detail.
- Build color and texture. Use pastels or another drawing medium to develop the surfaces, shadows, and surrounding space. NASA/JPL’s activity focuses on visual elements such as shape, line, color, texture, and value as ways to observe and interpret planetary imagery.
- Digitize the drawing. Scan it or photograph it in even light, keeping the camera square to the page to reduce perspective distortion. Bring the image into an editor so you can crop it, adjust its color, and prepare screen-specific versions.
Soft pastels or other drawing media are optional materials for the hand-drawn route; they are not required for a digital wallpaper.

Make phone and desktop versions
- Duplicate the original artwork. Keep an editable master, then create a separate canvas for each screen shape you need.
- Reposition, don’t stretch. Enlarge or move the planets within each crop so the pair stays visible and balanced. If the artwork does not fill a tall or wide canvas, extend or redesign the background rather than distorting the planets.
- Check the actual interface. Preview the phone version with its clock and icons, and the desktop version with its usual icon layout. Move important features away from areas that are obscured.
- Export and inspect. Save each crop as an image file supported by your device, then set it as wallpaper and check for softness, awkward cropping, or clashing text. Return to the editable master to make changes.
Use NASA imagery carefully
NASA says its content, including media used as 3D-model texture maps, is generally not subject to U.S. copyright and describes educational and informational uses. But NASA pages may display third-party copyrighted material, and NASA’s use of that material does not grant other people permission to reuse it. Check the individual asset’s credit line, follow any stated attribution requirements, and consult NASA’s image and media guidance before using an image.
For commercial work, NASA says imagery may generally be used editorially in published material that is not promotional, provided the use does not imply NASA endorsement. Product or merchandise use has separate guidance; do not use NASA logos or describe an artwork or product as NASA-approved. See NASA’s commercial-use guidance and check the specific asset’s notices.
