Managed charging can shift when an EV draws power; bidirectional charging can also send power back out. With compatible equipment and the right permissions, an EV could help supply a home, a building or the grid.
What “everything-to-grid” means
Vehicle-grid integration, or VGI, connects EV charging with household energy use and electricity-system needs. The phrase “everything-to-grid” is a broad vision: vehicles and other connected equipment could coordinate when they use or supply power. It does not mean that every EV can export electricity, or that any home can connect a car to the grid without approval.

Three terms describe where power goes:
- V2H (vehicle-to-home): power flows from an EV to loads in a home, often for backup or to use stored energy on site.
- V2B (vehicle-to-building): power flows from an EV to a building’s electrical system or loads.
- V2G (vehicle-to-grid): power flows from an EV to the electric grid as part of an authorized connection or grid service.
Managed charging is different: it adjusts when or how quickly a vehicle charges, but does not send power back from the vehicle.

| Approach | Power flow | Potential use | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed charging | Grid to EV, with charging time or rate adjusted | Shift demand away from peak periods or coordinate charging with grid conditions | No electricity is exported from the vehicle. |
| V2H or V2B | EV to home or building loads | Back up selected loads or use vehicle energy locally | Power serves a local system; it is not automatically sent to the grid. |
| V2G | EV to the electric grid | Provide an authorized grid service | Requires compatible equipment and an approved grid connection or program. |
Can an electric car power a house?
It can in a V2H setup, but only when the vehicle, bidirectional charging equipment and home electrical system are designed to work together. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says an EV needs to be paired with similarly capable electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) to discharge power to an external load. A regular charger should not be assumed to have that capability.

Depending on the installation, a system may supply selected circuits or other configured home loads. The vehicle’s battery capacity alone does not establish how much of a house it can power or for how long. A National Laboratory of the Rockies overview says a fully charged EV could support an average home for several days, but that is a general estimate—not a runtime promise for a particular home.
What affects backup runtime
- How much charge is available when an outage begins, and how much energy the system allows the home to use.
- Which loads are connected and how much electricity they draw, including whether large appliances run.
- The vehicle’s usable battery energy, the bidirectional equipment and the home’s electrical configuration.
These variables mean that backup planning should be based on the particular vehicle and installed system, not on a headline battery-capacity figure.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Can you sell electricity from an EV back to the grid?
Possibly, but a vehicle capable of V2G is not by itself permission to export power. Grid export needs compatible bidirectional equipment, an appropriate interconnection and whatever utility approval or program enrollment applies locally. The DOE advises EV owners to check their serving utility’s interconnection rules. It also says incentives for vehicle V2G services are not widely in place, so payments or bill savings should not be assumed.
V2H and V2B are not the same as selling electricity: they direct energy to local loads. A V2G arrangement is the one intended to export to the grid, and its availability and terms depend on the local utility and program.

What equipment and compatibility checks are needed?
Bidirectional charging is a vehicle-plus-equipment capability, not simply a matter of matching a plug. Before planning a system, confirm that the specific vehicle and EVSE are supported together and that the equipment can perform the intended function—V2H, V2B or V2G—in your location.
- Vehicle: Confirm that the exact model and configuration support discharging power for the use you want.
- EVSE and controls: Confirm the bidirectional equipment, inverter and controls required for that vehicle and destination.
- Home or building electrical system: Check the electrical configuration and which loads the system can serve.
- Grid connection: For export, verify utility interconnection requirements and any applicable program rules before assuming the system can feed power to the grid.
- Installation and regional support: Confirm the system can be installed and supported where you live; availability and requirements are not uniform.
DOE’s January 2025 assessment describes a still-developing market. It reports limited U.S. availability of residential DC bidirectional chargers, which cost more than AC Level 2 chargers, and identifies evolving standards, interconnection gaps and coordination needs. The report discusses both AC and DC approaches; it does not establish one settled architecture for every use.

Why utilities care about managed charging
Even without exporting energy, an EV can be more grid-friendly if its charging is shifted or modulated. Coordinating charging can help reduce demand peaks and pressure on power infrastructure. A Joint Office of Energy and Transportation page summarizes a study finding that managed charging could reduce 30% of utility investments. That is a study finding reported by the Joint Office, not a prediction of household savings or a result specific to V2G.
The same Joint Office page says utilities can face an 18-month turnaround, or sometimes longer, for high-powered charger grid connections. That figure concerns those grid connections, not the installation time for a residential bidirectional charger. It illustrates why utility coordination matters as EV charging expands.
What still limits widespread use
- Pairing and system design: A compatible vehicle, bidirectional EVSE and electrical setup must work together; connector fit alone does not demonstrate export capability.
- Availability and cost: DOE’s January 2025 assessment describes residential DC bidirectional options as limited and more expensive than AC Level 2 charging equipment.
- Interconnection and rules: Requirements for grid export are utility- and location-dependent.
- Programs and compensation: V2G participation, geographic coverage and payment depend on local arrangements; widely available incentives are not established.
- Coordination and standards: DOE identifies evolving standards and coordination needs as deployment challenges.
The Joint Office also describes an $11.2 million initiative involving up to 25 utilities for queue-management work. Those figures describe a utility initiative, not a consumer rebate for bidirectional equipment.
What to do if you are considering an EV-to-home or V2G setup
- Choose the use case: Decide whether you want managed charging, home or building backup, or grid export. They require different capabilities and permissions.
- Check the exact vehicle pairing: Ask the vehicle manufacturer or qualified installer to confirm that the model and configuration support the intended power flow with the proposed EVSE.
- Ask what the system will actually supply: Confirm which home or building loads can be served and how the equipment is configured for backup.
- Contact the serving utility before planning export: Request its interconnection rules and ask whether a relevant V2G program is available in your area.
- Evaluate the full installation: Have the vehicle, EVSE, controls and electrical configuration assessed together; do not treat a generic adapter or ordinary Level 2 charger as a bidirectional system.
For now, the practical picture is uneven: managed charging can support grid flexibility without exporting energy, while bidirectional use depends on a particular vehicle-and-equipment pairing, installation and, for V2G, local utility approval. “Everything-to-grid” is a useful way to describe the direction of travel, not a universal capability or guaranteed revenue stream.
