There is no single desk depth required for two monitors. Choose a surface that lets you keep the screens at a comfortable viewing distance while leaving room for the stands or mount, keyboard, mouse, and forearms. Measure from your eyes to the screen—not from the desk edge—and judge the whole seated setup.
Desk depth and viewing distance are different measurements
Desk depth is the front-to-back size of the work surface. Viewing distance is the space between your eyes and the front of a screen. The desk helps make that distance possible, but the usable setup also depends on where you sit, how much room the monitor bases take, and whether your keyboard, mouse, and forearms fit comfortably.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) says the preferred viewing distance is 20–40 inches (50–100 cm) from the eyes to the screen; its quick-tip guidance sets 20 inches as a minimum. OSHA also advises sitting upright with back support and being able to read the screen comfortably. The University of Bergen Occupational Health Services gives a 50–80 cm monitor-distance range depending on vision and screen size. Desk-depth recommendations differ too: WorkSafe Queensland recommends 800 mm, while the University of Bergen recommends 80–90 cm to provide viewing distance, keyboard room, and forearm support. Treat these as useful reference points from separate sources, rather than a proven minimum that suits every screen, stand, and user. Arrange the monitors around how you use them
If you use both screens about equally
Place the monitors side by side, with their meeting point—the seam—centered in front of you. Center your keyboard on that same midline. The University of Bergen and UC Davis both describe this arrangement for a pair used equally. A slight inward angle can help bring the screens together; Humanscale advises that equally used displays can form a V with their meeting point at the user’s midline. If one screen is your primary display
Put the primary monitor and keyboard directly in front of you, and place the secondary monitor to the side. This avoids centering your seated position on the seam when most of your work happens on one screen. UC Davis and Humanscale recommend aligning the main display with the user in this situation. For either arrangement, OSHA advises keeping screens directly in front of you and no farther than 35 degrees to your left or right. Position the top of a screen at or slightly below eye level; eyewear can affect the height that feels right. OSHA monitor guidance.

What to change if the desk feels too shallow
First identify what is taking up the depth. A large stand may consume space behind the keyboard; a keyboard placed too far back can leave little room for your forearms; or the screens may be too close for comfortable reading. Match the fix to the constraint:

- Need more room behind the screens: Pull the desk away from the wall if the room allows. OSHA lists this as a way to increase monitor clearance.
- Monitor bases occupy too much surface: A compatible monitor arm or other support can reclaim stand footprint and let you adjust screen position. It does not guarantee the right viewing distance or fit every desk. Check the monitor’s size, weight, and VESA pattern, as well as desk thickness, edge shape, and clamp or grommet compatibility before choosing a mount. OSHA discusses monitor supports, and Humanscale advises treating screen depth as an adjustable, person-dependent position that can begin around arm’s length. - Keyboard position pushes you too close: An adjustable keyboard tray can move the keyboard toward you and help create more effective room for the screens. OSHA lists this as a possible adjustment.
- The work surface cannot fit the whole setup: Consider a deeper desk. The 800 mm and 80–90 cm recommendations above are practical reference points, but confirm the fit with your own equipment and seated position.
- The screens themselves drive the problem: OSHA also suggests considering a less-deep flat-panel display or positioning a monitor in a corner, where appropriate.
These are adjustments to positioning and available space, not guarantees of a particular viewing distance. Recheck the setup from your normal seated posture after making a change.

- Sit in your usual working position with your back supported.
- Arrange the two screens for your actual use: center the seam and keyboard if both are used equally, or center the primary screen and keyboard if one is used most.
- Measure from your eyes to the front of each screen. Check whether text is comfortably readable and whether the distance fits the guidance you are using.
- Make sure the desk still accommodates the keyboard, mouse, and forearms without forcing you to lean forward.
- Check that monitor bases or mounts have enough clearance, including behind the desk if a clamp or cables need space.
- If anything crowds the work area, adjust the desk position, screen support, or keyboard position before deciding whether you need a deeper surface.
Individual vision, screen dimensions, base design, seating position, and work habits can change what fits. The cited guidance is ergonomic advice, not controlled testing that establishes one exact desk depth for every two-monitor setup.
